I turn off my phone...
and I'm looking around and I say:
I just got a call from PostNL...
And I get to design a stamp.
It was on my bucket list to design a stamp.
I don't know if everyone has a bucket list, but I do.
And designing a stamp was on there.
I initially thought: well, how hard can it be?
You're making a tiny cover.
But it's actually very different.
Especially at Volkskrant Magazine you constantly have that pressure and that stress.
When you're done, you push that button and it's off to the printers and then...
the next one awaits.
So it just keeps going.
But we had a few months for those stamps.
So you have time to set it aside and pick it up again.
And that's really when you get the best results.
I had the idea pretty quickly.
This is the very first sketch, this is circle from the logo...
and the logo, the mask, is the visitor.
That became my starting point.
Is the work of art that you see the visitor, or is it an artifact?
I wanted to combine the two.
It's really great to get to design something so small.
And you're part of an illustrious list of the best designers in The Netherlands.
They're all people I admire.
I have this in my living room.
These are the classics by Wim Crouwel.
I had him sign these stamps when I met him once.
So that's really a thing.
A lot of designers want to move on to the next thing after they put something out there.
That's not me.
It's also nice to achieve a certain quality every week.
And to repeat that every week.
At least, I get a lot of satisfaction from that.
So I certainly can keep going.
No, you're not rid of me yet.
