Hello everyone and welcome on De Papier et de Rêves' channel !
I'm Ursula and i'll be painting with you a view of Stockholm
My goal for this watercolor is to simplify the shapes because my reference image is quite complex
And my second goal is to try reproduce a vibe rather than what i see on my picture
i'll be painting this "vibe" with only three colors in my palette
Phtalo turquoise, Ultramarine violet and Quinacridone gold
Each time i use one of this three colors, i mix it with a tiny bit of one of the other two
to bring more interest to it and tone it down.
For example, when i painted my sky with Phtalo turquoise, i've added a touch of Ultramarine violet
And it changes the color to a more blu-ish slightly grey-ish color rather than what i would have get normally.
With this first layer i give the first impression, vibe to my painting
I'm not using realistic colors but i'm hopping that they will show the feeling of magic i feel when i see this view
So i placed my colors in the right place
i even take back a little bit of Quinacridone gold in order to get some volume in this first shape
My focal point will be this yellow shape which represent the Riddarholmen island
But in my reference image i can see an other island on the right side, Södermalm
So i will depict it with more cooler tone of colors and with way less precision than the other island
I'm not attempting to paint every house and building on this island, i'm just painting a shape with some light and dark in it.
In the same way, for the water i can see on my reference image in the foreground, i'm not detailing it
i just give a feeling, some textures and that's it
i'm doing the same for the sky, a small cloud, some feeling of texture to give it more interest and that's it
i'm working now on the most detailed area in my painting which will be my focus point
i start to add some shadows on the buildings to help me distinguish one from another
in my reference image they overlapping each other and it's hard to single them out
So this step is essential to set them appart.
For this shadow, i'm using quinacridone gold with a tiny bit of ultramarine violet, to tone down and darken the color.
As my painting is quite small, i'm trying not painting too much details, but painting a feeling
And i pay more attention to the shapes of the buildings
Before painting with watercolor i've drawn a quick sketch on my paper and followed it during the first layer
I know that there's mistakes in the perspective (i'm bad at it ;)), but it doesn't matter
I'm trying to paint what i see and i don't mind if there's mistakes, it's not a big deal !
I focus more on the recognizable elements in my picture which are this bell tower i'm painting right now, but that's it.
i've spend a lot of time on this building and i've painted a lot of layers, maybe more than i needed to
but i didn't want to get too dark too soon and regret it after
i've created this darker color by mixing my three colors : phtalo turquoise, ultramarine violet and quinacridone gold
i'm using this darker color to paint the roofs, they will make this image more recognizable (i hope)
i'm not being precise a this step : the roofs are just one brush strockes
and it will "erase" all the little mistakes i've made in perspective during my first drawing.
Again, my goal isn't painting exactly what i see like copying reality
but i want to paint the feeling i feel when i see this view
i'm adding now more definition in the buildings
and to do that i'm adding layers of quinacridone gold in different density according to the buidings in order to bring them out
i'm adding also some quinacridone gold in other places in my picture to create unity
for example in the right area of my painting in the Södermalm island
and also in the bottom part, in the water in order to bind all the elements together
And as there already is some phtalo turquoise and ultramarine violet in the roof's color
all the color are resonated with each other in different places
let's talk about supplies ! So i've used an Escoda Versatil nº12 round
and an Escoda Versatil nº6
For the colors i've used Phtalo turquoise
Ultramarine violet
And Quinacridone gold
i've worked with very limited supplies to help me concentrate on the image only
And for the paper i've used Arches rough
I'm adding now some details in my painting, i'm suggesting some buildings in the right island
i'm adding more volume and shadows to the roofs and some contraste between the buildings and the water
this small details are not very important alone, but together they will create a coherent painting
Last, i'm adding some bell tower in a very light blue to create some depth and suggesting the rest of the city
This painting is now finished ! Thank you for watching, i hope you've enjoyed it !
