Hello everyone, today we will see the upgrade of the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus printer
As always at the top of the screen you will find the link of this video in Italian language,
all new videos are also subtitled in English.
The upgrade will consist of the installation of a 3 mm thick
tempered borosilicate glass on the heated bed of the printer.
The glass allows you to print more precisely than the original bed and offers
better adhesion of the pieces during printing, it is also easier
to use hairspray.
Furthermore, the glass can be removed and cleaned more easily.
The tools necessary to achieve this improvement are:
An L-shaped key with double head and hexagonal bits of the torx bit type, with a hole
also called French and possibly also a digital caliper.
While for the materials we used:
Four clips for Ultimaker UM2 printer;
different 25 mm office metal clips
a tempered borosilicate glass of 213X200 mm
and 3 mm thick for the Reprap printer
First of all we place the glass in the printer bed, we immediately notice that, although
it is not specific to this printer, it almost entirely covers the original bed.
With the caliper, we measure the overall thickness of the glass and the printer bed
and compare it to the two clip models.
25 mm office clips are the best !!!!
Initially I positioned 4 clips sideways to do the calibration of the plate, then
we will see what will be the number and the optimal position of the clips.
The bed is thicker than the original configuration
furthermore, adjustments for aligning the plate are not sufficient to compensate for the
thickness of the glass,
So we have to move the limit switch micro-button
on the vertical axis by a few millimeters
Then proceed with the coarse alignment of the bed to prevent the extruder from bumping
the glass and the clips
Now let's proceed with standard alignment
using the printer utility.
At the top of the screen you will find the link to the printer's unboxing tutorial
and the alignment of the original plate.
We continue the alignment of the bed through the printer utility.
After aligning the bed, we print some objects
to find the best position for the clips.
Printed items are:
some accessories to squeeze the tubes for toothpaste,
a photographic adapter ring for
Pentacon 135mm lens, you will find the link of a tutorial at the top of the screen.
During the printing we also measured the energy consumption of the printer and
we saw that consumption varies between about 40 and 187 watts.
After several printing tests we determined
that two clips are enough to put in the back of the bed.
While on the front and side sides of the plate the extruder and the various fans
during printing can release the clips
even a small movement of the glass certainly compromises the quality of the printed objects,
because the extruder and its fans could pass very close to the edge of the glass.
