The memorial of The Forgotten Bombardment
Let's see, where to start..
In 1943 there was another bombing in Rotterdam, called the forgotten bombardment
This year it's been 75 years ago
Derek wrote a poem as a memorial for it
And now we're going to...
..the poem is inspired about a florist who died during the bombardment
and the sun in law of this florist is in the organisation of the memorial.
Derek met up with him, right Derek?
Yes true, that's the sun in law of the florist that died during the bombardment
and I wanted to make something big as a bombardment, very small
I heard about the florist story last year for the first time
and it touched me very much
and I thought if I'm going to write a poem about the bombardement I want to take the florist as inspiration
And once I've written the poem..
..the idea came to let it be visible on a flat next to the memorial park
That's coincidently the same flat where my grandparents have lived and where my mother is born
so that makes it extra personal
and then you came with the idea, because it's about the florist..
to do something with colors and flowers, of that particular florist, in the design of the poem
I think thats really cool and gives it a 3rd dimension
so now were driving to the sun in law: Jan. To go trough old pictures and see if we can find original fonts of the florist.
Right? I hope so!
Let's hope Jan has an archive or photo albums of his father in law
maybe we can find original typography, or colors, or graphic elements
and Jan probably has a lot of stories as well
so, let's take a look! Yes!

Well, I'm Jan and this is Diny
Do you know if your father had favourite flowers?
Yes, it were big pink flowers. They also came in blue, but mostly pink.
I can't think of the name right now
My father had everything off course
Yes those pink ones my father always use to have!
that's what my mother use to tell me
Well, we know we should do something with the color pink than!
I just can't remember the name right now
It are very beautiful, big flowers, they are everywhere. Pink and blue
This one actually came out the debris
This is Jan van Ettekoven, her father. This picture is found in the debris after the bombing, you see.
During the fire. Unbelievable.
This is a picture of a greenhouse. It could be his own, or it could be at a client.
It's all very vulnerable, it breaks into pieces very easily.
This is his mourning card
Here by I would like to inform you that the garden is finished thus far..
..that you can start working in it
so someone else did the preperation work and now he could start finishing it off with flowers.
There was lot's of inspiration at Jan and Diny's. Very beautiful handwritings and great graphic design
but in the end we only found one inspiration source that actually came from the business of Jan van Ettekoven
and that's a receipt
his name is printed on there and we can use that letterstyle
and I also want to integrate the graphical elements in the design
a few days later
I finished all the designs of the poem, let me show you
This is the original receipt from Jan
This is the font we found and used for the flat
Jan's favourite flowers are hydrangeas, In different shades of pink and blue
Those colors in combination with the color green of the leaves will be the color pallette used for the painting
but also for the postcard, that you see here.
The layout of the receipt, for example the vertical text and the stripes
are also being used here
The front of the postcard are all the letters of the poem melted in to one image, with the title of the poem on top of that.
The memorial tablet has the same layout, but no pink. Everything is engraved in to the brass metal
This is the monument that is already in Park 1943, we have used that as inspiration for the pedestal
The shape of the pedestal comes from the monument
The metal as well, so over time it will rust and this gives a beautiful contrast with the brass memorial tablet
That's the whole package. I can't wait to start painting!
We arrived at the street De Gijsinglaan, this is the tower we're going to paint.
We had a sign placed, keep these two parking spots free, well there's a car just being parked here
The lifting platform is parked around the corner
At 8 am there was supposed to be someone here to explain the lifting platform to me
It's now 9 o clock and there is still no one here
I called to police, but they don't want to tow away the car because they say who was there first; the sign or the car?
They called the owner of the car, she lives in this building but doesn't answer. And I'm not aloud to have her number cause of the privacy law.
so...that's a great start!
Hahaha, yes, here we are.
Jerry, what just happened?
A lot of things! A lot of complication, a lot of problems... BUT
but we got the lifting platform on it's spot, hallelujah.
The car wasn't aloud to be towed away, but they finally got a hold on to the owner and she moved her car.
After 20 trials, the machine is on the right place
and now we're finally gonna rock!
Let's go and unpack the car! Let's go to the top!
What time is it now? Uh no idea.
I think 11 o clock. Ok 3 hours delay, great!
Hahaha 3 hours delay, yes great.
We're now 40 meters high above Rotterdam. In a shaking basket

but the wind is starting to blow stronger. The fun is actually a bit gone now
So it's becoming a race against time right now, because tomorrow is gonna rain all day and..
..painting in the rain is not gonna work
Saturday is the ceremony, so we gotta work hard now. No time to film.

..or last panel..
..the last panel of the poem. We also need to paint his signature below
We can hardly see anything, so we need to do that tomorrow morning
but it's going to rain, so it's going to be tricky
But it was a great day. We really did a lot

But that's all an illusion. It's going to rain in about 3 hours
So we have to finish those bottom two panels and paint Derek's signature.
It will have 1 hour to dry and then it can go rain all week.

Great news, I just picked up the memorial tablet. Really happy how everything looks.
The engraving is very deep

The index finger also came out very cool.
All the details are very visible, so.. ..I'm real happy!

It's made entirely out of metal. We're now on our way to Park 1943 to place the memorial tablet.

March 31st, 2018 The memorial of The Forgotten Bombardment
Good afternoon everyone.
My poem is titled: To Wilt Never and it's dedicated to Jan van Ettekoven
A moment is already over before it even starts
Light as a feather, such a seed of time carried by the wind
It blows to mind or heart, just like that until it sees soil there
Where that smile or tear then lands and shoots roots for life
to flourish often latent until flowers are spoken of
In sentences on towards tomorrow embraced by a new piece of land
This is how they stay alive colors of forever knowing
What we give words will simply not be forgotten
Almost to late for the revealing of the memorial tablet, cause of a toilet break.
..with Jan Polet and his wife Diny, the forces behind a lot of things that happen here in and around the park.
I'm quickly looking around, as you might notice, I'm trying to find the designer..
YES! Hahaha
Shon can tell you everything about the story and metaphor of Jan van Ettekoven has continued into the design
The poem was very personal this year, because it is inspired by the florist
He approached me for the design, so I thought it would be a good thing to let the designs also be inspired by the gardener Jan van Ettekoven.
This is the only piece of graphic design we know for sure he has used
This has inspired me for the wall painting and the memorial tablet..
..for the lettering and graphic elements. Actually everything that's being used in the designs originates from this.
Let's give it up for him
Everybody received the postcard with the the poem by Derek. That's also a design by Shon.
Very special; a poet from Rotterdam and a designer from Amsterdam, so it's a beautiful day today. Hahaha
I would like to ask mayor Aboutaleb and two students to reveal the memorial tablet.
The words from Rotterdam and the deeds from Amsterdam?! Sometimes, sometimes.. hahaha
I listen very sharp to this kind of ... But he's going to move to Rotterdam!
