In the chilling story of in Anneliese Michel, several questions are asked was this women really possessed
By several demons or did she just suffer from severe mental
Illness, I mean for as long as I can remember the debate between
religion and science and whether or not they go hand in hand
You know it's been argued for a long time now is it possible that we can come to some sort of crossroads
here and see where the to actually
intermingle a hundred percent and that's a question I want each of you to keep in mind as we explore this chilling story of The
Exorcism of Anneliese Mitchell
Welcome back to another episode of FTD news in history my name is Leroy Kenton so let's begin
In September 1968, when Annalise was 16 years old she
Experienced her first episode of losing consciousness and later that night she felt as if something
Was pressing down on her chest pinning her to her bed born Anna Elizabeth Mitchell
Known as Annalise Mitchell she came into the world a healthy baby girl on September 21st
1952 she was the first of four daughters to the parents Joseph and Anna Mitchell she grew up in a very strict and devout
Catholic household in Bavaria West Germany where she attended
Masses twice a week at the age of sixteen Anneliese had experienced a blackout
While at school and she began walking around very dazed now analyse herself
Did not remember this incident at all but her friends and family were saying that yeah it
Was like she was in a trance after this incident the doctors told her parents that Anna Lee suffered from temporal
lobe epilepsy which would cause changes in mood
Hallucinations as well as a loss of awareness and other side effects now one year later
after this Annelise experienced another similar occurrence this time she woke up in a trance
And she wet her bed also her body, was experiencing a lot of convulsions it
Was just shaking uncontrollably?
She couldn't stop it at all no after this of course her family tried putting her on different
Medications but the medical treatments weren't really helping
well they appeared to help for a little time but shortly after her conditions continue to just
Deteriorate although Anneliese, did continue to take her medication she began to believe that she was possessed by demons
Annalee said that she began to hear voices
Saying that she was damned to hell during this time she did things like eat insects she also developed a hatred for
religious objects she began to self-harm
she even drank her urine on several
Occasions and at one point she even bit off the head of a dead bird in one instance Anneliese crawl under a table and began
barking like a dog for two days tearing off her clothes
Urinating on the floor those became regular occurrences
also so as you could imagine growing up in a religious household you know her family and friends and people that she
associated with began to really believe her that okay maybe this is beyond the medical world maybe we're in the
supernatural
demonic possession
world now so they started believing her now as time went on she just
Refused to eat any sort of food she said that the demons wouldn't let her
Eat but later she did say that okay now she's doing it on purpose. She's not eating
She's not really drinking anything it seemed like she just wanted everything to be over with it's also reported that Annalise
intended to atone for the sins of other people and in her dying should be like a
Sacrifice, where God's judgment wouldn't fall on other sinners so in her efforts are not eat that
Was in effect contributing to her passing away as a sacrifice
She would later claim to have walked alongside the Virgin Mary that day
Annelise reported that she had told her that it pains my heart that so many souls are going to hell
someone, needs to do penance would you like to do penance for the sauce so that they do not enter hell
Annelise said that she was given three days to consider the Virgin Mary's offer
An Elise was more willing than ever to become a vessel for all of mankind's sins and make a martyr of herself
her parents requested priests to come and perform
exorcisms on several occasions finally they were successful and Annalise went through 67 rites of exorcism which left her very
dehydrated and malnourished
and these rites were conducted over a ten-month period with about one or two sessions per week
often she was seen collapsing on her knees as a symbol of prayer only to get up and drop on her knees again
repeatedly and I mean hundreds of times doing this
Shattering her
Knee bones but still the parents trusted in the church they trusted in the exorcism process and didn't seek any medical help during her final
Exorcism Anna Lisa's parents they literally had to carry her through the motions because she only weighed
68 pounds and she was too weak to move her own body sadly and Elise passed away on July 1st
1976 at the age of 23 she died of severe dehydration and malnutrition
Along with a high fever as well as pneumonia her final
Words before she passed to the Exorcist were beg for absolution and she also said to her mother
Mother I'm afraid after Anna Lisa's unfortunate passing the priests as well as her parents came under a lot of criticism
And critics were saying that even if her parents
Force-fed her just a week before her passing should have had enough energy to continue to live on but there is saying
Well she was refusing to eat so how could we even
Force-feed her in the first place
this case ended up going to trial and in their defense the priest had played several parts of the tapes during Anna Lisa's
exorcisms
Proving that she was possessed saying that okay here we can hear
Demons arguing so yeah this is a sign that she was actually possessed and this was beyond some sort of epileptic
seizure but the experts pointed out that the priests may have
accidentally introduced and reinforced the types of psychotic behavior
Required to be possessed and in doing so they enabled
to suffer even more
But both the priests continue to say that no she was actually possessed
by several demons they play the tapes and they said that the demons identified themselves as Lucifer Cain Judas Iscariot
Hitler as well as Nero and others
And
They, also claimed that she was fully freed of demonic possession before she passed in the end Annalise's to parents and the two priests were
found guilty of negligent homicide and they were sentenced to six months in prison
now although this prison sentence was later waived the Mitchells ended up paying the costs of the three-week trial
while the priests only faced some minor fines
Throughout her short life on this planet in least Mitchell had sought to pay for the sins of others to be right with God
Growing up she became a very
obedient daughter and
Lisas mother Anna has said this I know that we did the right thing because
I saw the sign of Christ in her hands she was bearing stigmata and that was a sign from God that we should
Exorcise the demons she died to save other lost souls to atone for their sins
Annelise was buried on the outer edge of local cemetery and she was buried right beside her
Half-sister Martha
However she didn't stay buried long because there was a nun from southern Bavaria that had a vision of her
body
Being intact in the grave and in 1978 after hearing from the nun Anna Lisa's family
decided to go dig up the body dig up the grave and they replaced her body in a lined oak coffin
Instead but from all the reports that came out of this endless his body
Was said to have decayed just like any other person yet this hasn't stopped a lot of pilgrim from visiting her
grave site on a regular basis many people even consider her to be an
unofficial Saint because of her ability to save lost souls
Through her suffering now many years after The Exorcism of Anneliese Mitchell and her passing her story
Continues to live on and take on several different incarnations
including the film The Exorcism of Emily Rose in
2005 and also Requiem as well as at least the Exorcist tapes so what's this story really a case of demonic possession
or
was the parents and the priests just completely in equipped to deal with somebody suffering from a mental condition or maybe
Annalise was suffering from both I remember
even I had my own experiences there was a
several years ago at my place of bunch of friends were over and one of the young men there started just
going on the floor like a snake he was roaring like a lion
And it took several of us to hold him down and a lot of his language
Was speaking in the third person like saying he's mine he's mine?
his pupils were really dilated and it was it was pretty freaking I'm not gonna lie and
Um they said that okay this was demonic possession and I remember just seeing this and I'm like
Wow, like I've never experienced anything like that before definitely the experience that I'll never forget
