Ryan Donato Goes From Harvard to Olympic Hockey Stardom

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — Ryan Donato officially introduced himself to the world of big-boy hockey a little more than seven minutes into Friday's game against Slovakia, when he wristed a laser past Jan Laco to open the scoring for the Americans.

Then he won the game with another score early in the third period.

But is Donato, a 21-year-old Harvard sniper — who had to lug his books with him in addition to his skates — enough to beat the Russians? After a 2-1 win against Slovakia on Friday, the United States hockey team faces a rough assignment Saturday when it takes on the team with "Olympic Athlete from Russia" on their sweaters in what, all things considered, has to be the weirdest United States-Russia hockey game in memory.

"My life is moving pretty fast right now," Donato said after Friday's win.

The Russians long ago got over the 1980 Miracle on Ice loss in Lake Placid.

The Soviet Union went on one of the great runs of any team in any sport after that, winning gold at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.

But a game that could go a long way toward making or breaking each team's campaign here takes place as tension is once again running high between the United States and Russia.

United States intelligence agencies have said Russia worked to disrupt the 2016 election.

Russia's president, Vladimir V.

Putin, has essentially blamed the United States and a handful of other Western nations for trumping up charges that got Russia's National Olympic Committee and dozens of its top athletes banned from these Games as punishment for a yearslong doping scheme that ultimately corrupted the testing lab at the 2014 Olympics.

Two investigations, one by the World Anti-Doping Agency and another by the International Olympic Committee, have confirmed this happened.

The hockey narrative is also complicated by the fact that the National Hockey League decided not to participate in these Games.

As a result, the best American players are back home, while Russia has a roster filled with members of its Kontinental Hockey League, including the former N.H.L.

stars Pavel Datsyuk and Ilya Kovalchuk.

The Russian team is the favorite on paper, but it has a history of underperforming at the Olympics of late.

Then there is Donato, a junior at Harvard and the son of Ted Donato, the Harvard coach and a former N.H.L.

and United States national team player.

Donato may be the top player on the American squad and may end up playing for the Boston Bruins by the spring.

He has also got a ton of work to do on papers for his classes in social psychology and the sociology of immigration while he's at the Games.

"Thankfully I don't have any exams," he said in recent interview.

"It's pretty difficult." For Donato, hockey appears to be less so.

He is among the fastest players on the ice.

Defensemen get twisted and panicky when he is skating at them.

He's the guy who always seems to get the puck in the surprising open spots on the ice where he can wreak the most havoc.

There's a reason he is on the power play.

Both goals Friday came when the United States had the man advantage.

The first happened after Troy Terry left the puck for him as he sliced into the slot.

On the second, he performed a 360 on the edge of the crease and slipped the puck past Laco.

The international game, with its larger sheet of ice and less banging than is typical in the United States, suits Donato's talents, although with eight minutes to go Friday, he took a crosscheck to the neck from Slovakia's, 6-foot-4, 240-pound defenseman Michal Cajkovsky and popped right back up.

The people at Harvard are familiar with all this.

Donato had 21 goals and 40 points last season, and he already has 21 goals in 23 games this year.

His emergence on the United States team, along with three other college players Coach Tony Granato selected rather than going exclusively with minor league or Europe-based pros, makes the showdown with Russia somewhat different than four years ago.

Back then, two rosters packed with N.H.L.

All-Stars dueled to a 3-2 shootout win for the Americans in Sochi.

Terry, who plays for the University of Denver and got an assist on Donato's first goal, said he grew up worshiping Kovalchuk and Datsyuk.

Now he is trying to get used to the idea of facing them on the ice.

Advertisement Continue reading the main story Two weeks ago, Donato and the forward Jordan Greenway, who plays for Boston University, were going up against each other in the Beanpot, the annual college hockey tournament in Boston.

Now, they account for three of the four goals scored by the United States at the Games.

(The Americans lost in overtime to Slovenia on Wednesday).

"It's a big stage for them, and they're doing great," said the captain Brian Gionta, who is 39 and was on a practice-only, minor league contract when he was named to this team.

Gionta played against Ted Donato in the N.H.L.

Donato said he talked to his father before the game against Slovakia.

His father told him to shoot low.

When he got the puck in the slot in the first period, that's what he thought of.

Granato said he might have mentioned similar advice before the game, too, but if Donato wanted to give credit to his father, that was fine with him.

Granato said Donato and the other college players have been fearless both in practice and games.

He doesn't expect that to change against the Russians.

"These guys are confident," Granato said.

"They want to be over the boards and on the ice and in the action." A version of this article appears in print on February 17, 2018, on Page D2 of the New York edition with the headline: First, the Sociology Paper.

Then, Facing Down Russia.

Why can't Jennifer Aniston keep a man? | news 24h - Duration: 12:37.

Why can't Jennifer Aniston find a lasting love? ALISON BOSHOFF asks the question that sends the Friends actress into a rage... but as her two-year marriage ends it's the one on everyone's lips

For Jennifer Aniston, it's all about the polish. She has virtually made a career out of being a middle-aged woman who glows like a teenager.

And so, as you might expect, her highly paid team is now doing its best to airbrush her brief, doomed marriage to actor Justin Theroux out of existence, and allow her to exit with as much dignity intact as possible.

The couple announced on Thursday night that they are separating. 'This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year,' said a statement.

'We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship.

It is a very inconvenient fact that Aniston — famously dumped by first husband Brad Pitt after he fell in love with Angelina Jolie — is getting divorced again and thus perpetuating the 'poor Jen' stereotype.

I'm told that those headlines drive her to fits of shrieking fury. Heartbreak: Jennifer and Brad Pitt, who left her for Angelina Jolie in 2005.

The statement about their split was issued in haste after denials in recent weeks that the marriage was floundering.

They made the decision to split after a make-or-break holiday in December in Mexico, but it seems they would have been content for the fiction of romantic contentment to continue — were it not for gossip of Theroux's behaviour at a celebrity party in New York last month.

There are suggestions that Theroux was behaving 'like a very single man' at a post-Grammys bash. Some even suggest he was kissing another woman — 'cherished friendship' with Aniston notwithstanding.

The rumours explain the stern words in their statement, drafted by their PR, no doubt straining every nerve to squash that 'Poor Jen' narrative.

'Given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another.'.

In plain English: no one dares say that Jen's been dumped again. What is to follow will be a bloodless divorce. Sources indicate that before they married in August 2015, Theroux was required to sign a pre-nuptial agreement.

The negotiations, aimed at protecting Aniston's £147 million fortune, went on for months.

In truth, you would always have had to be an optimist to count on the success of a union between Theroux, 46, an arty, motorbike-loving New Yorker and Jennifer Aniston, 49, a middle-aged superstar with masses of baggage.

As we shall see, Theroux openly deplores the mainstream culture which made his wife rich. He once sneered: 'If I was roped into a seven-year TV contract, I'd probably hang myself.'.

Aniston, of course, earned her fortune on the TV show Friends over the course of a decade.

The son of a corporate lawyer and Washington Post writer, Theroux was persuaded into marriage much against his instincts, having said for years that he wasn't the marrying kind.

During their relationship, he steadfastly refused to tone down his unconventional lifestyle and recently posted a picture of himself hanging out with the heavily tattooed rapper Wiz Khalifa, who was quite obviously smoking a large marijuana joint.

After their marriage, rumours of dalliances with co-stars followed, always swiftly denied. There were near constant separations due to work, with his HBO TV project The Leftovers being filmed in New York while his wife made movies in Hollywood.

He and Jennifer had got together after making the film Wanderlust together in 2010. He dumped his live-in girlfriend, costume designer Heidi Bivens in mid-2011 and took up with Aniston.

He proposed in August 2012 on his 41st birthday, and they married exactly three years later.

Jennifer's post-Brad romances with actor Vince Vaughn and musician John Mayer had been disasters, but she described Theroux as the 'nicest person in the world'. This may have been evidence of some serious romantic optimism.

A highly intelligent but unusual man, Theroux collects, for instance, both human and animal teeth. Some of this grisly collection were housed 'in a candy dish' at his New York home — a gruesome surprise for the unwary visitor.

In pride of place in his apartment are two pictures: one of girl disfigured by syphilis; another of two toddlers playing with a syringe.

They are a kind of monument to ghastly gothic-tinged bad taste and an immature sense of humour which you might think actively unpleasant. Jennifer remarked: 'I remember thinking he was very dark.

At first you think he could be like a serial killer.' She chose, though, to see him instead as 'quirky and hip', and indeed, his scripts for box-office hits Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2 have showcased undoubted talent.

Split: Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux.

The arrival of Aniston in his life certainly changed it. The respected columnist Jeanette Charlton reported early on in the romance that the pair had taken a private jet to Hawaii, with Aniston picking up the bill.

'Justin can't keep up with Jennifer's limousine lifestyle, so she's pretty much paying for everything,' she said.

Justin, more at home in hipster New York hangouts, was suddenly by her side at the Sunset Tower hotel in LA, where they mix a low-calorie Martini especially for her.

Theroux tried to fit in. He shaved off his beard, tidied up his beetling brows and developed an apparent weakness for a spray tan.

Theroux was also reliably there for Jennifer's red carpet events. He was fully behind her when she released a furious open letter in 2016 after speculation raged that she might be pregnant.

He said: 'I was very, very proud of her for writing that. She expressed herself beautifully.'.

Just before they got engaged, Jennifer spent £14 million on a new home in Los Angeles, complete with a vineyard, and £6 million on two connecting apartments in New York's Greenwich Village.

She says she's never been able to settle in New York because of the media attention, but she loved their Bel Air mansion.

Bizarrely, she told Architectural Digest, in an interview published last week, that she doesn't like to work as much any more.

'I look at my husband and my dogs and our home, and there's nowhere else I want to be,' she said. Perhaps it was wishful thinking.

Theroux and Aniston bought chickens for their Bel Air garden, and he said: 'You get beautiful fresh eggs every morning. We both walk down there to collect the eggs. It's a joint effort.'.

But clearly there wasn't enough 'joint effort' to sustain a marriage. Their break-up was very much a re-run of her final days with Brad Pitt — one last holiday before declaring it over.

Aniston and Theroux went to their usual holiday resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with mutual friends Jason Bateman and his wife, Amanda Anka. US Weekly said: 'Amanda has been the mediator, trying to get Jen and Justin to save their marriage.

Now, the internet is alight with suggestions that Jennifer and Brad Pitt might reconnect — after all his marriage to Angelina Jolie is over.

But no one who knows how deeply Brad hurt Aniston and how long it took her to rebuild her life after their 2005 divorce thinks that this is even remotely possible.

A source says: 'There is no way back there. She will be fine without Justin, and she doesn't need Brad Pitt, either.'.

Justin Theroux loads up SUV before couple's split news | news 24h - Duration: 18:58.

EXCLUSIVE: The great escape! Tense Justin Theroux packs his luggage into SUV on Valentine's Day as actor gets out of town with his brother, a day before announcing shock split from Jennifer Aniston

Justin Theroux was seen loading multiple suitcases into a black SUV on Wednesday, a day before news broke that his marriage to Jennifer Aniston was over.

The actor and director was accompanied by his brother and wore all black, with a dark hoodie and aviator shades, as his luggage was wheeled out of his New York City apartment.

The next day, on Thursday, Theroux and Aniston announced they had split at the end of last year, ending their two-year marriage.

Days before the news broke, a tense Theroux was seen around Manhattan, attempting to keep a low profile while running errands.

On Sunday, he celebrated Jennifers 49th birthday by sweating it out at a boxing class, and was seen hanging out with two female friends on Monday.

The 46-year-old had a lonely Valentines Day, simply taking his dog out for a stroll on Wednesday for leaving the city. Meanwhile, Aniston has been in Los Angeles, appearing on Ellen and attending the TV hosts 60th birthday bash last week.

Justin Theroux tried to keep a low profile in New York City days before he announced his shock split with wife Jennifer Aniston on Thursday. He was seen loading up a SUV with suitcases with his brother on Wednesday (pictured).

The actor and writer laid low on Tuesday but was seen on Wednesday walking his pitbull (pictured), shortly before he appeared to embark on a getaway .

The 46-year-old spent the actress 49th birthday boxing at a gym on Sunday, while the Friends actress celebrated her big day in Los Angeles .

Theroux was seen out with female friends in New York on Monday, shortly before news broke of his shock split with Jennifer Aniston, 49.

On Sunday, Theroux biked to Gotham Gym in the West Village for a boxing session. While inside the studio, he wore black gloves and a sleeveless grey tank as he sparred with a trainer.

The producer and director bundled up when he left the gym, sporting wireless earbuds for the bike ride home.

On Monday, he was seen out for a walk with two female friends, keeping his hands in his pockets as he strolled along a New York street beside the women.

Sunglasses firmly in place, the brooding actor wore dark clothing, with a messenger bag slung behind him. The outing mounted speculation about the state of the couples two-and-a-half year marriage after they spent Jennifers birthday apart on Sunday.

Theroux was out and about again on Wednesday morning, taking his dog for a brisk walk as he donned his staple aviator sunglasses.

Shortly after returning home, Theroux loaded up a large SUV with several suitcases, apparently taking a lengthy trip away from the city.

His low-key outings come after Aniston posed for the March cover of Architecture Digest, with Theroux suspiciously absent from the photo shoot, as she boasted that they were enjoying a life of domesticated bliss.

Theroux hasnt been spotted since news of their split broke, while Jennifer was seen heading into Sony Studios on Thursday in Los Angeles. Shortly before news of their breakup, Aniston posed for the March cover of Architecture Digest.

The magazines editorial team and photographer quickly realized something was amiss when Theroux was a no-show for the shoot, which occurred towards the end of last year, a source told DailyMail. com.

The producer and director bundled up when he left the gym on Sunday, sporting wireless earbuds for the bike ride home.

Shortly after returning from a dog walk on Wednesday, Theroux was seen loading up a large SUV with several suitcases, apparently taking a long trip away from the city.

Single again: Jennifer Aniston was seen out in public for the first time Thursday since announcing the end of her two-year marriage to Theroux.

The source, who was involved with the shoot, said that signs of a fractured relationship were plain to see, as very little of Therouxs belongings were on display and Aniston impressed on the team of the need to portray that her and her husband were in a happy marriage.

The article showed Aniston proudly posing in various rooms of the house she bought for $21 million in 2011, minus her husband.

The Friends star cut a solitary figure on the cover of the magazines March edition while the opening lines of the article gushed: High above Los Angeles, Jennifer Aniston crafts a scene of pure domestic bliss with husband Justin Theroux, a spectacular mid century house, and a trio of very happy dogs.

The mansion is up for sale and the pocket listing price is $75 million, which means the potential buyer must have a net worth of at least $200 million to even view the home.

In another passage Aniston, 49, explained to the publication: I look around at my husband and my dogs and our home, and theres nowhere else I want to be. But the source told DailyMail. com that all was not as it seemed.

The source explained: The AD shoot really sparked the beginning of the end of the truth coming out.

That was one of the most bizarre experiences for the editorial team given that they were expecting to do a shoot with Jennifer and Justin at their marital home.

They continued: But when they attended the house it soon became clear that it was entirely her place and not his.

Sure there were a few items around, but there was barely anything showing that Justin resided there.  There was hardly any photos of the happy couple on the walls, little trace of a man living there at all.

Signs of marriage troubles were evident when Jennifer Aniston posed for an architectural magazine (pictured) without Justin Theroux by her side, a source told DailyMail. com.

They said: It was all quite obvious, but then Jennifer was happy to act as if they were a happy couple and everything was great.

Then it was impressed on the team to include the lines that they are happily married and together in the storys editorial. When the magazine came out people were asking the team about the marriage, but everyone was sworn to secrecy.

There were some in the office who felt that the story actually raised more questions about the couple, given he was not in it.

com that the couple had been virtual strangers in the past 12 months with Theroux spending most of his time in New York, a city Aniston had left to escape the glare of the paparazzi and find privacy in a gated community.

Another source, who is connected to Netflix, which is producing Therouxs new TV show Manic, went further: Its an open secret that Justin has been living in New York pretty much since they got married.

His work has taken him there, but in truth his social life is there too. Sure he would go back to see Jen, but it was certainly no conventional marriage.

Justin just seemed focused on being the best actor he could be and creating content - in truth he is married to his career.

The last year especially he had not returned to LA that much. No-one can even remember him mentioning Jens name or talking about his marriage. Among some of the cast, people felt that they were living a Hollywood sham marriage.

He is just totally focused on his work and all about his next project, whether it was acting or writing.

Separated: Jennifer Aniston reportedly stopped regularly spending time with Justin Theroux several months ago, and was last photographed by TMZ at his New York City home in October.

com that the couple had been virtual strangers in the past 12 months with Theroux spending most of his time in New York, a city Aniston (pictured on Sunday) had left to escape the glare of the paparazzi and find privacy in a gated community.

Jennifer became engaged to the Leftovers actor, 46, in August 2012, and they married in a surprise ceremony at their LA home on August 5, 2015.

They originally met on the set of Ben Stiller and Jack Black comedy Tropic Thunder in 2007. The two reconnected and ultimately began dating when working together in 2012s Wanderlust.

The Hollywood couple were engaged on his 41st birthday while dining at Dan Barber restaurant Blue Hill in Greenwich Village, New York City in August 2012.

Last Friday, nearly a week before they announced their split, Aniston was forced to put a brave face on when good friend Ellen DeGeneres unwittingly made a joke about her marriage during an interview.

The awkward moment came when Jennifer surprised the TV host, 60, on her eponymous birthday-themed show last Friday.

Ellen had been discussing Jennifers popularity with the ladies back in the 90s, saying: I think a lot of people had crushes on you so they were hoping you were.

Jennifer replied: They did? How do you guys ever know? What are the clues?. Ellen added: Well they dont make it obvious like that. That would be creepy if you were like just looking somebody up and down..

I dont know how it works, Jennifer giggled. Ellen retorted: Its just I dont know, flirty or something. But I do think girls had crushes on you. Well its too late now!.

Yeah, Jennifer responded, not giving the news of her split away.    .

Well its too late now: Jennifer Aniston put a brave face on as Ellen DeGeneres made an awkward joke about her marriage to Justin Theroux. just days before they announced split.

The news of Anistons breakup was met with glee by some fans, hoping that she would reunite with her ex-husband Brad Pitt, who she split with in 2005. Pitt went on to marry Angelina Jolie but they filed for divorce in 2016.

But a source at People said the two have not talked in ages and she has changed a lot since she was last with the Troy hunk. They haven't seen each other in ages.

For well over a decade now they have lived totally separate lives and so not surprisingly, they have become totally different people than who they once were when they were together, said an insider. But they have texted each other.

They aren't in regular contact, beyond an occasional text back and forth to wish each other the best when there's been a new project or big event, added the source. Pitt and Aniston divorced in 2005 after five years of marriage.

They broke up, and they did it because they had serious issues, said the source. They remember why it didn't work..

The source also made it seem as if they have completely forgotten each other. They've been over each other for longer than they were ever together. It is such ancient history, it was added.

It might be too complicated now as well. Now you add six kids on his side and each of them having their own assorted battle scars into the mix? said the source.    .

Twitter exploded with reaction to Anistons break-up news on Thursday, with fans immediately shipping her back together with her ex-hubby.

Whats old is new? Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt split 13 years ago. And now for the first time the actors are both single. The couple arm in arm in 2004.

Interesting: The ink wast even dry on Anistons separation statement on Thursday and everyone was ready to set her up again.

Ledecka wins surprise Olympic super-G title; Vonn misses podium || SML News - Duration: 5:42.

Ledecka wins surprise Olympic super-G title; Vonn misses podium

. Ester Ledecka , The Canadian Press.

JEONGSEON, Korea, Republic Of — Ester Ledecka stepped out of her snowboard long enough to click into her skis and become an Olympic gold medallist.

Even the 22-year-old from the Czech Republic who dabbles in both realms cant quite believe it.

Ledecka made a stunning run from back in the pack to take the super-G title on Saturday at the Pyeongchang Games, with a mistake costing Lindsey Vonn a spot on the podium.

Til today, I thought I am a better snowboarder, Ledecka said.

The 26th racer to take the course, Ledecka shredded her way through it in a time of 1 minute, 21.11 seconds.

Defending champion Anna Veith of Austria earned the silver, finishing 001 seconds back, and Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein captured bronze.

Ledecka is far from finished at the Olympics.

She is trying to talk her coaches into letting her compete in the Olympic downhill on Wednesday, before she grabs her snowboard for Thursdays qualifying in the parallel giant slalom.

The final is Saturday.

I was probably the only snowboarder on site, Ledecka said.

All the other girls didnt risk a lot.

There must be a lot of pressure on them.

I was just trying to do my best run. Ledeckas run shocked even her.

Shortly after finishing and seeing her time, she asked, How did that happen? Wonderful question.

Even better may be this: Is she now a snowboarder or an Alpine skier? She won the parallel giant slalom at the world snowboard championships last March.

Thats so impressive, skier Michelle Gisin of Switzerland said.

Better stay with us and dont go snowboarding.

I know that she can take a lot of risks. Ever think this was possible? I thought this will come much later on in my career, Ledecka said.

But this is great, if it can happen like that. Turns out, Ledeckas first sport was hockey.

She then started skiing at the age of 4 before switching to freestyle snowboarding and eventually Alpine snowboarding and is now back to skis.

Throughout her snowboarding career, shes been skiing on her off days.

I am so surprised about all of it, Ledecka said.

Im really trying to win and do a good run every time, but I didnt really realize that this really can happen. The first racer out of the starting gate, Vonn had a fast run going before going too wide on a turn near the bottom.

She finished in a tie for sixth.

I thought it was either going to be really great or really bad, Vonn said.

And it didnt quite turn out the way Id hoped.

I didnt really have a choice in the matter so I did the best that I could.

Just made one mistake, and that cost me a medal. She dedicated these Olympics to her grandfather, Don Kildow, who died in November.

On Friday night, she said on her Twitter account: I will give it everything I have with no regrets.

This is for my Grandpa! Vonn will have another shot to medal in the downhill.

At age 33, she is trying to become the oldest woman to win an Olympic Alpine medal.

She won bronze in the super-G at the 2010 Vancouver Games — to go with her downhill gold — but missed the 2014 Sochi Olympics after surgery on her right knee.
