Show of faith? I'm hooked! Worshippers display their devotion by piercing skin with metal rods and barbs as they seek blessings and offer thanks in Hindu festival

Hundreds of thousands of Hindus across Malaysia and India celebrated the annual Thaipusam festival, with a bright, colourful display. But some more extreme worshippers pierced their skin with hooks and skewers to show devotion to the deity Murugan.

Thaipusam officially commemorates the day when, according to Hinduism, the goddess Pavarthi gave her son Lord Murugan a lance to slay evil demons. It is observed mainly in countries with a significant ethnic Tamil population, including Malaysia and neighbouring Singapore.

Many devotees carried prayer offerings known as kavadi and balanced milk pots on their heads with their hands as they ascended.

Others pierced their faces with tridents and rods or hung multiple hooks and chains from their skin in an act of penance. People from all around the world travel to the different ceremonies to offer thanks and to seek blessings.

Hundreds of thousands met on the Batu Caves - an important religious site for Tamil Hindus on Kuala Lumpurs outskirts - with many walking (pictured) up to 10 hours to the site, capped by a final 272-step climb to its limestone hilltop shrine.

What is the festival of Thaipusam and why is it celebrated?  Thaipusam is a long-standing ceremony that is held each year during the full moon in the tenth month of the Hindu calendar - most likely falling between mid-January to mid-February.

It is marked in some countries, such as Malaysia, as a public holiday. Millions of Hindu devotees travel from across the world to take part in one of the ceremonies, offering their thanks and seeking blessings.

Some pierce their tongues with skewers and carry a wooden kavadi decorated with flowers and peacock feathers balanced on their shoulders. Other devotees carry spiked kavadis that require elaborate preparation.

The celebration usually lasts two days but it isnt a fleeting affair for devotees as they must exercise abstinence for 48 days leading up to the festival.

Prior to Thaipusam, devotees will typically hold daily prayer sessions, abstain from sex and stick to a strict vegetarian diet for weeks. The colourful celebration in Malaysia is watched by around one and a half million people each year.

More than a million Hindus in Malaysia celebrated the colourful Thaipusam festival on Wednesday (January 31) by gathering at a temple in an offering to the deity Murugan.

Hindu devotees also perform a ritual bath during the Thaipusam festival as not all worshippers decide to show their devotion in extreme ways.

Once the devotees have climbed the steep steps to the Batu Caves and enter inside the shrine, the devotees will have a dance before an image of the deity to end their pilgrimage.

The devotees can then unhook thier kavadis and say their final prayers, in the hope they return home refreshed.    .

Worshippers who go to these extremes usually insist that they dont feel any pain as they are in a spiritual trance which brings them closer to Lord Murugan. The trance is induced by chanting, drumming and incense.

Members News Minute - SDI Educators - Duration: 2:03.

SDI instructors and potential SDI professionals often hear the term

flexible teaching, but what does this really mean?

So let's take a minute to really look at this. When you take a look at our

standards, they're for the most part, a simple list of dives and minimum standards.

Minimums are just that. Minimum requirements for the course completion.

Those are designed to accommodate the most prepared and focused of students.

Our instructors have the flexibility to add relevant skills or academics or even

repeat skills or academics to best benefit students in the class. There is

one major reason this is done. To create educators instead of instructors.

We don't require skills 1 through 3 on dive one or anything like that

because our course can reasonably accommodate the most prepared student

and the least prepared student. Our instructors have the ultimate discretion

to craft their students' educational opportunity. Have a student who has

difficulty with mask skills? Build their confidence with success on other skills

and then come back to that. Have a student who gets neutrally buoyant

instantly? Integrate some combo skills with swimming into the challenge.

Have some engineers in the nitrox class who breezed through the calculations?

Don't waste time over teaching. Switch gears to keep them engaged and learning.

So how do you totally embrace this system of teaching? Never teach the same

class twice, keep yourself excited by learning new topics in innovative ways,

keep your students excited by challenging them in fun ways and

remember to train divers, not just people that do skills. Keep those four points in

mind and customize your training programs to fit your needs.

Whether you're a new or old SDI instructor, we have tools like slates and instructor

guides to help you organize your programs.
