Waching daily Apr 3 2017

Bad news from the USA - Yevgeny Yevtushenko died at the age of 84.

He was a poet with a bright, long, creative life.

The last symbol of the Khrushchev Thaw in Russian literature.

Yevtushenko wanted to be buried near Moscow, in Peredelkino.

After giving his condolences to the family,

Russian President Putin called Yevgeny Yevtushenko a great poet.

His legacy is a part of the Russian culture.

Aleksander Khristenko reports from the USA.

But first, Anastasia Sakhovskaya will report on how the poet is remembered in Russia.

I'm different, I'm tired and I'm idle. I'm feasible and not worthwhile.

I'm incompatible and inconvenient,

I'm shy and cocky, I'm angry and I'm kind.

He really wanted everything to be connected and everything was mixed up inside of him.

One of the last interviews, recorded in the USA.

As always, Yevtushenko has no limits, is full of surprises, timeless and fulfilled.

But then he stops mid-word and decides to read these important words on camera.

Here is to the movement and the heat! And to the greed, the triumphant greed.

Hungry for experiences, emotions, colors, as Yevtushenko said himself.

Having grown up among Grey prison jackets, he had always craved for bright colors.

Hence the constant need to wear the crazy jackets, the screaming colours, making him young.

The words that became his life manifesto were written at 23.

Igor Volgin, one of Yevtushenko's closest friends

remembers meeting him for the first time at authors' night.

In the literature museum he was so memorable, that everybody heard him.

When he was reading his poems, the crowd in the next room demanded that we open the windows.

His voice flew over the Yakimanka District.

Subconsciously, we knew that was the voice of time, the voice of an era.

Because all the public mania,

all our expectations, they all boiled there.

I was struck by the new rhymes, by what he brought to art.

He was the new hero - sincere, alive, direct.

The flesh and blood of the new generation. A favorite of the Polytechnical Institute audience.

This footage from Lenin's Guard, shot by Marlen Khutsiev, is a chronicle of an era.

Voznesensky, Akhmadulina, Okudzhava, Yevtushenko...

Moscow Tovarnaya loves the students.

It rescues them, it gives them jobs.

We were friends.

Those were the times, when, you know...

everybody wanted to be together

everybody promoted

new tendencies.

He was one of the main instigators

of that time.

Women loved him.

He deserved it.

He was always devoted to the audience of the Polytechnical Institute.

He lived in the USA, he performed in 97 countries, but he always came back here.

Even when he was very sick, when he didn't know if he'd make it on stage,

he found the strength to perform.

He was probably the most liberated person of that time.

I knew him and I understood that the most important thing to him was that patriotism,

when you want your country to be better.

All of his poems - about love,

society, politics,

humor, they were all connected to Russia in some way.

Not just because of the language, but the mentality.

He was born at the Winter Station, he understands all this.

The museum of art and photography in their cottage in Peredelkino

is his creation with his wife Maria, whom he was married to for a quarter of a century.

He came here as soon as he came to Russia.

I love to sit here.

I love to live in this world of mine.

Jean Cocteau, Chagall - with a personal autograph.

Picasso, Pirosmani, Max Ernst - the only picture in Russia.

Yevtushenko spent years to gather this unique collection

and to make the museum his people's heritage.

He took a lot of pictures himself.

This is a Siberian woman from the Winter Station.

Her face is halfway in the shade.

Somehow,

maybe we are caught in a net in some way.

His first camera, among other exhibits of his study, which will now probably become a memorial.

Again, a concert shirt with a tie.

A lot of literature awards, mostly Italian. He was an idol there.

He loved the computer, but he always remembered his favorite typewriter.

He wrote so many poems on it.

The one thing Yevtushenko lacked is fear.

He wasn't afraid to speak and write what others kept quiet about -

the tragedy of Babi Yar or the Soviet tanks on the streets of Prague.

He was more than just a poet for us.

A poet in Russia is a teacher of life, not just a poet.

Yevtushenko taught all of us life.

For me, when I was 14-15 and read and memorized my first Yevtushenko poems, those were life lessons.

Being a people's poet doesn't mean pounding your chest and screaming of it on every corner.

He is the people's poet, because he did everything for his people.

For example, "Do the Russians want war" became sort of a hymn.

He also

wrote several songs, and people didn't even know it was his authorship.

For example, "Snowflakes are falling, sliding round and round", that was his.

In the bright streets, amid the white flutter. People walk close to each other...

His poems became songs and parts of movies by Eldar Ryazanov.

This is why I feel down: I faithful old friend doesn't come to visit.

He read these words just a while ago on the Russia TV channel.

During one of his last TV appearances on the kids' talent show "Blue Bird"

two generations sang in sync.

This is why I feel down: She's not the one I want to be with.

He was an incredible man, just incredible.

He was fun,

kind and very reliable.

He was a friend.

Among his idols are Mayakovsky, Yesenin and Pasternak.

Yevgeny Yevtushenko will be buried in Peredelkino, next to Pasternak.

This was the poet's last wish.

I sing and drink

not thinking of death.

I spread my arms and fall into the grass.

And if I die in this world,

I'll die from the happiness of living.

GERMANY SHOWS THE WORLD HOW TO MAKE ELECTRICITY IN A DISUSED COAL MINE

A coal mine that supported German industry for nearly half a century is getting revamped

as a giant battery that stores excess solar wind and energy.

Located in the state of North-Rhine Westphalia, the coal mine, named Prosper-Haniel, will

be turned into a 200 megawatt pumped-storage hydroelectric reservoir.

The reservoir will act like a battery, and will be able to power more than 400,00 homes.

The decision to turn the coal mine into a pumped-hydro-storage station will generate

new economic activity in a region known for generations for its reliance on fossil fuels

for workers livelihoods.

It will also push renewable energy further into the spotlight helping to maintain

electric capacity regardless of wind and sun conditions.

State governor Hannelore Kraft noted the town of Bottrops sympathetic ear to sustainable

and cost-effective storage during a speech in the state capital, Dusseldorf, earlier

this month.

People had worked the 600 meter deep mine in Bottrop since 1974, and Kraft prides the

transformation for ensuring power remains uninterrupted for the country.

There is even talk that additional mines will be converted similarly once Prosper-Haniel

is finished since, looking to double the share of renewables in its power mix to 30% by 2025,

the state needs more industrial-scale storage.

North-Rhine Westphalia generates a third of the nations power, of which aging coal

plants remain the most used.

However, Europes energy transition has intensified, making the desire for bigger

and better storage a pressing issue.

Researchers from a number of German universities have teamed up to work alongside private engineering

companies and the government on the project.

They believe the pits elevation will make way for hydroelectric storage.

If the water can flow downwards, it will power turbines and produce electricity, and then

water will be pumped back up again during periods of low demand.

In regions such as the Rhineland or the Ruhr area, the lack of relief in the landscape

does not provide the necessary height differences [for hydroelectric power], the projects

website explains.

The mine will close in 2018, and then work on the new project will begin.

Germanys most populous state, North-Rhine Westphalia makes up a fifth of the nations

economic output and is home to utilities RWE AG, EON SE, Steag GmbH, Uniper SE and Innogy

SE that exemplify its traditional connections to coal and power generation.

Low wholesale power prices at some of Germanys oldest coal plants owned by the utilities,

however, have led to their closure.

In fact, plans have already been made to shut down 27 of the older coal- and gas-fired generators

with a combined capacity of 6.6 gigawatts, which is enough power for 13 million average

homes.

The project will allow for 1 million cubic meters of water to plunge as far down as 1,200

meters when wind and solar power wont suffice, turning the turbines at the foot of the collierys

16-miles of horizontal shafts.
