The Canadian Armed Forces
paid tribute to their 28th Commander-in-Chief,
His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,
during a military parade on September 27th.
The Governor General received military honours
including a 100-person guard of honour, a general salute,
a CF-18 flypast and 21-gun salute.
His Excellency inspected the guard of honour
and thanked the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces
for their remarkable service to their country.
One of the first questions I was asked was "Will you wear
a Canadian Armed Forces uniform on Remembrance Day?"
In fact, I felt I should not wear the uniform
on that first Remembrance Day of my mandate.
I felt it was an honour that must be earned,
just as all of you have earned it.
Several months later, in fact it was about five weeks later, Walt,
I was in Afghanistan with my great friend Walt Natynczyk,
then Chief of the Defence Staff.
We were in combat uniform, for Afghanistan, and he said to me
"The men and women of the Armed Forces would be proud
if you would wear the uniform anytime you are with us officially."
And from that point on, I've put on the uniform
and I've been so very proud to wear it.
I offer my sincere thanks and profound admiration
to every one of the members of the Canadian Armed Forces
for your sense of honour and duty
and for all that you do every day for Canada.
You have made Sharon and me very proud to wear this uniform.
We will always be grateful. Thank you.
Today, we look backwards and forward
with our magnificent troops on parade
with an opportunity for His Excellency to address
the Armed Forces in his last days as Governor General.
We invite him to do so knowing full well that we look back
on a period of outstanding service to Canada and to the Armed Forces
and look forward to his happy transition
to future duties and to welcome soon a new Governor General.
Tune in for the next episode when we cover the installation ceremony
of the new Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada.
October is Women's History Month,
and women have contributed to Canada's military history
for nearly as long as we have been a country.
The Canadian Armed Forces was one of the first military forces
to allow women to serve in all available occupations.
We've made amazing strides toward gender equality
and women's empowerment over the past 150 years
since Confederation.
But there is still more work to do.
I hope Defence Team members will join us in celebrating
the contributions of the women in defence and security.
We leave you with images from Operation RENAISSANCE IRMA -
the CAF's mission to support Hurricane Irma relief in the Caribbean.
In the Turks and Caicos region, HMCS St. John's crew
is on land removing debris and restoring power and water sources.
The ship's CH-124 Sea King helicopter and aircrew
are scouting the area and delivering water to locals.
Its dive team is assessing underwater damage.
RCAF aircraft are transporting equipment and humanitarian supplies,
evacuating affected people and service dogs,
and capturing imagery of affected areas to assess damage.
The CAF has also established
a liaison and reconnaissance team in Barbados.
Its role is to facilitate CAF support to partners in the region.
That's it for us, and thank you so much for watching.
See you next time…
