Klabin is a Brazilian company
with the largest paper mill in the country
and it is one of the largest packaging manufacturers in the world
and it is in the home of all Brazilians.
Case Study - KLABIN
In total it has about 500,000 hectares located in 3 states,
which represents approximately 60,000 football fields.
Taking care of a forest of this size is our challenge.
The most recent expansion project is the PUMA unit,
where wood consumption more than doubled: from 4 to 10 million tons per year.
This represents a truck every 2 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
How can each hectare produce its potential in such a large and dispersed area?
It is not enough to know what to do, we need to perform the operations at the right time.
We would not be able to do this without an integrated system for registering multiple layers of information
such as weather, soil, roads, with a remote monitoring system...
all this in a geographic information platform
with a friendly interface so that the whole team has access to the same information at the same time,
at the same time, to be able to make the best decisions.
The digital transformation of our processes using the ArcGIS platform
with Collector, Web GIS, Survey123 and Dashboard,
helps us to take care of each tree and forest as if they were unique
This is only the beginning of our digital transformation journey.
We realized the value of the ArcGIS platform at Klabin,
when we incorporate it into the technological strategic portfolio of the forest business.
We used geographic intelligence for leveraging our strategy,
identifying approximately 800,000 hectares of forest planted in the surroundings of Klabin units.
The solution developed in the ArcGIS platform
allows us to identify genus, Pinus and Eucalyptus,
to determine the ages of settlement,
the distance from the forests to the factory,
the access of that information by our personnel
and mainly it allows the reduction of execution time by 50%.
An interesting point is the monitoring and digital transformation
of the data collection processes in the field performed by quality and operations.
The use of applications and forms facilitates the collection of this data,
as well as the location and geographical delimitation of all forest operations deviations.
This makes it easier to handle data faster.
What was once accomplished in a few days, today can be accomplished in a few hours.
Satellite image monitoring implemented using the ArcGIS platform
is providing greater control of these assets
and this ensures that we can define actions that result in better forest conditions.
An example of this is the waiting time between one cycle and another,
which is reducing more and more with the identification of idle areas
so we can optimize the soil use.
There is an integration with SAP
that enables the automation of updates
as well as the availability of a geographical BI.
We develop a web application integrating our ERP system and our cartographic database
to compare the information of our field wood stock, with satellite image monitoring
This allows us to periodically check in a web application
whether the stock of timber registered in the ERP system exists in the field and what its location is
Besides the economic savings, we improve the processes time and safety of our employees
Companies like Klabin increasingly need
to integrate their processes and make information available in real time
The ArcGIS platform allows just that,
to reduce the distance between the forest and the office.
We dedicate studies for the definition and construction of an IT architecture
for the adequate technological support.
However, the great differential was the joint action
between the information technology and GIS exploration teams
This allowed us to increase the gains in the forest processes management
We are only at the beginning of the implementation
and we estimate earnings of about USD 300,000.
Our experience in the first year gives us the confidence
that the gains in reducing staff displacement,
better use of areas and forestry monitoring
will be several millions a year as we explore the full potential of this platform.
