Korea's consumer prices climbed 1.3% y/y in March: Statistics Korea - Duration: 1:40.
Consumer prices in Korea climbed one-point-three percent last month... mainly due to price
increases of agricultural products.
Kim Ji-yeon breaks down the digits for us.
Consumer prices in Korea saw on-year increases in the one-percent range for the sixth straight
month in March.
Statistics Korea says its consumer price index jumped one-point-three percent on-year.
This is mainly due to price increases of agricultural products which spiked by a whopping four-point-seven
percent compared to the previous year.
In particular, the prices of grain, including the country's staple food rice, rose by more
than 20-percent... the steepest rate of increase since June 1996.
An official from the statistics agency says however that price increases of vegetables
has slowed compared to the previous month as the weather has got warmer.
Fisheries product prices on the other hand rose by more than 5-percent on-year in March.
The core inflation rate, which excludes volatile food and oil prices, also jumped by one-point-three
percent on-year.
The prices of service fees increased as hiring fees for housekeepers climbed 11-percent in
March on-year, the sharpest rate of increase since December 2007.
Food and beverage prices in eateries and bars also rose by two-and-a-half-percent on-year
in March.
An official from the statistics agency says however that it's not clear whether that's
mainly due to the 16-point-4-percent increase in the minimum wage this year, currently at
around seven U.S. dollars an hour.

Private consumption per GDP falls to record low in 2017 - Duration: 0:49.
South Korea's private consumption per GDP fell to a record low last year.
According to a report by the Bank of Korea on Tuesday, last year's private spending was
48-point-one-percent of GDP,… a zero-point-six percentage point drop from
a year earlier.
South Korea's private spending figures have fallen faster than any other country, and
are at their lowest level since 1970 when the BOK began to gather relevant data.
The percentage of private consumption per GDP, which had reached 70-percent in the early
1970s, dropped to around 50-percent in the 2000s.
Economic experts say that recent falls have to do with Korea's sluggish job market and
aging population.

A top four finish is highly unlikely for the Gunners but they can still quality for the
Champions League by winning the Europa League
Calum Chambers insists Arsenal won't take their eye off the ball in the league.
The Gunners have little to play for in the Premier League after falling well off the
top four pace, 13 points behind fierce rivals Tottenham.
Their priority has now become winning the Europa League with that competition offering
Arsene Wenger's men their only realistic route back into the Champions League.
After seeing off Stoke on Sunday to stay sixth Arsenal face CSKA Moscow in a quarter-final
first leg tie on Thursday and defender Chambers said: "We want to finish as high as we can
in the league so we are going to keep fighting until the end of the season with that.
"We want to win every game so at the moment we are going to prepare for every game and
try to get the results we need from each game.
"You could let your mind drift to the Europa League.
"But we are a professional side and do want to finish as high as we can in the league
so these league games are still important for us.
"We got the job done today so now we can put that to one side and focus on Thursday."
