Creativity is an innate impulse to everyone on the planet.
it may express itself in different ways depending on your talents and your training
but the basic ability to be creative is a fundamental human skill
and anyone can learn how to access it.
The first rule is a willingness to try something new
After all, as someone wise once said if you always do what you've always done
you'll always get what you've always got
Innovation and creativity are very closely intertwined
and it's nearly impossible to come up with truly innovative thoughts
if you surround yourself with the same ways of seeing and being and doing.
Now I'm not talking about giving up the day job and sitting down to write that novel
That's not playful - that's terrifying! The trick is taking micro movements
in the direction of a more creative life.
so I'm going to give you a really simple experiment to try. It's good for your brain, your body and your imagination
It won't take long and you can do it wherever you are in the world
today if you're up for it.
You can create the conditions for a breakthrough in your imagination
simply by going for a walk
but a different kind of walk than the walk you would normally take.
Here is your creative challenge.
Whenever you are next due to take a short break from work, do something other than make a cuppa and
check your social media feeds. Instead set a timer on your phone for
twenty-five minutes. Turn your phone to airplane mode
Step outside wherever you are and take a left, then another left and then a right
doesn't matter where this takes you just follow
a brand new pattern of walking the streets around wherever it is that you work
left, left right. See where it takes you.
And while you're walking, walk slowly!
Don't look at your phone and don't look at the ground
Look up! See if you can notice details you've never thought to look at before
Look out for colours that please you, music that comes from a passing car
or a shop with its door open. See what patterns you can spot
in the pavement, see the designs all around you and the sounds and the colours and the
conversations that you overhear.
When your timer goes off head back to your desk
and write it all down in fragments like a poem or a song lyric or a word painting
Just try it and see if it shifts how you see your world.
