WWE News - Why The XFL Failed According To Jim Ross

On Thursday, WWE chairman Vince McMahon announced that the XFL will be returning in 2020, bringing back a league that ceased operations after a miserable first year in 2001.

17 years ago, the XFL was introduced as a league to provide NFL fans with entertainment during its lengthy offseason. NBC and WWF invested $100 million in the league, but lost a total of $35 in just one year.

That prompted NBC to back out of its broadcasting contract, which forced McMahon to give up on the league.

McMahon outlined a number of rules and business relations for the XFL. The league will have eight teams, though he wouldn't specify which markets are being targeted for possible destinations.

He also pledged that any player with a criminal record will be barred from entering the league.

Legendary WWE announcer Jim Ross appeared on Busted Open Radio to talk about what went wrong with the XFL in 2001, and how Vince can ensure there's more success this time around:.

"You've got to be very selective of your cities and how those cities and franchises are going to be managed and promoted…Stadium selection is important. The LA Chargers are playing in a soccer stadium and no one seems to care.

It will hold the costs down in that regards. There was no kickoffs. I like punts and kickoffs because there's a chance for a big play.

Another issue is where do you get good officials from? The NFL sure as hell doesn't have a monopoly on them, because you see what they're using."In the old XFL, punters were given 10-yard penalties for kicking the ball out of bounds.

And when teams scored touchdowns, they had to attempt the extra point from the two-yard line, instead of kicking it.The eight XFL teams to make up the 2001 season were based in Orlando, San Francisco, New York/New Jersey, Birmingham, Chicago, Los Angeles, Memphis and Las Vegas.

Vince told reporters during Thursday's announcement that "every city is on our radar." JR also said that Vince told him he believed "in the concept" of the XFL despite its failed first tenure.

"I know that was a challenge that went unfulfilled, didn't succeed at it, and maybe there's something to be said about his competitive nature. I can tell you that he sees something that is different than the last go-round," JR said.

Vince McMahon is hoping to have learned from his mistakes in the second go-around. He did pledge that he'll find the suitable medical experts, head coaches and players to help run the league.

We'll see if the XFL has a successful revival in two years.

She has made a handful of sporadic appearances since. Surprisingly, Molly Holly was not present at the Raw 25th Anniversary show this past Monday when WWE brought out a number of past female superstars.

5 DANIEL BRYAN RETURNS TO THE RING: Daniel Bryan's status as an active performer has been a huge topic of conversation over the past few years, and all signs from WWE's side point to him not returning.

But he's been cleared by non-WWE doctors, and it's about time WWE finally uses that.

It would be stupid to put Bryan in a match with someone like Braun Strowman or Brock Lesnar, but if he can work with someone safe, a return at the Rumble leading into a huge match at 'Mania is just perfect.

The obvious candidate here is The Miz, who is rumored to have a huge match at the biggest show of the year, as their personal rivalry would no doubt steal the show.

But either way, it would be great to see Bryan enter the Royal Rumble once more.

4 KHARMA RETURNS: Kharma, or Awesome/Amazing Kong as she was known outside of WWE, is one of the best female performers in wrestling over the last decade.

She made history by becoming just the third female to ever appear in a Royal Rumble, so why not bring her back to compete in the first ever Women's Royal Rumble? She's just hit 40, so it's very unlikely that she'd ever have another long run left in her, but for one match and one moment, this would be incredible.

The obvious battle we'd love to see in a return is Nia Jax vs. Kharma, but we'd love to see her interact with all WWE's current performers, and this needs to happen.

3 ASUKA MAKES HISTORY: It's a bit easier to predict the winner of the men's Royal Rumble match, but this is the first ever match for the women.

Everyone from Ronda Rousey to Becky Lynch has been touted as a potential winner, but Asuka makes the most sense to us.

It's a very obvious choice in some senses, but WWE are always unpredictable (not always in the good way), but we are sticking with The Empress of Tomorrow as our top pick.

It's tough to predict who she'll match up against at the biggest show of the year because Alexa Bliss clearly isn't the answer, but they can work on that later.

Nakamura is my choice to win the Royal Rumble, and a traditional stare down with AJ Styles to send the show off air would just be a perfect way to end the PPV event.

Legendary WWE announcer and Hall of Famer Jerry 'The King' Lawler has only been seen on company programming sporadically through the past year.

WWE has been going with younger and fresher voices, with Michael Cole, Booker T and Corey Graves working as the Raw announce team. Lawler and long-time announcer companion Jim Ross appeared at the Raw 25th Anniversary show this past Monday.

Though some fans may believe that was a one-off, Lawler actually announced on his Dinner With the King podcast that he has signed a one-year contract with the WWE.

The King will also be broadcasting at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view this Sunday, with Stephanie McMahon also confirming herself as a special guest announcer for the event.

It's worth adding that Jim Ross confirmed last year that he signed a two-year contract with WWE, suggesting we could see more broadcasts involving him and Lawler in the future.In 2016, Lawler and girlfriend Lauryn McBride were arrested after both accused the other of committing domestic abuse.

All charges were dropped, and Lawler was moved to be a pre-show analyst for SmackDown Live and Monday Night Raw. 2016, he and Lita were taken off of pre-shows, and the former has mainly been used for special event broadcasts.

In the '90s, Ross and Lawler became the iconic voices of the WWF.

Reigns is scheduled for a program with Brock Lesnar and he immediately moves to the top of the list in terms of favorites to win the battle royal. If he does, expect the crowd not to be too pleased. The WWE could try to find an interesting way to not have Reigns win the match but get him the title shot against Lesnar between the Rumble and WrestleMania.
