In Break With Tradition, Royal Family Embraces Meghan Markle At Holiday Festivities

Actress Meghan Markle and her fiancé Prince Harry wowed the crowds outside the royal family's Christmas church service at Queen Elizabeth II's Norfolk country estate north of London on Monday.

It was the first time the royals have included someone not yet part of the family in their holiday traditions, according to the BBC.

The couple walked with other family members to the service before returning to Sandringham House for the traditional turkey lunch. They then watched the queen deliver her televised Christmas message.

The queen said in her address that she was looking forward to "welcome new members" into the family next year — likely referring to Markle's marriage to Harry in May and a new baby Prince William and Kate Middleton are expecting in April.

An engagement photo of Markle and Harry was spotted with other family pictures near the queen as she spoke.  The queen honored the victims of the 2017 terror attacks in Britain, and others affected by them, in her speech.

Earlier, Markle, 36, joined the queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, William, Kate, and other members of the royal family at St.

Mary Magdalene Chapel.  GettyHannah Mckay Meghan Markle walks alongside the Duchess of Cambridge as Prince Philip gestures to the crowd.

Hundreds of people gathered outside, some lining up well before dawn, to catch a glimpse of the royals.

They applauded Markle and Harry, who announced their engagement last month. Markle executed her first public curtsy — along with her future sister-in-law — as the 91-year-old queen left the service.

Markle appeared at ease with the royals, chatting to William and Charles, and walked arm-in-arm with Harry, 33.

After the service ended the couple greeted members of the crowd.

One Twitter user noted that Markle is bound to fit in with the royals because she clearly has an eye for the "futuristic church lady hat the Brits are so into." Multiple People Killed In Blast Near Intelligence Agency In Kabul

25, 2017.

KABUL (Reuters) - Islamic State claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on a compound of Afghanistan's national intelligence agency in Kabul on Monday, that killed at least five people and wounded two.

The blast comes a week after the group claimed an attack on a training facility of the same agency, the National Directorate for Security, in Kabul that ended when the attackers were killed before causing significant casualties.

In a statement issued through the group's Amaq news agency, Islamic State said it was also behind Monday's attack.

In Kabul, security officials said the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber who approached the agency's entrance on foot before blowing himself up.

All the casualties reported were of civilian passersby.

Najib Danish, a spokesman for the interior ministry, said at least five people had been killed and two wounded.

Islamic State's local affiliate, which first appeared in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan in early 2015, has become increasingly active and has claimed several recent suicide attacks in Kabul.

It has frequently fought Taliban militants and has been heavily targeted by U.S.

air strikes and Special Forces operations in its main stronghold in Nangarhar province.

But there remains considerable uncertainty about how the group operates and the exact nature of its connections with Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Pope Francis Uses Christmas Message To Call For Two-State Solution

6k   68.

VATICAN CITY, Dec 25 (Reuters) - Pope Francis used his Christmas message on Monday to call for a negotiated two-state solution to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, after U.S.

President Donald Trump stoked regional tensions with his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Francis spoke of the Middle East conflict and other world flashpoints in his "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) address, four days after more than 120 countries backed a U.N.

resolution urging the United States to reverse its decision on Jerusalem.

"Let us pray that the will to resume dialog may prevail between the parties and that a negotiated solution can finally be reached, one that would allow the peaceful coexistence of two states within mutually agreed and internationally recognized borders," he said, referring to the Israelis and Palestinians.

"We see Jesus in the children of the Middle East who continue to suffer because of growing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians," he said in his address, delivered from the balcony of St.

Peter's Basilica to tens of thousands of people.

Alessandro Bianchi / Reuters Pope Francis waves as he leads the Urbi et Orbi (to the city and the world) message from the balcony overlooking St.

Peters Square at the Vatican on December 25, 2017.

It was the second time that the pope has spoken out publicly about Jerusalem since Trump's decision on Dec.

On that day, Francis called for the city's "status quo" to be respected, lest new tensions in the Middle East further inflame world conflicts.

Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future independent state, whereas Israel has declared the whole city to be its "united and eternal" capital.

Francis, leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, urged people to see the defenseless baby Jesus in the children who suffer the most from war, migration and natural calamities caused by man today.

"Today, as the winds of war are blowing in our world.

Christmas invites us to focus on the sign of the child and to recognize him in the faces of little children, especially those for whom, like Jesus, 'there is no place in the inn,'" he said.

Mussa Qawasma / Reuters Clergymen attend a Christmas midnight mass at the Church of the Nativity in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on December 25, 2017.

OPEN HEARTS FOR REFUGEES Francis, celebrating the fifth Christmas of his pontificate, said he had seen Jesus in the children he met during his recent trip to Myanmar and Bangladesh, and he called for adequate protection of the dignity of minority groups in that region.

More than 600,000 Muslim Rohingya people have fled mainly Buddhist Myanmar to Bangladesh in recent months.

The pope had to tread a delicate diplomatic line during his visit, avoiding the word "Rohingya" while in Myanmar, which does not recognize them as a minority group, though he used the term when in Bangladesh.

"Jesus knows well the pain of not being welcomed and how hard it is not to have a place to lay one's head.

May our hearts not be closed as they were in the homes of Bethlehem," he said.

He also urged the world to see Jesus in the innocent children suffering from wars in Syria and Iraq and also in Yemen, complaining that its people had been "largely forgotten, with serious humanitarian implications for its people, who suffer from hunger and the spread of diseases." He also listed conflicts affecting children in South Sudan, Somalia, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Ukraine and Venezuela.

At his Christmas Eve Mass in St.

Peter's Basilica on Sunday, Francis strongly defended immigrants, comparing them to Mary and Joseph finding no place to stay in Bethlehem and saying faith demands that foreigners be welcomed.

Pop Star Lorde Drops Planned Israeli Concert After Criticism

720   26.

Grammy-award winner Lorde has canceled a planned concert in Israel following backlash over the Israeli government's treatment of Palestinians.

The concert was scheduled for June, but pro-Palestinian activists reached out to the 21-year-old New Zealand pop star to complain, and urged her to join a growing boycott movement against Israel.

Two activists from New Zealand, one Palestinian and one Jewish, wrote an open letter to Lorde decrying the treatment of Palestinians.

They noted that it's a particularly difficult time for Palestinians now "after the Trump administration's decision to move" the U.S.

embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in an apparent bid to shut down debate about who has rights to the city.

"A performance in Israel sends the wrong message," writer Justine Sachs and teacher Nadia Abu-Shanab wrote in the letter.

"Playing in Tel Aviv will be seen as giving support to the policies of the Israeli government, even if you make no comment on the political situation."  The pleas were effective with Lorde.

"Hey guys, so about this Israel show," she said in a statement reported by The Jerusalem Post.

"I've received an overwhelming number of messages and letters.

and I think the right decision at this time is to cancel the show.

I'm not too proud to admit I didn't make the right call on this one.

I'm truly sorry to reverse my commitment to come play for you.

I hope one day we can all dance." Here is @Lordes statement on the cancellation of her Tel Aviv show, via Israeli PR for the concert.

pic.twitter.com/Ph0uGHRjCV — Amy Spiro (@AmySpiro) December 24, 2017 Concert organizer Eran Arielli apologized on Facebook to fans: "The truth is that I was naive to think that an artist of her age can withstand the pressure involved in coming to Israel." Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev urged Lorde to reconsider.

"Lorde, I expect you to be a 'pure heroine' like the title of your first album — a pure heroine of culture, void of any foreign political considerations, not to mention delusional ones," she said.

The New Zealand Jewish Council issued a statement saying Lorde "succumbed" to "extremist bullies." A boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel was founded in 2005 and a number of musicians are supporting the boycott. Singers Lauryn Hill, Elvis Costello, Gil Scott-Heron and Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters have all refused to perform in the nation. Last month, German networks announced they would no longer broadcast Waters' concerts because of accusations of anti-semitism against him, the Guardian reported.

In an op-ed piece, The Jerusalem Post noted Lorde would have been "by far" the highest profile artist to perform in the country in 2018.

2017's Rohingya Crisis In Photos

20 in Coxs Bazar, Bangladesh.

A violent, ongoing campaign of state-sanctioned persecution has driven more than 655,000 Rohingya Muslims out of Myanmar's Rakhine State in the last four months of 2017.

An attack by a group of Rohingya militants on government security posts in late August triggered the brutal purge by state forces, which humanitarian parties have decried as disproportionate and indiscriminate retaliation against the entire minority Muslim population.

By Sept.

24, at least 9,000 Rohingyas had died, according to Doctors Without Borders.

The hundreds of thousands of refugees have fled to neighboring Bangladesh to escape ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where Rohingyas have extremely limited rights and have endured decades of government repression.

Gruesome reports by human rights groups document systematic assaults on Rohingyas and their villages, including rape, arson, shootings, beatings, and torture by state officials.

Overpopulated refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, a Bangladeshi border city, are rapidly running out of basic resources as the number of new arrivals continues to swell.

Myanmar has repeatedly denied access to international authorities and investigators, including United Nations Special Rapporteur Yanghee Lee, making it difficult to grasp the scope of the unfolding crisis.

And Burmese civil leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a now-disgraced Nobel Laureate, has downplayed the atrocities against Rohingyas as international cries for her to take action grow louder.

Suu Kyi and Gen.

Aung Min Hlaing, head of the Burmese army, could be tried for genocide, U.N.

High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussain said this week.

Below, photographs show Rohingya families fighting for survival as they restart their lives in Bangladesh.

The following images may be disturbing to some viewers.

Danish Siddiqui / Reuters An exhausted Rohingya refugee woman touches the shore after crossing the Bangladesh-Myanmar border by boat through the Bay of Bengal, in Shah Porir Dwip, Bangladesh on Sept.

Reuters photographer Danish Siddiqui: It was a clear morning and I could see the several clouds of smoke in the background on the Myanmar side.

After a few hours waiting on the beach the fishing boats started arriving with Rohingyas.

This image was taken just after a family member of the Rohingya woman carried her from the boat.

The exhausted Rohingya woman sat on the beach and put her hand to feel the shore after the long and dangerous journey from Myanmar.   Damir Sagolj / Reuters Rohingya refugees who fled from Myanmar make their way through the rice field after crossing the border in Palang Khali, Bangladesh, on Oct.

Reuters photographer Damir Sagolj: We were covering a tragic accident in which a boat carrying Rohingya refugees capsized and many, mostly children, died when we got a tip from colleagues that two hours drive to the north, thousands of refugees stranded on the border were finally crossing into Bangladesh.

I rushed in that direction and made it just before the darkness to witness unreal scenes.

Many thousands of people, carrying the sick and injured, the elderly and children, and their few possessions were slowly making their way through the mud and rice fields to the relative safety of Bangladesh.

I thought I had witnessed enough tragedy that day for a lifetime, and yet it was just another day in a never-ending story for the Rohingya people fleeing Myanmar.   Damir Sagolj / Reuters Rohingya refugees collapse from exhaustion after they arrive by a small wooden boat from Myanmar to the shore of Shah Porir Dwip, in Teknaf, near Coxs Bazar in Bangladesh, on Oct.

Reuters photographer Damir Sagolj: Unlike those who were crossing the Naf River under the cover of the darkness, this group of Rohingya refugees were landing at the beach of Shah Porir Dwip in the broad daylight.

They were totally exhausted -- I could only imagine what these people had been through before the rickety vessel brought them to Bangladesh.

After landing, many just collapse.

But not much later, as if awoken by survival instinct, they got back on their feet, collected children and the few possessions they brought with them, and continued by foot towards the refugee camps, a safe haven for those fleeing danger in Myanmar.   Damir Sagolj / Reuters Roshid Jan, a Rohingya refugee who said she is not sure of her age, cries holding her son Muhammad Gyab at their shelter at the camp for widows and orphans inside the Balukhali camp near Coxs Bazar, Bangladesh, on Dec.

Roshid Jan, who walked for 10 days with her five children to Bangladesh after soldiers burned their village, wept when she spoke about her missing husband.

The religious leader in their Phansi village in Myanmars Rakhine State was accused of being a member of the Rohingya militants and arrested 11 months ago, she said.

She had not seen him or heard about his fate since then.

Now she lives with her five children and more than 230 others at camp for Rohingya widows and orphans.

Reuters photographer Damir Sagolj: Three hills away from the nearest road, in a dusty valley of Balukhali refugee camp, a patchwork of densely packed red tents hides an ocean of grief and pain.

Some call it a red camp for its colour, others a long camp because of its shape but its best known for those who found shelter there.

This is a widows camp, its unofficial and energetic leader explained after I introduced myself.

In about 50 tents, over 230 women and children live.

There are no men.

As I was listening the stories of widows and orphans this camp shelters, I realized its difficult to imagine a place with more sorrow than this.

The camp seemed like a place in which the whole Rohingya tragedy is condensed.   Anadolu Agency via Getty Images Rohingya Muslims who fled from ongoing military operations in Myanmars Rakhine State make their way through muddy water after crossing the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Coxs Bazar, Bangladesh, on Sept.

Mohammad Ponir Hossain / Reuters Hamida, a Rohingya refugee woman, cries as she holds her 40-day-old son, who died as a boat capsized on the shore of Shah Porir Dwip, in Teknaf, Bangladesh, on Sept.

Reuters photographer Mohammad Ponir Hossain: I was taking pictures of exhausted refugees on the beach when I heard an auto-rickshaw driver shouting that a boat had capsized.

I rushed to the spot and found people crying over the dead body of a child.

I took a picture of Hamida, cradling the tiny pale body of her child, Abdul Masood.

He appears to have died as the survivors scrambled through the crashing waves to shore.

Hamidas husband Nasir Ahmed carried his son away from the crowd.

The couples other son survived the accident.

These people are so desperate that they are risking their lives to escape Myanmar.

The pictures show what is going on here.   Paula Bronstein via Getty Images A man struggles to carry supplies across a stream as the monsoon rains continue to make life miserable for the displaced Rohingya on Sept.
