China deploys 'GUAM KILLER' missiles as US tensions rage
CHINA has revealed the infamous "Guam Killer" missiles have been deployed amid tensions
with the US.
Guam Killers have been given the name by Chinese media for their ability to strike the US naval
and air force base on the island of Guam.
Military spokesman Wu Qian said that the Chinese military had brought the weapons – named
DF-26s – into service.
The missiles are China's first conventionally armed weapon capable of reaching Guam, and
are also known as the "Guam Express".
Pictures have been shared previously of the weapons being paraded through Beijing.
Guam Killers have a range of 2,500 miles and can also be armed with nuclear weapons.
China are believed to have 16 launcher trucks for the missiles in service.
The confirmation of their deployment comes amid continuing tensions between the US and
China.
Beijing are also carrying out war drills, which have been accused as a way to intimidate
their neighbour the US pal Taiwan.
China regards the island as a breakaway province, which goes at odds with Xi Jinping's "One-China
policy" of a unified People's Republic.
Speaking at a monthly news conference, Qian revealed the Guam Killer missiles had been
deployed.
She assured the weapons can carry both nukes and conventional warheads.
And she boasted the weapons can strike targets on both the land and the sea.
The missile first debuted at a military parade in Beijing back in 2015.
China also doubled down on its war games near Taiwan, saying they would be used to deter
"rash actions".
Taiwan has raged over the war drills – which included Chinese H-6K bombers circling the
island.
Chiu Chui-cheng of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council accused China of "sparking tensions"
and assured the nation would "never bow down to any military threat".
He also accused China of "deliberately manipulating the exercise to pressure and harass Taiwan".
