"My boyfriend is a zombie, he's a living dead"
"who came back from the other world to be with me"
Hi people! I look pretty, huh? That's because it maches today's genre.
Last week I couldn't give you a video because I had a molar removed and
spent the day talking like this, and the other days I couldn't record,
so I uploaded some Speedpaint. But today not only I bring one book, but
a whole series that are still on the writing. I have
the first three books, which in my opinion closed really well a posible
initial trilogy. But if you want to know more of the story, you can keep
reading the next ones and have more, but you won't be displeased if
you just stop after the third one as I did, though... I'm also reading the
fourth one. But I'm rambling. Today's books are LOS CAMINANTES by Carlos Sisí.
What are LOS CAMINANTES about? Zombies, duh. But the great thing about
Los Caminantes isn't only the humanity of its characters, but that all the action,
at least during the first 2 books, takes place in Málaga (city/province in Southern Spain)
The 3rd one is even cooler, because, understand me, it takes place in
Granada, particularly in the Alhambra. Look at the amazing cover, it's great.
Here's the Alhambra on fire and helycopters, so cool.
The book covers are a work of art. Allow me to dedicate a moment to
show you the covers because they rock. Look closer.
This is the first one, Los Caminantes. See, there's a zombie of the frenzied type: at first
they might be lethargic, but if you pester them or they are stimulated, they
evolve until becoming the kind of zombie that runs and screams and
scares you to death. This is the second part, Los Caminantes: Necrópolis. Here's
the greatest villain in the series, whom everyone hates with
equal passion: Father Isidro, a fun character, a fanatic who's
completely deranged. This makes him
even more interesting. Here he is with his smile... Renditions of
Father Isidro in art are awesome. You can see here the streets of Málaga, the
bloodied hand... Whoever made the
cover designs did a great job. The images are great. "Cover design: Alejandro Colucci"
Okay, congratulations, Alejandro; you worked gloriously in this. Here's the third one,
the one that happens in Granada, I won't tell you why.
Los Caminantes: Hades Nebula. Here's another frenzied zombie, the Alhambra
on fire, all so epic... though the back cover is just a plain color.
LOS CAMINANTES has been around since 2009,
since The Walking Dead show came out and people realized that
zombies were cool and profitable, and thus more and more
books and anthologies written by Spanish authors with a taste for zombies appeared.
This trend gave us series as impressive as LOS CAMINANTES and,
for example --what was the name of this trilogy by Manel Loureiro, about Galician zombies...? Ah yes,
Apocalipsis Z. Whenever you hear talking about LOS CAMINANTES by
Carlos Sisí, most of the times you'll see people
comparing it to the trilogy Apocalipsis Z by Manel Loureiro.
I find it very unfair to compare Sisí's books to Manel's and
viceversa, because yes, both are about zombies, zombies
in Spain, so yeah, instead of American tropes,
such as everybody owning guns and houses not having strong garden walls,
for example, here in Spain the zombie apocalypse would be slightly different
and people would survive in other ways. That's what these two series
with great characters and suspense have in common; aside of that,
they're very different and here enters
your personal taste. Some people like Manel Loureiro, others
prefer Sisí, but I'd recommend many to shut up a bit
instead of comparing both so harshly, because comparisons become
rudeness and it's unfair to the writers. I love both series the same and think
that each one has its virtues and flaws, strengthes and weaknesses.
It depends entirely on what you prefer as a reader... but today we're talking
about Carlos Sisí, so we'll leave Manel Loureiro for some other day,
because I have his novels too. There's a thing I really like about Carlos Sisí:
this man, despite writing horror (true
horror, thriller and suspense) this man is so... cinnamon roll,
you know? And he writes just as I intuit he is. Perhaps that's what
throws some readers off: they want horror novels in the style of
Stephen King, where everything is so serious, sick, gloomy and dry, and I don't know,
that's a matter of taste. I like the characters I'm reading about to feel
like real people, and not straight out of an 80s' American action movie, you know?
And now, ramblings aside, I'll read the synopsis of the first book:
"THE WALKERS: A heartbreaking tale compiling the last days of Civilization
as we know it. After surviving the horrible
pandemic that brings the dead back to life,
survivors face the challenge of getting to the end of each day alive.
With a straight, visual language, the novel tells how the fates of these
survivors become woven together around a mysterious character,
Father Isidro. THE WALKERS immerses us in an environment
of awful psychological pressure, exploring the darkness within the human soul
as it faces its worst nightmares."
I can't read the synopsis of the following books, because then
there'd be spoilers. Not brutal spoilers,
but I'd ruin a bit of your fun. Suffice to say that the second book continues
the story of the 1st in the same place; and in the third one, for reasons
I won't spoil, the survivors must go to Granada, to the Alhambra,
an old Muslim fortress of which us Granadines are very
proud, and which has become a natural fortress against
zombies. Though things are not as great as our survivors expected... very interesting.
The fourth book takes place in Barcelona, and it's named Los Caminantes: Aeternum.
Here's the cover... I still haven't finished this one,
I'm halfway through; and I just found out that there's a fifth one, named
Los Caminantes: Tempus Fugit, and rumour has it that it has a tremendous
plot twist. I don't know... Now I feel like running to finish the 4th one so I can
get to the 5th. And they say there's a 6th one coming out... I had no idea these series could be this long!
But well, I'll have to keep up to date.
If you're interested in this style, but are not fully sold on the idea of zombies,
I tell you that Carlos Sisí is a very prolific author. He wrote, for example, a book
I'm devouring now, named ALMA, which is about supernatural stuff and
the Other Side, and I'm loving it. To know more about the writer, his series and
all the other books he's written, go to LOSCAMINANTES.NET
a nice site where you can see all his books
and pick the one you like the most. LOS CAMINANTES had such positive national
reception, there's even Survival Zombie gymkhanas
here in Spain. In fact, I went to one and had a hell of a time. It was in Granada,
and all the participants gathered at night in the bullfighting plaza... We were all equipped,
wearing green neckwarmers they gave us, to be recognized as
participants of the gymkhana, carrying our backpacks, they gave us stickers and all.
So, we bought tickets and went there, my boyfriend, my brother,
his brother-in-law and I to the gymkhana. So, they gathered
us all in the bullfighting plaza of Granada, and there they did a play
presented by the writer Carlos Sisí in person,
and he said something like "Well, welcome to the gymkhana, thank you so much for coming" and he seemed like
such a cinnamon roll... and then a play started, with actors
dressed up as some of the most important characters, like
Father Isidro. There was another character who told us
that we were the last survivors of the zombie apocalypse, and we had
to hurry up before the military arrived... and then the soldiers came
and staged a coup, started "shooting" and there were
even blood special effects... and then the soldiers told us that only those who could
gather the most supplies and pass the most tests would survive, and to hell with
the rest in this godforsaken city. It was all so cool, there were
shooting effects... and then, when the theater play
was over, we were lead outside, and there were people characterized as
Carlos Sisí's horrible zombies.
And I swear you got so into the gymkhana that you experienced fear and became
kinda paranoid, adrenaline rushing. We ran all across
the city of Granada, running because there were entire groups of zombies...
There were hordes of zombie actors!
These zombies would corner us where we least expected it,
they were all around Granada, and you had to be so careful, because
you were walking through people unrelated to the gymkhana, of course, but
turned out that, between two passerbys, some old couple just taking a walk,
you spotted a zombie with its distinctive red neckwarmer (that's how you distinguished them, besides their makeup)
and if they touched you, you became infected and had two options: to be
applied makeup and join the zombie hordes to scare,
chase and "infect" the other participants, or you...
Well, you could just quit whenever you wanted...
or you had to go to Granada's butt, to a faaaaraway place,
to get an "antidote injection", and then you could resume the gymkhana as
a survivor. Yeah, they "killed" me
at Plaza Trinidad, a group of four threw me and touched me gently,
and thus I became a zombie, and we had to go all the way up
so I could get the "injection" and then walk down again to keep playing the trials.
My brother was having the time of his life, he was the first to plunge into the dark rooms,
he was the best of our group in passing the tests... it was awesome. Oh, and another cool thing
was that there were different kinds of zombies, see? The most "dangerous" were
the Zetas. They wore a neon yellow-orange (I can't remember) neckwarmer.
I was told that the organizers would recruit these actors
among the fastest runners in Athletism Schools.
These guys were brought to the gymkhana and played as Zetas: the zombies that
howl and run after people like crazy. So yeah, these actors would give you
the running of your life. So, we were walking through some place,
like the Paseo de los Tristes, looking for the next spot we
had to go to, to pass a new test or find whatever trinket, and suddenly, at
the bottom of the street, you glimpse a flash of neon yellow or orange,
and hear "BUOOOOH", a terrible scream; and then you shit your pants,
look again and see a guy with a neon-colored neckwarmer running to you, his arms
tautened backwards and his head bending forward, with makeup as if his face had exploded with blood
and guts, and yeah, you know it's a gymkhana and it's all fake,
but your reptilian brain says "screw it" and you run away, scared shitless,
okay? It was great. Even when the gymkhana was over and
the "military" did their play and such, the four of us were driving back home
at 2-3 in the morning, and my heart was still pounding.
It was so much fun. I hope they host many more gymkhanas and repeat
in Granada, because we had such a good time. This was
today's book, one of my favorite zombie
series: LOS CAMINANTES by Carlos Sisí. That's all for today,
I hope you enjoyed the video and got interested in the books.
Thank you so much for watching me one more week. Bye-bye! :D
