1Des Daily News: "Desis and the Stigma against Mental Health" - Duration: 4:15.
Hi Desis, this is your host Ayushi Chhabra with today's edition of 1Des Daily News.
We are super thankful for the love and support we have gotten from all of you for our work,
but there are the occasional trolls on the internet.
One such "so-called" "hater", wrote a barrage of hate speech under our controversial
video on "The Pakistan Problem," telling our VJ Varun Kumar to "go kill himself."
Further social media creeping on this user, led us to find confessional posts from just
days ago on Reddit's Suicide Prevention threads, with the same user posting comments
like "I have wasted 23 years of my life.
I have no friends, no girlfriend, I'm balding, I look repulsive, I've never had a kiss."
"I just want the loneliness to end.
My body hurts so bad these days.
I want the loneliness and pain to end."
The revelation humbled us here at 1Des Media to not take internet hate so personally; you
never know what the person on the other end is going through; even if they are bullies
and hateful.
It also reminds us that the South Asian community has a very bad track record on Mental Health
Awareness and Suicide Prevention.
According to the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF), South Asian
Americans—especially those between the ages of 15-24—were more likely to exhibit depressive
symptoms.
Another APIAHF report found that there was a higher rate of suicide among young South
Asian American women than the general U.S. population.
However, the report said, South Asian Americans had the lowest rate of utilization of mental
health services—which is a conclusion that should come as no surprise to anyone raised
in the Desi community.
Desi-Canadian actress Kiran Rai and filmmaker Rakhi Mutta of the YouTube Channel Ms Mutta
created the short film "Haneri" to discuss the stigma in the Punjabi Diaspora community
in Canada.
"We wanted to show Ruby depressed.
We also wanted to show her fighting her own depression internally, but we also wanted
to show the fight that's happening externally.
So whether it be people thinking that Ruby is spoiled, or that she's lazy, that someone
did black magic on her, whatever the different things we've heard in the community, we put
that into the family home so that people would be able to watch it and get a brief understanding
for not only the internal struggle, but the external struggle, and how difficult it can
be."
Both ladies have first-hand experiences with mental health and address a harsh truth: Desi
families usually are suspicious on the causes of depression or downplaying of them.
No one ever addresses the actual stigma and culture that never allows mental health to
be openly talked about, which worsens the situation and slows the potential recovery
process.
Desi-American entrepreneur Vishaal Melwani, CEO/Founder of the successful men's suits
fashion start up Combat Gent, reached out to us to share his experiences with the stigma,
stating that growing up, "us 1stgeneration American born Desis, grew up with the idea
that the word "depression" could be solved by a quick back slap to the head."
Vishaal states that the push for rapid success and hyper growth causes burn out, and shows
similar parallels in the Desi Diaspora community, which is known for encouraging academic and
professional successes at any cost.
As a supporter of organizations that address mental health in our community, Vishaal stated:
"I know too many Desi CEOs who have to go far outside of their local community and families
to find help, because they fear judgment by the people they love and are closest to."
