West Brom news: Jay Rodriguez reacts to England claims from Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard - Duration: 5:17.West Brom news: Jay Rodriguez reacts to England claims from Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard
Jay Rodriguez was too modest to say it as strongly as the former and England captain, but if he continues in this form he could find himself on the way to this summer's World Cup.
Three Lions coach Gareth Southgate was at Anfield to see him score two goals in a 3-2 victory that booked the Baggies a spot in the fifth round.
The shock win was overshadowed by the debate over the Video Assistant Referee, but the discussion in May could be about Rodriguez being Harry Kane's back-up in Russia.
"Steven Gerrard is a legend and you look up to players like that," said Rodriguez.
"It's amazing, I'm really chuffed about that.
"You'd be lying if you were a player and never thought there is a World Cup at the end of the season and you weren't looking towards that.
"You've got to aspire to the highest level you can and that is representing your country at a World Cup.
For me that is an amazing dream.
To get there I have to continue to work hard.".
Rodriguez has scored five goals in his last six appearances which is his best run of form since he ruptured knee ligaments in 2014 for Southampton which ended his World Cup dream that year.
"The darkest days when you're injured, I've been lucky to have a wife, family and friends who stick by me," said Rodriguez, who has a solitary cap.
"This is my end goal – to be scoring at Anfield is something I've always dreamed of as a kid.
"When you are in the gym and miles away from coming back these are the times you look to and you are happy with.
He is still facing an FA investigation after an allegation of racism by Watford defender Gaetan Bong, but has not allowed it to affect him on the pitch so far.
His first goal was a fierce strike from the edge of the area in just the seventh minute.
It came 71 seconds after Roberto Firmino had put Liverpool ahead with a delightful chip after Jonny Evans' hesitation allowed Mohamed Salah in, only for his shot to be saved by Ben Foster before it fell to his team-mate.
Rodriguez's second was more about a forward's instinct to be in the right place at the right time as he tapped in Kieran Gibbs' low cross in the 11th minute.
VAR then caused chaos as first referee Craig Pawson was alerted to Gareth Barry blocking Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet in an offside position when Craig Dawson headed home Chris Brunt's corner.
Then there was a delay of almost four minutes when Salah went down in the box under a challenge from Jake Liverpool with Pawson not only talking advice from the VAR but also reviewing the incident on the pitch-side monitor before awarding a penalty – which Firmino fluffed, hitting the bar.
It was farcical, with Baggies boss Alan Pardew even claiming the delay caused the injuries to Gibbs and Hal Robson-Kanu, who both failed to make the end of the half.
"It's quite a big delay and quite strange to have that in the game," said Dawson.
"It's good when it works but it's bad when it doesn't.
Obviously it's that delay which is the issue.".
Dawson celebrated West Brom's third when it eventually came by making a TV signal as Pawson went to the VAR again, to see he was onside when his strike was turned into the net by Reds defender Joel Matip.
Salah got one back for Liverpool with 12 minutes left but there was no comeback after a pitiful display from a side that beat Manchester City on the same turf two weeks ago.
Now their only hope of silverware this season is in the Champions League.
But without Philippe Coutinho and with a leaky defence despite £75m Virgil van Dijk's arrival, that is barely even a long shot.

BREAKING NEWS About Hillary Clinton… SHE ACTUALLY DID IT AND HERE'S THE PROOF!!!- BreakingNews24 - Duration: 22:06.BREAKING NEWS About Hillary Clinton…
SHE ACTUALLY DID IT AND HERE'S THE PROOF!!!
Liberal feminist icon and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton protected one of
her senior advisers during her 2008 presidential campaign after he was accused of repeatedly
sexually harassing a young staffer, according to a bombshell new report in The New York
Times.
The report, supposedly sourced by four different people familiar with the matter, details the
allegations against Clinton faith adviser Burns Strider and the shocking fact that after
his young subordinate came forward, Clinton herself apparently stepped in to keep him
on her campaign while moving his alleged victim elsewhere.
The Times wrote:
Mrs. Clinton's campaign manager at the time recommended that she fire the adviser, Burns
Strider.
But Mrs. Clinton did not.
Instead, Mr. Strider was docked several weeks of pay and ordered to undergo counseling,
and the young woman was moved to a new job.
Mr. Strider, who was Mrs. Clinton's faith adviser, a co-founder of the American Values
Network, and sent the candidate scripture readings every morning for months during the
campaign, was hired five years later to lead an independent group that supported Mrs. Clinton's
2016 candidacy, Correct the Record, which was created by a close Clinton ally, David
Brock.
He was fired after several months for workplace issues, including allegations that he harassed
a young female aide, according to three people close to Correct the Record's management.
Mr. Strider did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Those familiar with the accounts said that, over the years, a number of advisers urged
Mrs. Clinton to sever ties with Mr. Strider, and people familiar with what took place did
not want to see Mrs. Clinton blamed for the misconduct of men she was close to.
The allegations that Clinton specifically helped cover up sexual harassment while remaining
close friends with the alleged attacker come at a time when women across industries throughout
the country are coming forward with their stories of abuse and, in many cases, coverup
afterwards.
The woman's experience and the reaction to it have not been previously reported.
Until now, former Clinton associates were unwilling to discuss the events for publication.
But that changed in the wake of the #MeToo movement, in which dozens of men across the
country and across different industries, have been fired or suspended for sexual misconduct.
The complaint against Mr. Strider was made by a 30-year-old woman who shared an office
with him.
She told a campaign official that Mr. Strider had rubbed her shoulders inappropriately,
kissed her on the forehead and sent her a string of suggestive emails, including at
least one during the night, according to three former campaign officials familiar with what
took place.
The complaint was taken to Ms. Doyle, the campaign manager, who approached Mrs. Clinton
and urged that Mr. Strider, who was married at the time, be fired, according to the officials
familiar with what took place.
Mrs. Clinton said she did not want to, and instead he remained on her staff.
So not only did Clinton herself protect Strider, her own staff, who were completely aware of
his conduct, refused to even speak about it for almost 10 years in order to protect Hillary
and her political ambitions.
This is the Clinton machine at its finest folks and once again destroys the false media
narrative surrounding who Hillary Clinton the person actually is.
One can imagine that Clinton operatives within the media will soon begin to downplay this
shocking report while somehow blaming Donald Trump.
Mark it down.
This will happen.
