CONVERSATION WITH AN EDITORIAL CARTOONIST
SECOND PART
THE CROSSING OF MOHAMED
NONO TAKES UP PENS
So when we crossed the Turkish borders
we were able to breathe a little bit
Because we were afraid of this stage which was difficult
there were other families who came in the same situation
especially a family who came from Damascus with their children
It was an opportunity to see what was happening in other cities
They told us how they lived also through hard times
and how they could save their lives to get to Istanbul
(What was your feeling when leaving Aleppo?)
It's a difficult feeling...because for me, it wasn't...it was unthinkable for me to leave Aleppo
it's the city where I was born .... the city where I invested in my life
where I built my house ... where there are all the family
we never imagined that we'll get to this point
when I received this threat, I was really disturbed
I didn't have a choice, so I had to save my life
my life and the life of my children
(How did you prepare for this crossing?)
In fact, our difficulty was to leave Aleppo at the start and then ...
to cross areas where there were groups, we didn't know who they were !
it was really for us, the most difficult step
We found a smuggler who knew these people ... he paid every time!
(Are you the smuggler? Do you have a GPS?) we took circuitous routes
(Are you the smuggler? Do you have a GPS?) From our house in Aleppo to Turkish borders, there are about 50 Km
Before the events, we were taking this road to go to Turkey; in one hour maximum.
But this time the road took 24 hours!
Once, there was a government roadblock, the smuggler apparently did not pay enough money
(Are you the smuggler? Do you have a GPS?) they fired bullets next to your car ...it's scared us
(Are you the smuggler? Do you have a GPS?) it was very tough times...very tough times
(GPS is me! Guide Practical to Survival!!) there were roadblocks, once we passed the regime's forces;
(GPS is me! Guide Practical to Survival!!) there were armed groups
(GPS is me! Guide Practical to Survival!!)
when we crossed the Turkish borders, I said oh.. Really, we were saved...
