F1 news: Fernando Alonso makes big Red Bull claim amid Max Verstappen incident
Alonso finished fifth in the Formula One 2018 opener at the Australian Grand Prix to record McLaren's best start to a season since 2014. Many fans and pundits expect this year's Constructors' Championship to be a three-horse race between Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.
Mercedes are looking for a fifth straight title, but the likes of Sebastian Vettel for Ferrari and Max Verstappen in Red Bull will push them to the wire.
Alonso is flying the flag for McLaren and he is confident things will only improve for his team following their impressive start in Melbourne. I think our race pace was more or less what we had expected, were faster in race pace than in qualifying, but as of today we cannot get everything out of the car because were still lacking some parts," he said.
"I believe we are at the lowest point of our curve, theres a lot of things we really have to improve, we need to bring the updates for the next couple of races to be close to Red Bull as soon as possible." Alonso kept Verstappen at bay throughout the race as the Dutchman failed to find a way past him and had to settle for sixth.
The Spaniard moved ahead of Verstappen under the Virtual Safety Car and believes McLaren's shift from Honda to Renault power this season will help his chances.
The situation [with Verstappen] was always under control and, as I said yesterday, this year we can defend our position, we can attack, so its a different kind of racing for us," he added. "I'm happy, it was a good start, as I said yesterday we have a lot of potential to get out of the car, I hope we can extract it all and hopefully in the next few races we can fight higher up the field. Alonso will look to continue McLaren's promising start to the season when the cars take to the track in Bahrain on April 8.
