You didn't wash the dishes yesterday!
the fu*k?
Hey guys, what's up?
My name is Richard Grunhauser and I'm here with Nicolas Ferreira
today we're going to talk about Fencing!
Fencing has been part of the Olympic Games since the first edition of the Modern Olympics
in 1896 in Athens.
But how was the sport created?
There are European reports about from the 16th century
which shows the existence of the sport
because before that, fencing… was a way of solving problems.
You probably have seen or heard about the duels
With the appearance of the gunpowder, fencing kind of lost its purpose to "solve problems"
And from then, fencing started to get "domesticated" and the sport was created!
Fencing is divided in three weapons:
saber
foil
And epee
Don't forget that epee is definitely the best one of them.
Saber's touching zone is from the waist above and
you can hit the opponent with slash or thrust.
And it's the only one that you can hit with a slash.
You guys probably have watched this kind of hit…
in the Star Wars movie for example!
Haha, Got you!!
Foil has a different target zone.
It's from the waist above
but it doesn't include the arms or mask.
And differently from saber, you can only hit the opponent with a thrust.
So, if you hit with a slash, nothing happens.
The tip of the foil needs a 500g pressure to make it a valid point.
Epee, clearly the best weapon
it's the only weapon that has the target zone the entire body.
From your toe to your head.
You can hit the hand, you can hit the back,
you can hit the leg, any part will be a valid point.
And just like foil, it can only be used with a thrust.
If you hit with a slash, nothing happens, you must use the tip.
Remember that different from foil,
the epee needs a pressure of 750g on the tip to make it a valid point.
A lot of people ask us "what is that rope that looks
like it's pulling the athlete while fencing?"
Have you guys noticed that?
In foil and epee, that the touch is only valid with the thrust,
it works like a light switch.
When you press the light switch, the light goes on.
Oh really?
In fencing isn't different.
You press the tip, there is a wire inside the blade,
that is connected to an outlet in the end,
at this part we call guard.
We also have a body cord, that goes inside the clothes.
And this wire connects to another wire, that is called the reel,
which is the rope that keeps pulling us while fencing.
But it doesn't actually pull us,
because the traction of the rope is almost zero.
We basically don't even feel that there is a rope
attached to us, it feels like there's nothing.
The only reason why it's "pulling" us, is so
we don't trip in case we are going backwards.
Because this cord is connected to the score box
and whenever there's a hit,
the light will go on in the box,
showing a valid point or not, for you or your opponent.
To start the bout, the athletes get on the strip
and positioned themselves in the en garde line.
**EN GARDE LINE** As soon as the fencers are positioned,
the ref will give the command to start the bout.
Whenever the bout starts, there is a timer running
until someone hits.
The points in fencing are called "touche".
And fencing is divided in two stages in a competition:
the pools round, which is similar to a group stage in a FIFA World Cup for example.
It goes up to 5 touches or 3 minutes.
And the Direct Elimination rounds,
which goes up to 15 touches or 3 periods of 3 minutes,
with 1-minute break in between.
This 1-minute break is really important, because it's that moment
when the athlete can rest, hydrate himself
during a really intense bout
And get tips from his coach,
who's there watching the bout in the end of the strip.
that's the moment that you can also rethink your strategy
change it, if you're losing,
or keep it up, if you're winning, touching a lot.
Epee is the only weapon
that there is no touch convention.
Explaining this a little better,
basically in epee, if you hit it's your point
and end of story.
If both athletes touch at the same time,
both athletes get the point
and there is no discussion or referee's decision.
On the other hand, in foil and saber,
there is this convention,
which is the athlete needs to make the right move
or an attack to get the point.
And if both lights go on, from both athletes, because they hit at the same time,
the referee will decide who gets the point, by judging who
made the attack or who made the defense in the right way.
Which means there's no double touche like there is in epee, the best weapon
**Despite both lights went on, the athlete on the left got the point because he made the attack while the athlete from the right was not able to defend**
Fencing is a really technological sport.
In competitions we have the video referee.
Specially in the convention weapons (foil and saber)
when you disagree with the ref's decision, you have the right to call for a video challenge
and the athletes usually make it this way.
So the ref can check the action in slow motion,
to check if you actually started the attack
or if you defended
And this way enables fairer bout.
So, guys, this was a brief explanation
of how does fencing work and some basic rules.
If you are more interested on learning and practicing fencing
we will leave on the video's bio, a link to the Brazilian Fencing Federation website
which you will have access to every place where you can start practicing fencing in Brazil.

That's it guys, I hope you enjoyed the video!
