Hi and welcome to a new video. Today I have a special guest with me. Zenchilli
Hi my friends, Hi Roman
He's at my place today because we wanted to delid his 4770K for his retro gaming PC
If you want to see what we did just check out his channel and watch the video which we did together
That's correct. So what are we doing today?
Yes I thought we would do something unusual today which is what you are used to on my channel
So basically I wanted to show him how good the protection works inside current hardware
So for example what will happen if we simply remove the cooler of an 8700K while the system is running
Or what happens if we just start up a system without cooler. How long can it run and what will happen?
Personally I have a lot of trust in nowadays hardware protection
we deliberately didn't test before what will happen
I told him that I'm quite sure that nothing will go wrong
Following the motto - no risk, no fun
Exactly and if something goes wrong it will at least be funny
Hardware base is a ASUS MAXIMUS X HERO with a delidded i7-8700k
it shouldn't really matter that the CPU has been delidded. It should just improve the thermal conductivity and therefore lower the delta between cores and IHS
So the result would be that the IHS is warmer than using the stock TIM
RAM is a G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Kit and we also have a capture card on here
Exactly and as you can see the cooler has not been mounted. It's just sitting on the CPU without thermal paste.
And if you touch it you can also feel that the CPU cooler is quite warm already
Yes it feels quite warm indeed but we have also been sitting here already for almost 10 minutes
So before we start please open CPU-Z
Yes so we can show that we're really using an 8700K
CPU is running stock
So you can see the 8700K is running at 4.7 GHz
You can right click into CPU-Z and show that all cores are running at the same speed
So I'd say just go ahead and remove the CPU cooler
Yes just remove it
nice and warm so you can warm your hands during winter :D
So we can now see how the temperature is increasing
But as you can see it's not like the CPU straight blows up if you remove the CPU cooler and leave it running
So the CPU should now start to clock down once it reaches temperatures above 100°C
Just to interrupt you - the CPU is already clocking down. It already went to 4400 MHz
We can also check what the individual cores are doing and we can see they are throtteling
so hardware protection is kicking in
Yes but it's still running
Even though 100°C is quite warm already
I will try to find a thermometer so we can measure the temperature of the heatspreader
So I found a thermometer and the CPU is still running. Now for over a minute already
Just hold the thermometer while I try to measure the center of the heatspreader
What are the temperatures?
93.6 °C
Yes and increasing
I'd say that's really quite warm already
but as you can see the system is still running even after over 2 minutes without CPU cooler
of course it's during idle in windows but the CPU is currently clocking at about 2.4 GHz on all cores
I'm actually quite surprised because I expected the system to shut down after about 30s
I thought it would shut down even earlier
the voltage is also quite low now with about 0.8 Volt
At least I wouldn't put my finger on there now :D I guess it would be a bit too warm
as you can see it now dropped to 2.2 GHz, 1.8 GHz, 1.5 GHz
I think it's hitting the limit now
yes and these are the clocks you want to see if you are using a 8700k
So I think for the future we don't even need CPU coolers anymore. We just put the CPU into the socket without cooler
Yes I think especially with your logo on the CPU it looks much nicer without cooler
I think it's not going above 100 °C
Yes I think it levelled off now so we won't see any more drastic changes
Yes it also started to clock back up within the last few moments so it hit the break-even-point
As you can see it just clocks down, temperature dropps a little and then it clocks back up
but we're not able to reach over 100°C
But it also shows how good the delid is if you simply check the delta between the core temperature and the heatspreader
so from what I can see there will be no changes anymore from this point
So what happens if we just run Cinebench?
I just asked myself the same question. So I'd say you just start cinebench now
I will keep track of the temperature
yes it clocked down to 800 MHz and is extremely fast :D
but for some reason it's running
I have to say I'm quite surprised
This is really not what I expected
CPU is now running at 800 MHz and 0.6 Volt which is also the minimum multiplier the CPU can run
So the CPU can't go lower than this
Voltage is also at the lowest possible level with about 0.6 - 0.7 Volt
It would just shut down if the voltage was even lower
But this also means we don't have to wait much longer because it simply won't shut down now
I also think so. I expected it to shut down once cinebench was running because the power consumption would increase
And because the voltages and clocks are already low it wouldn't be possible to save more power
But as we can see it's not shutting down
We definitely won't break an OC record like this
But maybe the lowest score ever in cinebench
I have the feeling that we will reach about 50 points in cinebench
it's for sure below the lowest i3 which is listed here in cinebench
which is ranked with 214 points
This will take years so we will just jup forward for you guys
Of course we will be back if anything exciting happens
Wow! Well we have crazy 125 points in cinebench
I would suggest to also do the single threaded test but from my experience this will take ages so I guess we will just skip that
we also wanted to go and grab some pizza after this so I didn't really want to wait this long
This is actually really impressive and I don't even know what to say
I expected everything else but not this
I knew it would run quite long without cooler but not this long. I often just go to bios without cooler because I'm too lazy
And just to dial in some settings it's usually fine and in bios you can always keep track of the temperature and shut down if it's getting too hot
So as long as I see it's about 60 or 70 °C I just dial in the settings and shut down the system once I'm done with it.
But there we're talking about 30s in BIOS without load and not 10 minutes of cinebench
The funny part is that cinebench is done and it now clocks back up because the CPU has more headroom
Yes we are already back at 1 GHz now
And the heatspreader temperature is still sitting at 96°C now
The question is if this is also related to delidding because we have a much smaller delta to IHS and therefore the core can become much hotter than normal
It probably won't work as good if the CPU wasn't delidded
You don't have a stock CPU here, do you?
Unfortunately not
well okay, I'm not surprised
So this was really interesting for both of us. We both didn't expect that it could run this long without heatsink
Yes I expected maybe 20s followed by a shutdown
But doesn't seem to be the case
I don't even know what we could do now to force the CPU to shut down
Overclocking?
The thing is even if we would overclock this system it would still just lower clocks and voltages so we would end up at the same result
So overclocking wouldn't make much sense in this case
Well I'd say we're done with this topic. It was really exciting and at the same time also very surprising to see that nothing really happened
I wouldn't recommend to repeat what we did here but I think if I will test my next rig quickly I will just not mount a heatsink
Yes you can be lazy and don't have to worry mounting such a CPU cooler
Make sure you check out the channel of Zenchilli. You can find the link in the description.
