ten tens of thousands of protests in US
cities over climate change much as their
anger is directed at President Trump who
is marking his first 100 days in office
European leaders take just four minutes
to unanimously approve a negotiation
strategy for Britain's withdrawal from
the EU, the end of the date was much
easier - to keep all of them United than
I expected and today it was also a very
strong mandate. Pope Francis calls for
international mediation to ease tensions
between the U.S. and North Korea saying
the situation has become too hot and
triumphs for British heavyweight Anthony
Joshua whose new heart and triumph a
British heavyweight Anthony Joshua who's
beaten veterans Ukrainian Vladimir
Klitschko to claim the vacant WBA title
Hello and welcome to the program it's
seen as a vital marker for all US
presidents 100 days in office and
Donald Trump reaches that milestone tens
of thousands of protesters are rallying
in several US cities in Washington where
one of those protests is taking place
demonstrators made their way towards the
White House holding banners and voicing
their concerns over his policies on the
environment Donald Trump has there
previously called climate change a hoax
here are the thoughts of some of those
attending this protest some of those
attending this protest here on this
earth we depend on for everything we
don't take care of earth we don't have
anything I want the next generations and
future generations to be able to live in
this planet without being polluted and
contaminated by by government and by
corporations in defense of our
environment for the climate because we
need to do it and we believe it
while we're expecting President Trump to
speak in the next half an hour or so a
long way from Washington who's chosen to
appear at a rally in Harrisburg which is
the state capital of Pennsylvania here's
what some of these supporters waiting
for the president to arrive had to say
the fact is he got in there and he's
doing what he said he was going to do
I've never seen that and I'm a historian
I've never seen any history either
especially from yesterday his speech
with the N I'm especially from yesterday
his speech with the NRA
that was very important to me not huge
Reagan supporter and you see him go up
to the NRA and do that speech for a
second Amendment right up my alley
well also at that rally in Harrisburg is
our correspondent Laura Becker Laura
it's interesting that Donald Trump is
chosen Harrisburg to hold this rally
just tell us why
while when it comes to Pennsylvania it
was a crucial swagman stating with these
states that helped him win the White
House he turned it into a Republican
State and when you listen to people
standing telling us is that they lost
their job practices the growth mining
countries the industry country and they
feel the stolen from the ligament a
non-politician
who I wonder who is separate from the
politics that they see and many of them
believe is from they want him to is
separate from the politics that they see
and many of them believe in problems
they want him to take charge and bring
back to Pennsylvania and that's one of
the main reasons while people here are
voting for him now the interesting thing
here is the contrast two main events
that will be taking place this night
this was known as the White House
correspondent whether it be an annual
affair in Washington it very very
quickly usually the president will
attend active extinction cycles and more
presidents have attended to have sort of
company the Franklin Norfolk a few
decades instead he'll be standing on
podium behind me aggressing Wow
people that he believes are his people
allora they're his supporters but in
Washington and some other cities protest
this has been an interesting 100 days
for Donald Trump
well hey Donald Trump said the other day
that there has well Donald Trump said
the other day that there has been
nothing like the last 100 days on that I
think for his critics and his supporters
will agree let's look like you've had
the Russia controversy you had the
photography over here sir
I came to issue a travel ban you had the
controversy over his trying to repeal
and replace Obamacare and of course he
did perfect success in him appointing a
Supreme Court judge many people in the
queue that I talked to mention that by
name when it comes to his failures oh
and you speak to his people you speak to
his supporters they see and many of them
surprisingly blamed Republicans not just
Democrats they believe he's not getting
the support we need from the Republican
Party only they'll be interesting when
it comes to the midterms next year
because Republicans are starting to
campaign when it comes to being
reelected and will they be reelected on
Donald Trump cocktails or the opposite
will they not be be reelected on Donald
Trump cocktails or the opposite will be
stands up to Donald Trump and hooked up
hope they'll be reelected speaking to
people here in Pennsylvania they said
they would vote Republican unless they
back Donal top but that's what you would
expect to hear from a roomful of Donald
top supporters absolutely Laura in terms
of Donald Trump first 100 days how is
that being received across the United
States
this is such a vast country that it's
very difficult to summarize how many
people feel if you look at the lakes of
DC New York California you've seen a
number of protests spring up a lot of
people feel and are worried about this
presidency you heard earlier from
climate change protesters to fear a very
signing away acts that President Obama
had tried to help the environment to try
to keep the Paris climate change
agreement on track and he'd also like to
stop drilling in the Arctic all with
historical pens Donald Trump I got rid
of just yesterday track and he'd also
tried to stop drilling in the Arctic all
with a stroke of pen Donald Trump I got
rid of just yesterday and then you have
when it comes to his supporters perhaps
in the Rust Belt the our patients ER
waiting because they believe that this
president will come through for him all
will be I suppose reveals at the end of
this term when it goes for reelection or
a bigger from Harrisburg in Pennsylvania
thank you very much well you can get
much more on Donald Trump's first 100
days on our website including this quiz
where you can test your knowledge about
his policies and work out whether you'd
hire or fire him that's all at bbc.com
forward slash news or you can go to our
BBC News app let's go to Brussels now
here the president of the European
Commission has warned that so many
people in Britain are under estimating
the difficulties of brexit jean-claude
Juncker was speaking after EU leaders
unanimously agreed they're negotiated
difficulties of brexit jean-claude
Juncker was speaking after EU leaders
unanimously agreed their negotiating
position on Britain's departure from the
Union from Brussels
here's Damien comb Atticus
at the heart of the EU today European
leaders 27 of them ready for brexit
their offer to the UK ready to go we all
want a close and strong future
relationships with the UK there's
absolutely no question about this
but before discussing the future we we
have to sort out our fuss lamia good
morning Michele bonnie is a man tasked
with enforcing the --use position
everything ready for the UK negotiation
its concerns are shared by EU leaders -
what are you leaders are most worried
about is what Angela Merkel has called
illusions on the British side about what
can be achieved in brexit negotiations
this process today is about injecting a
bit of realism into the debate what can
be achieved in brexit negotiations this
process today is about injecting a bit
of realism into the debate but we use
red lines it took the 27 just minutes to
sign off on their negotiating guidelines
they're clear brexit talks will be in
phases stage 1 the UK must satisfy their
demands on exit terms what illusions do
you think some in the UK harbor if -
money
sometimes I have the impression that
some in Britain I don't mean the
government do not understand the process
with set a phase negotiation this gives
me the opportunity to say again there is
no conspiracy no one is ganging up on
Britain eyes but the EU is being firm -
resumes desire to talk about a future
trade deal early on won't be entertained
first that you want to agree a guarantee
of citizens rights meaning the rights to
live work and study now enjoyed by 4
million people
EU citizens in the UK British citizens
in the a financial settlement in the UK
must agree to pay all its portion B to
pay all its portion of EU spending up to
2020 and solutions to avoid new border
controls between north and south in
Ireland
but I said be patient and the EU side
believe even agreeing the first item on
their list citizens rights won't be
straightforward jean-claude Juncker says
the EU is ready to give guarantees he
isn't so sure about the UK we have
already prepared a text which could be
adopted immediately if a rigid friend
would be ready to sign it like that that
will probably not happen and that's just
one stumbling block money could be
another before any talk about trade
deals will start Ingram Atticus BBC News
Brussels well Chris Morris is in
Brussels for us with the response from
Britain
well Britain's brexit Minister if you
like the Secretary of State for leaving
European Union David Davis has said you
know these talks going to be tough at
times they're going to be
confrontational I need to jested there
are people both with it and he suggested
there are people both within the EU and
in the UK who are going to seek to
undermine them I think Britain's
probably been a little bit surprised by
just how quickly the EU has come to this
show of unity and I think there is
definitely concern here in Brussels not
just among EU officials but among
several member states of if you like a
gap of expectation emerging about how 27
countries that the remaining EU believe
negotiations can go and how quickly they
can move forward and the feeling that
there is in London it was very notable I
think that both Donald Tusk and
jean-claude Juncker were saying you know
we are a little bit surprised that some
of the things some of the statements
we've heard coming out of London they
know that there's an election going on
and during election time they're all
politicians they know that during
elections people say things aimed very
much at their own domestic audiences but
the fact for example on them one of the
most important initial issues that the
rights of EU citizens who are in the UK
and of course British citizens elsewhere
in the EU Don also saying whisker in the
EU Donald so saying we're still
essentially waiting for a serious
British proposal on this and mr. Younker
adding we have a proposal that could be
signed tomorrow but I doubt that the
British are ready to do that so I think
there is concern you heard if mr.
Younker about the
being unaware of the level of technical
difficulties there is concern that this
might remote room move rather more
slowly than some people are hoping Chris
Morris reporting that let's get some
other stories for you this hour and in
his first public speech after more than
20 years in exile the veteran Afghan
warlord Gilberto HEC mafia has called on
the Taliban to lay down their weapons
known as the butcher of Kabul for his
attack from the capital he signed a
peace deal with the Afghan government in
September
speaking in eastern Afghanistan he urged
militants to stop what he called the
pointless war a day of mourning has been
declared in Kyrgyzstan after at least 24
people died in a landslide following
heavy rain nine children were a
multi-link heavy rain nine children were
among the dead in a village in the
country's ash region president attend
buyers said people did not heed advice
to leave the area when they were warned
Pope Francis has called for
international mediation to eased
escalating tensions between the United
States and North Korea he said the
situation had become too hot he urged
the United States and North Korea to
defuse their increasingly tense standoff
never say potentially dangerous conflict
he also directly appealed to the United
Nations to take a leading role in
resolving the conflict my baby whether
they meet healing in our body i these
missiles in Korea it's been a year that
they've been talking about it but now it
seems the issue has heated up too much I
always appeal for a solution through
diplomatic means
the future of humanity widened war would
destroy I don't say half of humanity but
a good party but a good part of humanity
and culture of everything it would be
terrible let's stop and find a
diplomatic solution there I think the
United Nations have the duty to resume
their leadership because it has become
too watered down well this comes after
North Korea test-fired another ballistic
missile which reportedly exploded short
take off kevin rudd is the former prime
minister of australia and he spoke to me
a short while ago about his view on
president Trump's strategy on North
Korea I think the president's strategy
has one objective at this stage and that
is to apply maximum pressure on China
China is the only one with effective
political and diplomatic leverage on
Pyongyang at present because of North
Korea's economic and financial and
energy dependency on the People's
Republic of China and so therefore what
President Trump I believe is seeking to
do based on his disgust discussions at
mar-a-lago and so therefore what
President Trump I believe is seeking to
do based on his disgust discussions at
mar-a-lago is to keep that pressure on
in the hope that Beijing can actually
bring about through political pressure
exchanging North Korean behavior do you
think that strategy is going to work
too early to tell is has not been tried
with this level of focus before China as
most people are aware and has been
reluctant to deploy at this level of
political or diplomatic leverage in the
past not just because of historical as
it were relationship reasons was North
Korea going back to the Korean War half
a century or more ago but because China
is on being plain about the fact that it
does not want to see a configuration on
the peninsula it does not want to see
the collapse of the regime and it does
not want to see any American troops
one-day landing on the Yalu in what
would and it does not want to see any
American troops one-day landing on the
yellow in what would then be a vacated
territory in the north this is therefore
a very complicated and multi-layered
situation what sense is there that China
is going to play ball you know something
we don't know
there are divided opinions in Beijing on
this question and frankly for any
government this would be a very hard
call on the one hand they don't want the
nuclear proliferation on the Korean
Peninsula they don't want South Korea or
Japan developing their own retaliatory
nuclear deterrent particularly the
latter too began to lose faith in the
application of a u.s. nuclear deterrent
long-term but on the other hand they
have big cautions about the great
unknowns which flow from putting
pressure on Pyongyang do you see then
the regime of Kim jong-eun fall or do
you just see him fall and replace by
someone who they even less familiar with
now so this is the divided debate within
Beijing at present fall and replaced by
someone who they even less familiar with
now so this is the divided debate with
in Beijing at present then I think is
where the core politics within China and
diplomacy lies as far as the United
States is concerned Kevin Rudd former
Prime Minister of Australia speaking to
me earlier stay with us here on BBC News
still to come the promise was glamour
and luxury the reality a bad cheese
sandwich and a night in a tent will tell
you why punters who pay thousands to
attend this music festival are not happy
nothing it seemed was too big to
withstand the force of the tornado
the extent of the devastation will lead
to renewed calls the government helped
to build better housing internationally
there have already been protests Sweden
says it received no warning of the
accident indeed the Russians at first
denied anything have gone wrong indeed
the Russians at first denied anything
had gone wrong
only when radioactivity levels began to
increase our side Russia were they
forced to admit the accident
for the mujahideen the mood here is of
great celebration this is the end of a
12 year war for them they've taken the
capital which may be fighting for them
so long it was seven o'clock in the
morning the day when power began to pass
from the minority to the majority when
Africa for three hundred years reclaimed
this last white colony
this is BBC news here are the latest
headlines tens of thousands of people
are protesting in US cities over climate
change much of their anger is directed
at President Trump who is marking his
first 100 days in office who is marking
his first 100 days in office European
leaders have taken just four minutes to
unanimously approve a negotiation
strategy for Britain's withdrawal from
the EU series after winning a referendum
to extend his powers the government of
President Erdogan in Turkey has launched
a crackdown nearly four thousand
officials have been fact in the latest
purge following the failed coup last
year and one of the world's most visited
websites Wikipedia has been blocked this
is what anyone trying to visit the site
would see if they try and access it the
government say Wikipedia is trying to
run a smear campaign against the country
it also suggests the website is
cooperating with militants well in order
to justify the move the government used
laws designed to protect national
security and public order well I've been
getting the views of ALP taka he is part
of the group turkey block which monitors
internet shutdowns in - taka he is part
of the group turkey block which monitors
Internet shutdowns in Turkey it is a
very widespread dock and it's affecting
the whole country in the last few hours
we've heard that the temporary banning
order has become a permanent blocking
order because it's got a cut court
judgment now so this looks like it's
something that's in for the long haul
why do you think Wikipedia has been
blocked in the country now why hasn't it
been blocked before in that case which
Peter has lost for a long time it's
actually unprecedented that such a large
international site like this has been
blocked we're used to the social media
blocking but this is slightly different
and this is different because Wikipedia
is actually a platform to reach out as
well
people in the country use Wikipedia to
present a Turkish point of view now if
we feed is blocked in Turkey that means
that Turks
unedited so it's almost handing over the
editorial decision to two other
countries so it's a policy that could
backfire we're also hearing that four
thousand public officials have been
dismissed and population checked four
thousand public officials have been
dismissed and popular dating shows
banned what justification is the
government using for these sorts of
moves well it's part of a crackdown it
was a response against the coup a lot of
people in the country support that they
see a huge threat in the country and the
Internet censorship is part of that
crackdown and it's seen as the digital
sensor this is a measure to protect the
country but it seems that an awful lot
of firm innocent people are getting
caught up it's it's effectively online
sphere lots and that's what we've been
tracking the censorship of websites but
also these these mass change tension in
citizens which affects the whole country
out talker speaking to me a little
earlier well Jimmy Wales the founder of
Wikipedia has tweeted about this today
he said access to information is a
fundamental human right
Turkish people I will always stand with
you to fight for this right hashtag
turkey brittany's Anthony Joshua has
beaten Ukraine's Vladimir Klitschko to
become the brittany's Anthony Joshua has
beaten Ukraine's Vladimir Klitschko to
become the world heavyweight champion it
happened in front of a packed crowd in
Wembley Stadium in London the fight was
stopped in the 11th round after Joshua
sent his veteran opponent to the canvas
several times
Olly foster was at Wembley watching the
match for it was an absolutely
extraordinary fight Anthony Joshua
the IBF world champion was taken to a
very very dark place tonight he was
dropped to the canvas for the first time
in his career his 19th fight he had
already put Vladimir Klitschko down as
well in the fifth round Vladimir
Klitschko 14 years to his senior the
former world champion of the heavyweight
division undefeated in a decade he
thought he could get back
to the top of my word he so nearly did
the Ukrainian but there was an
unbelievable response from Anthony
Joshua this is the longest fight in his
this is the longest fight in his
professional career he then knocked out
Klitschko in the eleventh round all
Klitschko had to do was hang on to the
end of the fight he was ahead at one
point he was ahead on point in this
fight but Joshua knocked him down three
times in the eleventh round and the
referee had to stand had to intervene
and the fight was all over
Olly foster reporting from a rowdy
wembley stadium now it was advertised as
the ultimate in luxury but a new
festival in the bahamas was anything but
harvey Biggs has the story this is how
the festival would build a culture of
mind games boasting of having what it
claims is some of the greatest artists
on earth fire festival offered a weekend
on a private island in the Bahamas
rubbing shoulders with the rich and
famous with tickets costing up to twelve
thousand dollars for four person package
an event heavily promoted on social
media the one that ended up creating a
viral buzz of a different kind after
headline act of blink-182 pulled out
first of all goers arrived on Friday to
find utilitarian white tents
accommodation some describe is like a
refugee camp on the menu cheese
sandwiches instead of gourmet cuisine
hours later
organizers postponed the events and then
cancel it altogether saying their teens
was overwhelmed that led to chaotic
scene at the airport as people tried to
get off the yard
many turned to social media to vent
their frustration describing the event
as a complete disaster festival
co-organizer rapper Ja Rule took to
Twitter to apologize saying he was
heartbroken and the event was not a scam
organizers have now promised a full
refund to all festival goals and are
already looking ahead to next year
promising to be a bit less ambitious but
recovering from scenes like these but
recovering from scenes like these will
take one ambitious PR strategy
Harvey Biggs BBC world news now a man
who crawled around the route of the
London Marathon dressed as a gorilla has
completed the course more than a week
after he started Tom Harrison a police
officer called on his hands and knees on
the streets for up to 12 hours a day in
completing the feat he raised more than
34,000 dollars for a charity to save
gorillas competition and good for him
too now let's take you live to
Harrisburg Pennsylvania where President
Trump is getting ready to address a
rally he is marking his first 100 days
in office a vital marker for any US
president plenty of supporters there but
as we were saying there's also tens of
thousands of climate change protesters
in several US cities across the country
that's it for me in the team bye bye for
now
but um she that's it from me in the team
so bye for now
hello there good morning first parts of
the bank holiday weekend was pretty
quiet across most parts of the UK next
couple of days probably see those
temperatures rising a little bit away
from the East Coast where it will be on
the cool side I'll be a bit of a breeze
blowing in across all parts and it
wouldn't really be a bank holiday
weekend forecast without at least some
rain in the forecast that's coming from
this area of low pressure just ahead of
that we've got these are fairly tightly
packed isobars means it's really quite
windy but the wind is coming in from the
south which is bringing in that two
slightly milder air that low-pressure
system is also going to bring some rain
to far southwest first thing with that
southerly breeze it's not particularly
cold first thing most place at 8 9 10
maybe even 11 degrees but there is that
breeze of for all parts so bright and
breezy starts today but only
increasingly wet and windy down towards
the southwest blowing a gale here rain
get to the south of wales spreads its
way along the south coast so after a
lovely sunny Saturday on the south coast
well it's gonna be a rather different
sunday sunny Saturday on the south coast
well it could be a rather different
Sunday only 10 or 11 degrees and windy
underneath all that cloud and rain which
is not quite getting into the London
area just yet but it will do eventually
north of that rain that's a pretty
decent day actually too much of the
Midlands up into northern England always
warmer away from that eastern coast 10
11 degrees there in Newcastle but high
15 or 16 in Manchester it's pretty
reasonable temperatures in northern are
15 or so degrees in Colerain and the
western side of Scott and doing quite
well could see 16 17 degrees in the
northwest where it's at only eight or
nine along that's at North Sea coast
Premier League action no real problems
with the weather at Manchester United or
at Everton but in Tottenham I think we
will see some cloud and some rain
developing through the match and for the
journey home as well but no problems for
stage 3 of the atour to Yorkshire should
be a decent day but quite breezy that
breeze will still be blowing through the
evening that rain will spread its way a
bit further north getting up into North
Wales the North Midlands maybe into East
Anglia as well few showers in northern
England but generally it's the
north/south split with the northern half
of the UK actually fine and dry by door
andand it with the northern half of the
UK actually fine and dry by Dawn on Bank
Holiday Monday and temperature holding
up quite nicely those temperatures be in
the western side of Scotland dipping
down to around about 5
6° Bank Holiday Monday itself will be a
north-south split with most of the
showers across the southern half of the
UK
there'll be some spells of sunshine here
as well more than half of the UK does
quite well but again North Sea coastal
areas seen those temperature around
about 10 or so degrees at best there be
around about 15 or 16 at further west on
Tuesday again to be cooler cloudy and
gray up and down that eastern coast but
move your way inland and further west
much when where sunshine and higher
temperatures so the rest of this week
actually looking dry for the most part
the wind to be light for most places and
while it will be warm for many it's
always going to be cooler on that North
Sea coast
