Hulk Hogan RETURNING To WWE As Smackdown Live General Manager?! | WrestleTalk News Mar. 2018 - Duration: 3:56.

Hello and welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I am Luke Owen.

Headline: Hulk Hogan As Smackdown Live General Manager?

In the last couple of weeks there has been reports that WWE and Hulk Hogan are coming

to terms on a return for the Hulkster.

PWInsider first reported the story that the two sides were talking, which was confirmed

by WWE who told them: "We have had discussions with Terry Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan) about how

he can help others learn from his mistakes, however, he is not under any contract with

WWE."

Hogan was fired from WWE in 2015 after footage of him using racial slurs was leaked to the

public.

This resulted in Hogan suing the website Gawker and his former best friend Bubba The Love

Sponge who recorded the footage in secret in 2006.

In the end Hogan won his lawsuit for $115 million - although that was negotiated down

to $31 million.

When WWE fired Hogan they removed him from their history, taking his WWE Hall of Fame

profile off the website and telling their merchandisers to instantly stop making anything

related to Hogan.

He was removed from their video packages, and plans for a Hogan statue and DVD set were

also cancelled.

In more recent times however WWE have been softer on featuring Hogan as part of their

history, featuring him in both the 30 For 30 documentaries on Ric Flair and the HBO

documentary on Andre the Giant - which were co-produced by WWE.

Following PWInsider's report that WWE were in talks with Hogan, many started to speculate

that he could be the replacement for Daniel Bryan as Smackdown Live general manager - now

that Bryan is medically cleared to wrestle again.

This was at first only speculated by Mike Johnson of PWInsider and Dave Meltzer of Wrestling

Observer, but Cage Side Seats's rumour section has reported that this indeed could be case.

Hogan appeared at a WWE event last night for the first time since his firing, at the premiere

of HBO's Andre the Giant documentary - and was featured in a WWE tweet about the event

posting a picture of him posing with The Big Show.

PWInsider reached out to WWE about Hogan appearing at the event and they replied, "Hulk Hogan

is an important part of Andre the Giant's history, however his appearance at tonight's

HBO premiere of the documentary and his plans to help others learn from his mistakes does

not mean WWE is rehiring him.

Hogan is not scheduled to be at any upcoming WWE events."

Speaking with TMZ, Hogan said that he would not be appearing at WrestleMania 34 but was

hopeful that one day he would return to WWE.

It has also been reported that WWE Hall of Fame inductee Hillbilly Jim has requested

that Hogan induct him.

Dave Meltzer noted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, "Company sources have noted

the idea of Hogan coming back in a role where he would talk about how stupid he was to have

said what he did, with it being a redemption/forgiveness story and figuring enough time has passed

that his return wouldn't be controversial."

Although one person who doesn't think he's ready is Mark Henry, who told Busted Open,

"I've had many talks, I mean with dozens of guys.

The consensus is there's a lot of work to be done to heal that wound and fix that wall…

It's gonna have to be more community service and outside work.

Support for programs, even create a program that deals with diversity in the workplace."

Henry also added that he would be "shocked" if Hogan returned at WrestleMania 34.

Click the i above my head to vote and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

And speaking of polls I asked yesterday if Roddy Piper or John Cena would have the better

delivery of I'm here to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and unsurprisingly Roddy won with

56% of the vote.

Who could Braun Strowman's partner be when he takes on The Bar for the tag team championships?

And head over to WrestleTalk.com to read about five surprising appearances we could see at

WrestleMania 34.

14 Dead, Hundreds Injured In Fiery South Africa Train Crash

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - More than a dozen people were killed and hundreds were feared injured after a train struck a lorry, derailed and burst into flames in South Africa on Thursday.

Footage from television news showed fire engulfing one of the train's carriages after the accident, which occurred as it traveled between Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg.

Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi said the train, which was carrying 700 passengers, jumped the tracks after hitting the truck, which was attempting to negotiate a level crossing.

He said preliminary investigations suggested 12 people had died in the crash and 268 were injured, including four critically.

Emergency services said 14 people had died, and dozens were hurt, calling the minister's injury estimate premature.

"I have been briefed that the accident was the result of a truck that was driving through a level crossing.

You can see for yourself the truck driver was taking chances," Maswanganyi said on the news channel of national broadcaster SABC.

He said the driver had survived and police were investigating.

Emergency services and rail officials were not immediately able to confirm the circumstances of the crash.

South Africa has the continent's largest railway network, but it has been plagued by mismanagement and under-investment that has seen train use dwindle despite it being the cheapest from of public transportation.

In a recent report, the government's Rail Safety Regulator (RSR) said that, in the 2016/17 financial year, 495 people lost their lives in the country's railway environment and 2,079 were injured.

The death toll was up 5 percent increase from the previous year.

( US News ) French President Emmanuel Macron Vows To Ban 'Fake News' - Duration: 3:43.

French President Emmanuel Macron Vows To Ban 'Fake News'

French President Emmanuel Macron plans to introduce legislation that will crack down on so-called "fake news" during French election campaigns, calling the spread of such misinformation a threat to democracy.

Speaking to journalists at an annual New Year reception on Wednesday, Macron said he intended to overhaul the country's media laws in order to boost transparency and quash the spread of fake news on social media.  "If we want to protect liberal democracies, we must have strong legislation," Macron said, per Reuters.

"At election time, on internet platforms, the rules applying to content won't be exactly the same." The new legislation would empower France's media watchdog, the CSA, to combat the dissemination of fake news during elections and mandate more transparency for sponsored content.

There would also be an emergency provision that would allow a judge to delete content or block access to a website deemed to be propagating fake news.  Macron previously accused Russia and its state-owned media companies of spreading fake news in order to interfere with the French presidential campaign.

The American intelligence community has also expressed "high confidence" that Russia used a similar "influence campaign" during the 2016 U.S.

presidential election to "undermine public faith in the U.S.

democratic process." Marine Le Pen, the far-right presidential candidate who was defeated by Macron last year, excoriated the president for his planned fake news ban.

France was "muzzling its citizens," Le Pen said in a series of tweets on Wednesday, adding: "Who will decide if a piece of news is fake? Judges? The government?" Macron's announcement came just days after Germany began enforcing its new anti-fake news law, the controversial Network Enforcement Act, also known as the NetzDG law.

The German law, which took effect Jan.

1 after a grace period, requires all internet platforms with more than 2 million users to implement a system for reporting and scrubbing potentially illicit content, including fake news and hate speech.  Reuters French President Emmanuel Macron delivers his New Year speech to members of the press at the Elysee Palace in Paris on January 3, 2018.

News Brief March 29, 2018 - Duration: 10:24.

Feels like it has become a weekly ritual - firings and resignations from the Trump administration.

But last night, the firing of Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin still came as a bit

of a shock.

Yeah, I mean, consider what happened last summer.

President Trump was praising Shulkin at a bill signing.

As the audience was clapping, Trump mouthed his famous catchphrase, you're fired.

And then he said...

We'll never have to use those words.

We'll never have to use those words on our David.

All right, well, fast-forward eight months, and the president took to Twitter to announce

that Shulkin is out and that the current White House physician, Dr. Ronny Jackson, is in

as his nominee to take over at the VA.

So what is behind the timing of this change?

And what does it mean for the embattled agency and also for veterans?

NPR's Quil Lawrence covers Veterans Affairs.

He's with us now.

Good morning, Quil.

Good morning.

All right, so Dr. Shulkin came on during the Obama administration.

He was tasked with overhauling the troubled VA health network.

He had bipartisan support, and as we just heard, it seemed like President Trump really

liked him.

And then his last six weeks got rocky.

What actually led to his departure?

There were two things.

An ethics investigation by the inspector general at VA came out saying that Shulkin had taken

an official trip to Europe last year but that he improperly brought his wife along, spent

several days on tourism.

He had to end - he ended up paying back several thousand dollars of improperly spent VA funds.

So that was not very popular among rank-and-file veterans.

Congress ended up supporting him on - after that ethics investigation.

But what was even more interesting were emails exchanged between other political appointees

within the Trump administration who were actively planning to use this investigation to push

out Shulkin and his top deputies because they didn't think he was moving fast enough to

increase the use of private care at the VA.

OK, so there are a couple backstories here.

What do you know about his replacement nominee, Dr. Ronny Jackson?

He's got a great reputation as a physician.

He's a combat doc.

He was in Iraq.

But he was last in the public eye in January when he gave President Trump a clean bill

of health.

Other than that, no one really knows his qualifications to run such a huge organization.

VA has more than 300,000 staff.

And a lot of actual veterans really liked Dr. Shulkin, right?

How are veterans' organizations reacting to all this?

The big organizations had been pulling for Shulkin.

They thought he was pragmatic, a technocrat.

They don't know much about Jackson.

Shulkin wasn't a vet.

Jackson is.

But other than that, they're sort of saying, we're going to wait and see; we want to get

to know him.

Do you think that Dr. Jackson is going to have an easy time getting confirmed?

Well, there's already some noise, particularly among Democrats as they heard the news last

night - they think Shulkin was pushed out by an agenda that wants to privatize the VA.

And for all its warts, vets like the care they get at the VA once they get in the door.

And the VA does pretty well with its outcomes, even compared to the private sector.

So we may see in this confirmation hearing an effort to extract some pledges from Jackson

that he'll resist the agenda - the same agenda that may have just gotten his predecessor

fired.

That is really interesting.

NPR's Quil Lawrence.

Thank you so much, Quil.

Thanks, Noel.

Last week, Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, won an election that puts him in power for

the next six years.

But now Putin is up against one of the biggest crises of his 18-year presidency.

Yeah, a couple things to look at here - he's facing anger right now at home over a fire

in a shopping mall in Siberia that killed 64 people.

And abroad, the country is facing unprecedented isolation after the U.S. and (inaudible) other

countries kicked out dozens of Russian diplomats.

NPR's Lucian Kim is on the line from Moscow to talk about how Putin is dealing with all

of this.

Good morning, Lucian.

Good morning.

So Putin has this landslide victory in the presidential election, which we all expected.

How are these two simultaneous disasters - the fire and the diplomatic crisis - affecting

his popularity?

Well, surprisingly, both fit the Kremlin narrative quite well, that Putin is the only leader

for Russia.

From the Kremlin's point of view, these mass expulsions of diplomats just prove that the

rest of the world is ganging up on Russia, and this horrible fire shows people that Putin

is a good czar who just has a lot of bad ministers, advisers and governors around him.

He visited the site on Tuesday.

He was trying to put himself on the side of the people, and there, he said criminal negligence

was to blame.

Just yesterday, one of his top advisers said rabble-rousers from the opposition are trying

to exploit this tragedy for their own political purposes.

Of course, the real problem here isn't that Russians don't know how to put out fires.

Of course, they do.

Right.

The problem is corruption among officials and the willingness of businesspeople to play

along with that.

And so when people in Russia are outraged about the fire but not at Putin, what are

they outraged about exactly?

Was the building's code not up to - was the building not up to code?

Well, the building was definitely not up to code.

There were also reports that the - there was a cinema at the top of - on the top floor

of this shopping center.

There were reports that the doors were locked from outside so people couldn't get in without

paying.

And just the combination of this and the slow government reaction has caused a lot of outrage

here.

Let's talk about these diplomatic expulsions, more than 20 countries booting out Russian

diplomats.

How is Putin reacting to that right now?

Well, Putin himself has not reacted.

He's really been preoccupied with the fire.

But his spokesman said that any response will be, in his words, reciprocal.

What's quite - kind of interesting is that a lot of the rhetorical reaction here in Moscow

is directed at Britain.

Yesterday, the Foreign Ministry issued a statement and said, Britain has shown that it can't

predict - protect the lives of Russian citizens on British soil and that Britain actually

needs to prove that it didn't poison this double agent - former double agent, Sergei

Skripal.

The attitudes towards the U.S. seems actually more tempered - at least, coming from the

Putin - from Putin's administration.

His spokesman said Russia wants good relations with all countries.

And it seems that Putin is still very interested in a summit meeting with Donald Trump.

NPR's Lucian Kim from Moscow.

Thank you so much, Lucian.

Thanks.

All right, it seems like barely a day goes by without a new installment in the crisis

that is unfolding in Venezuela.

Yeah.

I mean, the economy there has collapsed.

The country is desperately short of food and also medicine.

And now we have news of another tragedy - a fire in a police station that officials say

has killed at least 68 people.

NPR's Philip Reeves reports on South America, and he joins us now.

Phil, good morning.

Good morning.

So what do we know about this fire last night?

Well, this happened in the prison cells of a police station in Valencia.

That's a city about a hundred miles west of the capital, Caracas.

And reports say that disturbances broke out inside the cells.

Some prisoners set fire to their mattresses.

The fire spread.

And at one point, rescuers had to punch a hole in the wall of the building to try to

get people out.

Wow.

Venezuela's chief prosecutor says on Twitter that nearly all of the 68 who died were prisoners,

although the victims also include two women who were visiting.

Phil, what are Venezuela's prisons like?

Are they overcrowded?

Are they violent?

Is this the kind of thing you expect?

Yes, indeed.

I mean, human rights groups have for ages been warning about the dire dysfunctionality

of the Venezuelan penal system - overcrowded, awash with disease, malnutrition, not to mention

drugs and guns.

And this situation has an added twist, which is that, you know, the relatives of the people

who were the victims of this weren't getting any news.

They gathered outside the building, desperate for information.

No one was telling what was going on.

They got angry, and there were clashes with security forces, who used tear gas to try

to bring the situation under control.

What's the status of that now?

Is it under control outside of the prison?

We're hearing it is under control, yes.

Venezuela is obviously deeply volatile in a lot of different ways.

What does this incident mean for the government of Nicolas Maduro?

Well, it's another reminder of the desperate situation there.

I mean, the currency has crashed.

This - the inflation rate is running into - well into four figures.

Millions of Venezuelans have left the country.

As you mentioned, there's a dire shortage of food, medicine and other basics.

It puts more pressure on President Nicolas Maduro and the ruling socialist party.

They're already unpopular.

Maduro's organizing an election in an attempt to get a second term in May, and that is being

boycotted by most of the mainstream opposition, who regard it as fraudulent, a view that is

also held by much of the international community.

Is he likely to get a second term if this election goes ahead?

He is likely to get a second term, although he is being challenged by one figure on the

opposition side who is coming - performing very well in the polls.

But Venezuela and Maduro have a reputation of rigging elections, and there is a widespread

expectation that that will happen again.

NPR's Philip Reeves.

Thank you so much, Phil.

You're welcome.

Suicide Bomber Kills At Least 11 In Afghan Capital

KABUL, Jan 4 (Reuters) - A suicide bomber in the Afghan capital caused dozens of casualties on Thursday after blowing himself up close to a group of security personnel who were carrying out an operation against illegal drugs and alcohol dealing, officials said.

Islamic State, which has claimed a series of attacks in Kabul over the past two years, issued a statement on its Amaq news agency saying it was responsible.

It said a suicide bomber targeting a group of police and intelligence service personnel had detonated an explosive vest, killing or wounding around 80 of them.

Wahid Majroh, a spokesman for the ministry of public health, said 11 dead and 25 wounded had been brought to city hospitals after the blast in an area of the city not far from the U.S.

Embassy and other foreign missions.

As security forces arrived, a Reuters reporter saw four police vehicles carrying dead or wounded security personnel from the scene.

Police officers at the scene said the bomber had been wearing police or army uniform and had approached a group of security personnel conducting controls on illegal drugs and alcohol sellers, but there was no official confirmation.

"Kabul police forces were there to prevent a possible protest when a suicide bomber approached them and detonated his suicide vest," Kabul police spokesman Bashir Mujahid said.

While Afghan forces backed by U.S.

air strikes have claimed some success against Taliban insurgents since the United States announced a stepped up military strategy last year, high profile attacks on civilian targets in Kabul have continued.

The attack happened days after a suicide bomber killed at least 41 people and wounded more than 80 at a Shi'ite cultural center in Kabul, underlining the precarious security situation in the Afghan capital.

That attack was also claimed by Islamic State, which has claimed responsibility for a number of similar attacks in Afghanistan over the past two years.

Sorry, Toby — Winter Storms Don't Have Names (Except on Cable News) - Duration: 3:34.

Sorry, Toby — Winter Storms Don't Have Names (Except on Cable News)

A noreaster is pounding the East Coast today (March 21), and it may or may not be named Toby, depending on whom you ask.

If youre following the storm on cable news, you probably do call it Toby.

The Weather Channel started the convention of naming big winter storms in 2012, and their chosen names have started to trickle into other outlets.

(Live Science learned the name Toby after overhearing reporters at another publication that shares our newsroom using it.).

Meteorologists outside of [The Weather Channel] sphere refer to storms by their dates, Sara Ganetis, a meteorologist at NOAAs Weather Prediction Center, told Live Science in an email.

For example, the 8-9 February 2013 blizzard. In casual conversation, they might add flair to a winter storm name after the fact, such as The 13-14 March 1993 Superstorm but not in a scientific manner. But, as much fun as it is to assign a name that sounds like a middle-age management consultant to every blustery squall that blows through, World Meteorological Organization guidelines state that only tropical cyclones (hurricanes, typhoons and their smaller cousins) get names.

And scientists who study the weather arent fans of bending that rule. .

Live Science reached out to a number of weather experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and at universities to ask whether theyd be calling todays storm Toby, and they universally said no.

Allison Wing, a professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science at Florida State University, agreed.

Several years ago, The Weather Channel began naming storms, but these are not any sort of official designations, just something that a private company decided to do, Wing told Live Science.

Government and university meteorologists and scientists generally do not use these unofficial Weather Channel names to discuss or describe winter storms..

Joey Picca, a meteorologist at NOAAs Storm Prediction Center, also said he and his colleagues would not be using the name Toby today.

So, does that mean the storm isnt named Toby? Well, Live Science supposes thats a matter of personal interpretation.
