Hello this is BBC World News I'm Ben
Bland our top stories North Korea has
launched another ballistic missile the
US military says the test failed and did
not pose the threat to America, it comes
just hours after the United States warned
of dire repercussions if the world
doesn't persuade North Korea to give up
its nuclear ambitions. Failing to act now
on the most pressing security issue in
the world may bring catastrophic
consequences. On the eve of Donald
Trump's 100th day in office we are in
Ohio finding out what voters there
making this presidency so far. Also in
the program Pope Francis visit Egypt
hoping to improve relations between
Christians and Muslims
Hello welcome to BBC News I'm Ben Bland
we start with breaking news from North
Korea in the last couple of hours the US
military and South Korean officials have
confirmed North Korea has fired a
ballistic missile which exploded shortly
after liftoff the launch came just hours
after a special session of the UN
Security Council in which the u.s.
pushed for tougher sanctions on the
Pyongyang regime, the US Secretary of
State Rex Tillerson chaired the special
session as I listened to some of the
statements from that meeting. With each
successive detonation and missile tests
North Korea pushes North East Asia and
the world closer to instability and
broader conflict the threat of a North
Korea nuclear attack on Seoul or Tokyo
is real and it is likely on a matter of
time before North Korea develops the
capability to strike the US mainland
indeed the DPRK has repeated repeatedly
RK has repeated repeatedly claimed it
plans to conduct such a strike given
that rhetoric the United States cannot
idly stand by, nor can other members of
this council within striking
distance of North Korean missiles. Mr.
president China is not a focal point
problems under peninsula under the key to
solving the nuclear issue and peninsula
does not lie in the hands of the Chinese
side, that said as close neighbor to the
Peninsula and with the
responsible attitude for peace and
stability on the peninsula and in the
region China has over the years has made
on effort and played a unique
role in promoting negotiated solution of
these issue I want to reiterate China's
firm opposition against the u.s.
deployment of THAAD and anti—missile
system in the DPRK it is a move that
seriously undermines the strategic
security of China and other countries in
the region and it damages the trust in
the cooperation amongst the parties
under Peninsula issue it is detrimental
to achieving denuclearization
achieving denuclearization and
maintaining long-term stability on
Peninsula. A short while ago I spoke to my
colleague Barbara Plett-Usher who's at the UN
headquarters in New York and she
the latest on this latest missile test
what we have unofficially is US
officials being reported on the
circumstances of the tests they have
apparently been tracking it they haven't
identified the type of missile that it
was but the early indications are that
the missile test failed and that is
corroborated by reports from the South
Korean news agency which said it looks
as if that missile blew up in flight as
the South Korean military seems to think
it was a ballistic missile fired north
of the capital but they're also still
looking into the the the path of it and
how long it was in the air and what
exactly happened and of course this
comes in the context of tensions having
risen quite significantly between the
u.s. and North Korea in recent days, well
yes in fact the existing sanctions
imposed new ones and also take steps to
isolate the Korean the North Korean
regime diplomatically further than it
has been already and they signaled will
resolve about this the Secretary of
State said that at the end of the day
the reason they wanted to step up this
campaign because they viewed this as a
national security threat to the to
America and therefore they wouldn't
couldn't let it pass and so he said to
the Security Council they want a
diplomatic solution and they will pursue
one but they stand ready to take
military action if they feel that
becomes necessary, Barbara Plett-Usher
let me just bring you some more breaking news the Reuters news agency
reporting that a US official says the
Trump administration could possibly
speed up new economic sanctions on North
Korea in response to this latest test
the u.s. also says it could have
additional naval drills and aircraft or
ship deployment as a show of force US
official is also saying that new
sanctions could target specific North US
officials also saying that new sanctions
could target specific North Korean and
possibly Chinese entities and they also
say they had expected some kind of North
Korean provocation ahead of the
elections in South Korea that are
happening on the 9th of May we will of
course
across any developments on that story
and bring them to you as we get them
here on BBC News. On Saturday the US
President Donald Trump marks 100 days in
office he will spend the actual
anniversary at a big rally in
Pennsylvania coincidentally the rally is
being held at the same time as the White
House Correspondents Dinner which is
traditionally attended by the incumbent
president today mr. Trump met some of
his perhaps staunchest supporters at a
meeting of the gun lobby group the
National Rifle Association. but we have
news that you've been waiting for for a
long time the 8-year assault on your
Second Amendment freedoms has come to a
crashing end her Second Amendment
freedoms has come to a crashing end
you have a true friend and champion in
the White House
no longer will federal agencies be
coming after law-abiding gun owners no
longer will the government be trying to
undermine your rights and your freedoms
as Americans instead we will work with
you by your side we will work with the
NRA to promote responsible gun ownership
to protect our wonderful hunters and
their access to the very beautiful
outdoors you met my son I can tell you
both sons they love the outdoors frankly
I think they love the outdoors more than
they love by a long shot
5th Avenue but that's ok and we want to
ensure you love the outdoors more than
they love by a long shot
5th Avenue but that's ok and we want to
ensure you of the sacred right of
self-defense for all of our citizens
well more on that Donald Trump's first
hundred days in power now he was to
follow the trail of support for mr.
Trump you'd find he enjoys popularity in
the so-called Rust Belt it's a region
that suffers from economic decline
population loss an urban decay the BBC's
Nick Bryan traveled to the state of Ohio
one of the key swing states in last
November's election to see what voters
there make of Donald Trump's first 100
days when we visited the Ohio River
Valley last summer this stretch of water
was suffering a slow and agonizing death
but since Donald Trump became president
locals have seen a dramatic and instant
turnaround a Rust Belt revival coal
barges are full again partly because of
the relaxation of environmental
regulations a hundred and fifty boats
now work this part of the river compared
to just 25 last year back then Bob
Harrison told us America needed a
businessman as president in 25 years
he's never seen such a turnaround, my
business turned on we're busy
only got more stuff going on and our
business is traumatically picked up and
you think that's the Trump effect yes
you know like you know I I talk to
different people we talk about call to
Trump mom for now so it's been good for
us last summer in the town of Clinton
Pennsylvania we came across this huge
Trump sign erected by a one-time
Democrat might lever now it's been put
away in the barn but not through
embarrassment if anything his admiration
for Donald Trump has grown just speaking
with people they're more upbeat they
feel like the government isn't on their
back feels like they're their jackbooted
the government's off their neck so it
gives them a chance to thrive
he promised to revive chance to thrive
he promised to revive regions like this
do you think he's doing that yes I do
it was Trump's hothead temperament the
put off American football coach Bill
timko when we spoke to him last year
he's bombastic he's obscene and I just
can't I can't but I don't like the guy
now not only a change of sport but a
change of opinion in these first hundred
days Trump has won him over
well I've changed my mind because he
made campaign promises and he came
through and you know that's what you
want you want to see that the guy is
going to do what he said he's going to
do what about Twitter you need to stay
off of that okay you know that gets him
in a lot of trouble good Republican who
voted for Hillary Clinton and Baton Sam
was a staunch Trump critic and remained
so but nonetheless applauds his decision
to strike Syria even a blind squirrel
and that sometimes I believe that
Trump's response to the chemical attack
in Syria was 100% correct and I hope
that putting pressure on Russians and
the Assad regime regime will help to
bring an end to this war I hope that
Syria will be Donald Trump's not Donald
Trump has been suffering from
historically low approval ratings but in
this rundown region we didn't find much
evidence of buyer's remorse president
Trump has been much like candidate Trump
and while that's horrified liberals in
America's major cities who regard him as
a national embarrassment here in the
Rust Belt he is still widely viewed as a
potential national savior to Trump's to
America's but the region that won in the
presidency remains a strong hold it
Brandt BBC News Ohio let's look at some
of the other stories making news this
hour President Trump has signed an
executive order aimed at reducing
restrictions on oil drilling in the
Arctic the directive could enable
offshore oil and gas drilling in areas
that are currently off-limits it's the
latest in a series of executive orders
that reduced environment of limits it's
the latest in a series of executive
orders that reduce environmental
protections introduced by the Obama
administration the US economy slowed
dramatically in the first three months
of the year according to official data
GDP expanded at an annualized rate of
naught point seven percent in the first
quarter which was a sharp slowdown from
the 2.1 percent growth rate in the last
three months of last year
Brazil first general strike in more than
20 years has paralyzed public transport
and closed schools and banks across the
country there have also been reports of
striking workers blocking roads and
police using tear gas to disperse the
crowds trade unions call for the
stoppage - protests against president
Michelle tan Ayers pension reforms
Pope Francis wants funding to be cut off
from groups that promote violence he
says such acts cannot be committed in
the name of God
the Pope's appeal comes just weeks after
Egypt's Coptic Christian community was
targeted with two deadly Church bombings
on Palm Sunday during a speech in Cairo
the Pope said religious leaders were
duty-bound to unmask such violence our
religious affairs correspondent Martin
Bashir reports at the start of this
historic journey to Cairo a moment of
individual greeting for those of us on
the papal plane morning sir
what a feller Westerberg I asked the
Pope what he hoped to accomplish he
responded with a smile knowing that
words would come later
the warmth of the official welcome from
president Sisi for this first papal
visit in almost 20 years
contrasts with the treatment of Egypt's
9 million Christians 10% of the
population 3 weeks ago on Palm Sunday
so-called Islamic state says it was
behind the bombing of two Coptic
churches that killed dozens and injured
more than a hundred people
inter-religious dialogue was therefore
center stage at Pope Francis's most
important event of this two-day visit
yes
sharing a podium with the grand Imam of
al-azhar mosque the historic center of
Sunni Islam Pope Francis offered a
traditional greeting in Arabic tomorrow
and then launched into an unequivocal
condemnation of religion based brutality
live get llamo or not for they would
make gadelle let us say once more a firm
and clear no to every form of violence
vengeance and hatred carried out in the
name of religion or in the name of God
an audience of Christians and Muslims is
responding positively to the Pope's
message so we need the message of peace
now
but the Middle East so we need a message
of peace now for the Middle East
preferring about heavy as you are here
visit has been long awaited they brought
a message of coexistence across religion
it was an honor while a 36-hour visit to
Cairo is unlikely to transform relations
between Islam and the Catholic Church
Pope Francis has said that engagement
and encounter must be given the
opportunity to triumph over conflict the
day concluded with the Pope visiting his
Coptic counterpart Pope Tawadros
in San Mark's Cathedral where they
prayed for peace Martin Bashir BBC News
Cairo you're watching BBC news stay with
us still to come we'll have more on
Donald Trump's 100th stay in office as
we travel to America's border with
Mexico to find out what happened to that
wall nothing it seemed was too big to
withstand the force of the tornado the
extent of the devastation will lead to
renewed calls the government helped to
build better housing internationally
there are already been protests student
affairs it receives no warning of the
accident in these the Russians at first
denied anything had gone wrong an even
radioactivity levels began to increase
our side Russia were they forced to
admit the accident
so the mujahideen the mood here is of
great celebration this is the end of a
twelve year war for them they've taken
the capital which they've been fighting
for for so long it was seven o'clock in
the morning the day when power began to
pass from the minority to the majority
when Africa to 300 years reclaimed this
last white colony when Africa took 300
years reclaimed with last white colony
hello this is BBC news I'm Ben glans
with the latest headlines North Korea
has launched another ballistic missile
from a region north of its capital
Pyongyang the US government says the
test fails earlier the US Secretary of
State called for a new approach to force
North Korea to give up its nuclear
ambitions speaking at the UN he said
failure to act could bring catastrophic
consequences well actor is beached the
National Rifle Association today
President Donald Trump had home the
point that he would build a wall with
Mexico that's despite recent signs of
backing down over funding the barrier so
what can we expect in the next 100 days
on this issue
the BBC's James Cook explained how
things now stand along the us-mexico
border there is a fence along quite a
significant stretch of the border at the
moment there is a fence along quite a
significant stretch of the border at the
moment perhaps a third of the border
perhaps slightly less is fence at the
moment you can see it here we're just at
the Pacific end the Pacific Ocean just
over the hill there that's Mexico just
in that direction and it runs along that
way in the border itself goes some 2,000
miles or 3,000 kilometers towards the
Gulf of Mexico so building a wall all
the way along it almost everyone you
speak to actually on the border itself
tells you it's just not really practical
or necessarily desirable nonetheless
there's plenty of support among border
agents for beefing up security and
spending more money on the border and
building some new barriers and I've been
talking to one of those border agents
their union representative here in San
Diego Joshua Wilson from the National
Border Patrol cancel because during the
Obama administration quite frankly there
was no consequence for crossing the
border illegally and has only invited
people to come but this newfound will to
enforce the law has been a real
deterrent and the Border Patrol agents
are finally glad to have a friend in the
White House who supports us in our
mission the Border Patrol agents are
finally glad to have a friend in the
White House who supports us in our
mission with a wall worked you know wall
is just one layer in in a in our defense
posture a wall allows us to more easily
identify those who are crossing in
and interdict them but of course people
who work with immigrants with some
people who've crossed this border from
Mexico say that they have a very
different view they're very concerned
about that
the Trump administration they're
concerned about the direction it's
heading they're concerned about the
attitude of some of these border agents
under the new administration and I've
been talking to NRI camarones who found
it at an organization called border
angels which looks after some of those
migrants I was born here in San Diego
I've been here all of my life we really
hope that on the club doesn't go through
with that wall since there continues to
be less people crossing we hope that
it'll use his rhetoric and say since I'm
president let's build a crossing I don't
need to build the wall now we never
needed the wall we should be building
bridges of communication working with
our neighbors to the south we are
friendly nations communication working
with our neighbors to the south
we are friendly nations let's treat each
other with dignity and respect not
building these walls of hate in terms of
whether that wall is actually going to
be built that is going to be say say say
president Trump and his team what some
people are calling a beauty contest for
the wall here in California more than
200 companies have expressed an interest
between four and twenty we'll get a
chance to build prototypes that could
happen as soon as the summer but as you
say the funding to actually build it has
not yet by any means been agreed John
Waters is a director known for pushing
boundaries perhaps better known for his
cult movie hairspray the writer and
filmmaker was nicknamed the Prince of
puke so he might not seem the most
obvious person to give a university
commencement speech but he did just that
in 2015 and his advice to the graduates
when it went viral it led to a book
called make trouble at the BBC Laura
Trevelyan spoke to him about what he
meant by that title and the message that
is sent well make trouble and a good
well make trouble in a good way because
that's used responsibilities is to shake
things up don't get on your parents
nerves get on the coolest kids in your
school those are two years ahead of
yours nerves that's how you make you
make your mark okay I'm supposed to
inspire you
how's this somehow I've been able to
make a living doing what I love best for
50 years without ever having to get a
real job
say in your own life your teachers
discourage you from every single dream
you've ever had so how did you end up
well because it was anger you know what
happens is they discourage your dreams
in school what they do and the men turns
to anger net turns to drugs and that
turns to lunacy and then that turned to
my career but basically I was lucky
because I always knew what I wanted to
do I didn't really need to go to school
I was one to be in show business since I
was 12 years old so I kind of knew where
I was going to end up when you look at
your own career as this storage
subversive filmmaker what inspiration do
you think today's students could draw
from that well that nobody said you can
make those close now well that nobody
said you can make those kind of movies
when I did it today you could today
every college you go to would let you
make a pink flamingos they're looking
for the next crazy kid that's making a
film on a cell phone camera with me they
didn't but keep asking and know is free
do not fear rejection in show business
because people are going to always say
no if I catch I can you just need one
person to stop you say in the book that
the only truly devious movie you ever
made was half way that coal traffic can
you explain in what way TV well I think
if the only Luthor went beyond being a
cult classic to me Colton Holley was the
word you never said because it means 12
smart people liked it and it made no
money hairspray is playing everywhere in
the world every high school was doing
the musical of it so it's still a
musical about two men are singing a love
song or white girl dating a black guy
stuff that maybe middle America used to
not be so comfortable with and maybe
they just didn't notice because
hairspray is kind of infectious it's
pretty hard to mess it up you also have
advice on technology you say use it for
transgression not so they have advice on
technology you say use it for
transgression not for lazy social living
is pretty pointed advice well of course
everybody's on technology today they can
be lazy if you're on Facebook all the
time you don't to get dressed you don't
have to go out you have to wash your
hair you know you need interaction with
real people too so I think sometimes it
is lazy social living and
mind but at the same time you've got to
know how to use it it's crazy people my
agent say oh I'm not into all that now
I'm not on Facebook because I want to be
harder to reach I work 10 hours but
people I'm interested in from my past
I already stock their houses I know what
they look like you have advice for
parents too in your book and you say
that your own parents made you feel safe
is that what gave you the courage to be
creative yeah my parents were horrified
by what I did but I think they figured
what else could I do I we you got to
work with what your kids like you can't
order up your kids if your daughter
comes home she'd cut through their whole
face well maybe she'll open a tattoo
shop you got to work with what you got
but at the same time you've got to
expect your parents give them a little
time just because you've got horn
implants maybe they're going to have a
little hard time implants maybe they're
going to have a little hard time
accepting that give him a week or two
we're recording this interview in the
era of President Trump does he embody
the creative chaos for making trouble
that you're talking about well he
certainly is an outsider he believes and
I'm trying to be an insider these days I
think we need to get in and screw it up
from the inside in a good way I'm
certainly not a trump supporter and I
don't think you've ever said much funny
so to me if you ever want to get anyone
to listen and change your mind you have
to make them laugh first John Waters
thank you so much thanks for having me
plenty of things Los Angeles its famous
for but maybe calorie filled sweet
treats aren't part of its usual image
and you pop up museum those open they're
dedicated to ice cream oh it's pretty
psychotic
waiting on an idea to get there and it's
pretty gnarly with the I got that sort
of like pop art style like being
reviving autocannon sugar and I just
remind you the breaking news from this
hour the US military has confirmed that
North Korea have fired a ballistic
missile is understood though the launch
was unsuccessful the Reuters news agency
is reporting that US officials say the
Trump administration could speed up new
economic sanctions on North Korea in
response and it could also have
additional naval drills an aircraft or
ship deployment Japan has also condemned
the launch we'll bring you more as we
get it if I may a most of the team there
on Twitter and at Ben M plant please
well the bank holiday weekend is upon us
let's see what the weather's up to it is
looking a little bit mixed a little
breezy but reasonably warm I think for
most of us and there is some rain on the
way but not everybody is going to get
the rain let's see the weather map then
in the short term so weather fronts are
fairly close to the UK but far enough to
give us a dry start to the day so this
is what it looks like around 4:00 5:00
in the morning lots of clear spells
around temperatures in towns and cities
around six to nine degrees Celsius so
not a particularly chilly start to the
day and then Saturday morning dawns on a
bright if not sunny note for most of us
there will be a little bit of cloud here
and there but the clouds will break up
through the course of morning and
actually the best of the sunshine on
Saturday is expected across the southern
half of UK especially the south coast
looking at to see there might be clearer
than a half of UK especially the south
coast looking at to see there might be
clear blue skies temperatures at
lunchtime until one o'clock there 15
degrees in London but for most of us
around 12 13 degrees and just maybe one
or two light stray showers around but
that's pretty much it nice enough there
in inverness as well around 12 degrees
with some sunshine in the afternoons not
going to change much it will turn quite
breezy though across some of these
western airs maybe even later on in the
day in northern ireland around the coast
it could even touch gale force
how we doing compared to the rest of
Europe on Saturday actually fairly
similar there in Paris 17 degrees but we
are doing better than Madrid in Madrid
around 14 degrees Rome will be sunny at
22 Celsius and the real heat at the
moment is across so grief there into the
30s now back to the UK so Saturday into
Sunday low pressure still out there in
the Atlantic but starting to push
weather fronts ever closer so already on
Sunday the weather will be going
downhill across southwestern parts of
the UK quite strong winds as well not to
be going downhill across southwestern
parts of the UK quite strong winds as
well not just in the southwest
also the sunniest spots too so along
that North Sea coast really blustery
winds were feeling quite chilly I think
on the coast but ahead of this weather
front and the rain it could get up to 18
in London and possibly the middle the
high teens in Scotland as well then
through the course of the evening so
this is Sunday evening that rain will be
slowly pushing a little bit further
north and east and by the time we get to
Monday you can see the weather front
across the north and the chance of
catching some showers across southern
air so a bit of a mix certainly the best
day of the weekend looks as though will
be Sunday with dry weather across the UK
and this is what the average temperature
is this time of the year 16 in the south
14 in the North so that's roughly what
we're getting
a month since article 50 was triggered
the EU meets to give its response to
Britain's decision to leave the BBC News
