Michael McIntyre includes NZ on world tour - but Wellington misses out

English comedian Michael McIntyre has confirmed hell tour New Zealand in 2019 - but hes dropped Wellington from his original itinerary.

McIntyres web site had listed New Zealand dates since October last year, but there wasnt an official announcement at the time and no New Zealand venues were aware he was coming.

Now McIntyre has confirmed he is indeed coming to our shores, but his dates have changed and Wellington has been dropped from the itinerary.

The comedian will perform to Christchurchs Horncastle Arena on June 18 and Aucklands Spark Arena on June 20.

Tickets to both shows go on sale at 10am on April 11 this year.

McIntyre was last here in 2016 for a single sell-out Auckland show.

He is one of the UKs most popular comedians, having sold more than over 1.

5 million tickets there over the course of his career.

Stats check: How do they work out TV ratings?

Stuff is taking a closer look at popular claims or statistics, to see whether they stack up and to dive deeper into the numbers.

In this instalment of the series Stats Check, Andy Fyers takes a look at TV ratings.

TV ratings have the power to make and break careers.

Just ask John Campbell and host of other TV presenters who have lost their primetime TV shows thanks to falling ratings.

They also shape popular culture.

Looking for a reason why reality shows like Married at First Sight and The Bachelor dominate primetime TV and popular discourse? Look no further than TV ratings.  .

Ratings in New Zealand (and most of the world) come from Nielsens Television Audience Measurement (TAM).

In New Zealand TAM involves the detailed monitoring of the TV viewing habits of 600 households, or about 1500 people (Nielsen say they plan to expand this to 900 households later this year).

For the chosen 600 households a Peoplemeter is installed on each TV in the household, which monitors what is being watched and who is watching it.

A handset allows people in each household to press a button and register when they are watching TV.

The results are fed back to Nielsen every day and the TV ratings generated.

Two main ratings are produced daily: One for the 5+ age group and one for the 25-54 age group.

Of course Nielsen can also slice and dice this data by more specific demographics for their clients, but it is the 5+ and 25-54 age bracket ratings that are made public.

THE MIRACLE OF SAMPLING.

At this point many of you will be thinking: there is no way 600 households can accurately record what ALL Kiwi households are watching on TV!.

This is understandable given there are more than 1.

5 million households in New Zealand, of which 600 equates to about 004 per cent.

Thanks to the magic of statistics it is possible to get a pretty good estimate the viewing habits of millions from just a sample of hundreds.

This works if the sample of households - and their viewing habits - are representative of all New Zealand households. .

To see how this can work look no further than opinion polling from 2017s general election.

The three main pollsters polled about 1000 people and accurately estimated the outcome from 2.6 million voters.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS.

Its not hard to imagine a scenario in which a few people in the 600 households could be slack or forgetful at logging in to the Peoplemeter when they watch TV.

This doesnt necessarily invalidate the ratings, although it has the potential to skew them.

Short of stationing someone in every household, there isnt much Nielsen can do to prevent this kind of thing and too much of it might be a problem.

There is also the potential for the people to alter their behaviour because they know their viewing habits are being recorded.

This could occur both consciously and sub-consciously.

Another challenge for TV ratings is the growth of internet streaming TV.

Even forgetting the likes Netflix, Neon and Lightbox, many people are now viewing traditional TV via the internet. .

Nielsen concede they dont yet track this at the same frequency and granularity as traditional television, but they are doing this in other countries and plan to introduce it here, eventually.
