Baía de Todos os Santos is the largest tropical bay in the world.
It is the world's heritage. Itaparica island is considered
a 'great guardian' and the 'great heart' of Baía de Todos os Santos.
Maré de Março is a social and environmental movement founded
by young people from Itaparica island. Everything started with the environmental cause.
Today, we work on other issues such as culture and education.
We understood that all this work
would lead us to the preservation of the environment .
We work on solid waste collection at the ecologically protected area called Medo Island.
We realized that we had to help this island survive,
as it ends up receiving all the waste from sea currents.
Any garbage thrown into Baía de Todos os Santos ends up coming here
because of the island's position
in the middle of the bay.
Some of these bottles are used in initiatives such as Projeto Broto (Sprout Project).
In this project, we plant vegetables, and grow seedlings for trees
that will be used in the reforestation of Medo island.
This way, the waste will be fed into a cycle that favors nature,
which is the great promise of the project.
In our research, we've found
16 archaeological sites that are not listed or recognized
by the official heritage gatekeepers.
We've gathered so many documents that we've found it necessary to share them.
Now, all material is available on itaparica.net
along with other databases related to Itaparica
and our culture, heritage,
and ecology.
Every day, more and more young people want to leave Itaparica island.
We give environmental lectures at schools and in entrance examination courses.
We want to prove to the young people that living on the island is possible.
They can have a prosperous life here.
Maré de Março is a phenomenon of the tides:
when the sea reaches its summit and the tide goes up three meters.
This is our goal: we want people here to "overflow"
with feelings of belonging and identity.
