Waching daily Apr 30 2018

The preparations for the historic inter-Korean event kept President Moon busier than ever,

but his work has only just begun.

From the Washington-Pyongyang meeting to the G7 Summit and the second round of inter-Korean

talks,... there is to be no rest ahead for him and key regional players.

We turn to our Park Hee-jun for a look ahead at the hectic schedule.

Friday's inter-Korean summit was only the beginning of the diplomatic process of securing

peace on the Korean Peninsula.

President Moon now has a series of summits coming up with various parties involved in

affairs related to the Korean Peninsula -- lasting through the end of the year.

First off, in the beginning of May,... the leaders of South Korea, China, and Japan will

hold a three-way summit in Tokyo.

President Moon is expected to share the results of the inter-Korean talks,... and ask for

the two nations' support in efforts for peace.

That will be followed by a meeting between South Korea and the United States,... mostly

to discuss ways to ensure the success of President Trump's summit with Kim Jong-un.

It seems now the Trump-Kim summit will happen sooner than expected, in late May, after Trump

said last weekend that he'll be meeting with Kim in three to four weeks.

Chinese media have also been reporting that President Xi Jinping will visit Pyongyang

after the Trump-Kim talks,... but it's still unclear whether that will really happen.

The month of June will see a meeting between the leaders of South Korea and Russia.

That will be followed by the G7 meeting on June 8th and 9th in Canada,... where Trump

is expected to take the lead in international efforts to disarm North Korea.

President Moon is also pushing for multi-lateral talks sometime in June with the two Koreas,

the U.S., and possibly China -- to ensure the success of the North Korea-U.S. summit.

Then after the annual UN General Assembly meets in September,... there will be a second

inter-Korean summit.

The two Koreas agreed last week that President Moon would visit Pyongyang sometime this fall.

And sometime before the year comes to a close, three-party talks or four-party talks with

China will need to be held... to formally end a war that's lasted seven decades.

President Moon Jae-in talked to the three sailors released by pirates near the West

African coast.

During the phone conversation, he also commended the captain of Munmu the Great for his and

the crew's rescue efforts, and thanked the Navy on behalf of the Korean people.

The liberal leader talked to each of the three abducted Koreans, thanking them for their

patience and trust in the government.

The three sailors had been kept captive by unidentified pirates for 32 days before being

rescued last Friday.

Government lays out plans to expand Korean culture globally by 2022 - Duration: 2:20.

K-Pop and K-dramas have played a pivotal role in spreading Korean culture across the world

since the 1990s.

However, studies have found that Seoul's soft-power is waning as of late.

To tackle the problem, the country's cultural experts gathered to formulate plans to help

spread Hallyu to new regions.

Won Jung-hwan has the highlights from that meeting.

Since the 1990s, the Korean Wave has spread Korean culture around the world, improving

the country's global image.

But according to recent research by Southern California University,...

South Korea's soft power was ranked 21st out of 30 countries last year, raising concerns

that Korean culture is losing its competitiveness.

So to tackle the issue… the Korean Culture and Information Service is injecting nearly

10 million U.S. dollars from 2018 to 2022 to further promote Korea's brand around the

world.

It presented its project to experts and government organizations on Monday.

"Working together with cultural institutions that are located overseas,… our major projects

will set up tailored advancement strategies for each region by analyzing people's reactions

to Korean culture across more than 10 countries."

The meeting highlighted a lack of systematic support from the government,… with cultural

exchanges concentrated in East and Southeast Asia, largely ignoring other regions.

So as part of a broader plan to expand the reach of the Korean wave,… the Korean Culture

and Information Service is laying the groundwork for increased cultural exchanges by creating

Korean cultural centers in other regions such as Russia.

The government says it will build a "house of Korean culture and arts" in Moscow for

ethnic Korean residents to introduce Korean culture to Russians during the 2018 World

Cup.

"Cultural events such as K-pop concerts, art performances, and exhibitions are planned

during the upcoming international mega sporting event in Russia."

The ministry of culture hopes that the five-year plan to further spread Korean culture around

the globe will help boost the country's soft power competitiveness.

Summit menu prompts interest in N. Korean cold noodles - Duration: 2:26.

Nangmyeon is one of the things that almost automatically comes to mind for most South

Koreans when asked about something uniquely North Korean.

Naturally, the buckwheat noodle in cold broth was on the official menu at last week's inter-Korean

summit.

It wasn't surprising to see more people in Seoul going out to have some Nangmyeon themselves,

after witnessing the historic event.

For more on the significance of this signature cuisine, we turn to our Kan Hyeong-woo.

Some are calling it "noodle diplomacy" in reference to the Pyongyang Naengmyeon, or

cold noodles, served for dinner at the 2018 inter-Korean summit.

That dish was suggested for the official banquet by South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed and brought noodles made in the North Korean capital,

Pyongyang.

Kim's comments on the menu added some levity.

"Hopefully, President Moon can enjoy this Pyongyang Naengmyeon that's come from so far

away.

Ah, actually I can't say it's that far."

Kim Jong-un wasn't kidding; Pyeongyang is only about 170 kilometers from the summit

venue.

"After Pyongyang Naengmyeon, or 'cold noodles', was served at the inter-Korean summit last

Friday, many South Koreans have gone out to get a taste of what it's all about."

It's lunchtime, and a little warm to stand outside for too long -- but the line at this

Pyeongyang Naengmyeon restaurant keeps getting longer.

"I heard more people have been coming to this place since the inter-Korean summit.

I've been waiting here for 30 minutes already."

And for those who've already tried the South Korean version, it seems there's some excitement

for the idea of actually trying Naengmyeon in Pyongyang.

"People are more interested in Pyongyang Naengmyeon now after the inter-Korean summit.

So I came here today to give it a try.

If a visit to Pyongyang becomes possible, I would like to go there to enjoy the original

dish."

"If peace can be maintained and unification is realized, I definitely would want to go

to Pyongyang and have at least two bowls of Pyongyang Naengmyeon."

As we inch towards peace on the Korean Peninsula, Pyongyang Naengmyeon could one day become

a small but symbolic link between the two separated Koreas.

Hot with high levels of ultrafine dust _ 043018 - Duration: 1:45.

Hello, I'm Michelle Park here with the latest weather update.

We had mild weather today but the air was filled with ultrafine dust at around two times

the normal range.

The dust is slowly thinning-out in the south, but Seoul and the surrounding regions will

still be bad through the evening.

Luckily we have rain coming tomorrow across the southern parts of Korea, and also in Beijing,

which will hopefully freshen up the air.

The southern provinces will mostly see less than 5 millimeters of rain tomorrow, except

for the coastal areas which can expect up to 30 millimeters.

The whole country will begin the morning under gray skies,... with Seoul starting off at

16 degrees Celsius, Daegu and Gyeongju at 14 and 12 degrees.

Into the afternoon, Seoul will rise up to 25 degrees, Gwangju 23 and Busan peaking at

20 degrees.

On Wednesday, the rain will spread nationwide, lasting until Thursday morning.

Afterward, until the extended holiday on Monday, we should be able to enjoy favorable weather.

I'll leave you with the weather conditions around the world.
