I am a fan of Korean dramas.
But as much as I love K-dramas, and Korean actors and actresses, there are a number of things about Korea that distress me.
I have been reading a lot about Korea recently, and their dangerous obsession with beauty standards freaks me out.
From what I understand, there is a stereotype about what should be considered pretty in Korea.
Fair complexion, small face, double eyelids, a skinny figure seem to be few of the must-have features for all Korean girls aspiring to be pretty.
A lot of young Koreans have complexes regarding their looks and resort to one form or another of cosmetic surgery after graduation.
Isn't it alarming and depressing that an entire society is unwilling to accept you for who you are? Isn't it just sad that you may feel not good enough because of something like the way you look; which is something that you were born with and had no control in choosing?.
Don't get me wrong here.
I understand that everyone likes good looking people.
It's a natural instinct in most of us.
And neither am I saying that cosmetic surgeries should be completely banned.
They might be necessary for some people with medical issues.
And I am in no way saying that looking pretty is a bad thing.
It's a good thing.
But acceptance is even better.
If the pressure on common people to look pretty is so high, we can only imagine how excruciating it must be for the stars.
Can we blame the agencies alone for making the idols go through all of this if at the end of the day we are the ones who want them to be like that? They only supply what we demand.
I believe that every person is capable of being loved, irrespective of how they look, how intelligent they are, or irrespective of any other criteria that the society deems good enough.
Can we not learn a lesson from this and learn to love people for who they are, and not who they might or should be? In an interview, Jonghyun said that he is scared to show his true side to people because they may misunderstand him or criticize him for being that way.
Isn't that heartbreaking? We are so quick to say "Saranghae" to our idols, and are equally quick to judge them too.
Can we not love them for who they truly are? Is it too much to ask? Can we not accept them even with the parts of them that we don't like? If nothing else, let's at least not brutally criticize them for something that we don't approve of.
And if criticism is a must, let it at least be constructive.
