Wrestling is a physically demanding sport
Wrestlers can be considered high-performance athletes
Sometimes
with busy schedules and high chances of suffering injuries
these athletes dedicate their whole lives to step up to fight in the wrestling ring
Some of them for their joy and love to the sport, and others do it out of necessity
there exists another category which includes both of them and it's not necessarily a good one.
Some wrestlers have been in the business for so long that they are considered legends
however, some of them reach extreme heights and they kept fighting even if their bodies couldn't handle the physical demand and their popularity hit rock bottom.
With this video, I´m not trying to criticize
but a reflection based exclusively from my point of view and personal experiences
Just like me, I would love if you left your opinion in the comment section
Without further ado, let's begin
As years have passed, wrestling has given us idols
role models that excited us and some of them still amaze us with every move, with every jump or every apparition they made
Some of them have won the title of legends
reaching to the very top, hanging there and, eventually, retiring at the prime of their careers
As an example of this, we have wrestling icons such as Shawn Michaels or Stone Cold Steve Austin
Big names of wrestling that knew the right moment to put an end to their careers
handling their prestige until their very last match
Nevertheless, today we won't talk about them, but their opposites
big wrestling icons that unfortunately as every day passes, they manage to destroy their past image
fighting despite their versed age, their little to no remaining physical health and even medical restrictions
Big names from Mexican wrestling like Mil Máscaras, Canek o Rayo de Jalisco Jr
still appear in little wrestling events even when they are not capable of doing what they had been able to do once
Where is that Mil Máscaras that conquered every country he wrestled in?
Where is the great prince Maya Canek and his majestic bodyslam to Andre the Giant
Where is Rayo de Jalisco Jr that will continue the legacy that was passed on to him
giving us one of the best mask vs mask fights against Cien Caras?
Nowadays, they are just a little reminder of the great stories that were told to us.
Hold on, I´m not blaming them for not giving us big fights, age forgives no one
However, from my point of view, hanging on to doing something even when you know it can't be done like the good old days
was the biggest mistake the wrestlers previously named and many others made
Of course, it would be unfair to generalize
because even for their age, there are many wrestlers that still deliver great and entertaining fights
just like Negro Casas or Jushin Thunder Liger
which are the complete opposite of the before mentioned
because their physical condition still allows them to keep their reputation between the ropes and not ruin their image with mediocre or terrible performances
There is one particular case which is The Undertaker
, WWE legend and wrestling in general, however that would be for another video
The main question here is: Why do they keep doing it?
if they already have a legacy, a big name inside wrestling, why do they keep dragging their name even more?
I don't want to criticize them nor go against them
however, it seems to me that after a long and successful career, retirement is what a wrestler anticipates the most
a homage to their names and the moment in which their stories are written in the books and magazines as one of the greatest to ever live
Then, it's here where the question emerges, had they ever thought of retiring?
Fame and success doesn't last forever
nor their physical health
but it seems that these wrestlers are already considered legends, they didn't understand it this way
And for me and many other wrestling fans, it really hurts to see that historic hero from wrestling
that once was in his prime
striving to keep himself up in the ring
with no mobility and acting clumsy, not being able to work a punch, a hold or any other movement they were able to do in the past
It isn't the same anymore
In conclusion, reminding you that this is merely my point of view
it seems to me that the great names of wrestling must retire being that, great
I can comprehend to a certain degree that wrestlers love their job
that they love it as much as we love this sport, and it's alright
Nevertheless, making an effort to keep fighting, trying to get back to their years of glory, it is never going to happen
Ego? Maybe, but we can not be sure of anything
but we can say that wrestlers themselves destroy their own prestige and most importantly, their masks
Showing in smaller arenas, in front of a crowd that slowly forgets the name of the wrestler that is right in front of them
from the wrestler that can barely move
that is injury-prone, that went from spectacular dives and strength demonstrations
to just mediocre execution at the ring
Where will these wrestlers end up once no one will sign them?
What will go through their minds when not even the smallest local wrestling event has any interest in hosting them?
We don't know, but we can't expect anything good
As time keeps going, athletes turn older, dumber and more lethargic
If they can't accept that, then it will be difficult to take them seriously one more time.
