Waching daily Mar 30 2018

Hi I'm Michelle Melby And I'm Tom Milbourn

Our greatest responsibility is to serve our Northwest communities.

We are extremely proud of the quality, balanced journalism that ABC6 News produces.

But we're concerned about the troubling trend of irresponsible, one sided news stories plaguing

our country.

The sharing of biased and false news has become all too common on social media.

More alarming, some media outlets publish these same fake stories... stories that just

aren't true, without checking facts first.

Unfortunately, some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal

bias and agenda to control 'exactly what people think'

This is extremely dangerous to a democracy.

At News Channel 3 it's our responsibility to pursue and report the truth.

We understand truth is neither politically 'left nor right.'

Our commitment to factual reporting is the foundation of our credibility, now more than

ever.

But we are human and sometimes our reporting might fall short.

If you believe our coverage is unfair please reach out through out website.

We value your comments.

We will respond back to you.

We work very hard to seek the truth and strive to be fair, balanced and factual.

We consider it our honor, privilege to responsibly deliver the news every day.

Thank you for watching and we appreciate your feedback.

North Korean Defectors Show Signs Of Possible Radiation Exposure

At least four North Korean defectors have shown symptoms consistent with radiation exposure, including chromosomal abnormalities, South Korea's Unification Ministry said Wednesday.

The four defectors were among a group of 30 refugees who agreed to be tested, out of a total of 114 defectors from the region near North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear site.

All 30 hail from the North Korean region of Kilju, where the country has conducted six underground nuclear bomb tests since 2006.

All of those tested fled North Korea before the country's fourth nuclear test in January 2016.

Ministry officials who spoke with South Korea's Yonhap News Agency cautioned that the tests, while indicative of radiation exposure, weren't necessarily definitive.

Other environmental factors like age and smoking could also cause similar damage.

"The possibility of radiation exposure can be suspected," the unnamed official said, "but it has not been verified whether nuclear tests affected the person as there is a lack of information assessing living environments in North Korea." KIM WON-JIN via Getty Images North Korean soldiers attend a mass rally in Pyongyang to celebrate North Koreas declaration on Nov. 29 it had achieved full nuclear statehood.

The accounts nonetheless align with anecdotal tales from Kilju defectors, who described a heavily contaminated region in interviews with The Research Association of Vision of North Korea earlier this year.

Residents in the area told the group that after the sixth nuclear test, some 80 percent of the trees planted in the area have died, underground wells have dried up and babies have been born with health defects.

That's consistent with what could be expected from repeated underground nuclear explosions, Suh Kyun-ryul, a professor of nuclear engineering at Seoul National University, told the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo.

"Due to the collapsed ground layer, fissures must have formed underneath, leading to contamination of the underground layer and water supply." After North Korea's sixth and largest nuclear test on Sept.

3, unnamed sources told the Japanese TV broadcaster Asahi a collapsed tunnel at the Punggye-ri site potentially killed as many as 200 people.     .

Thousands March In France Over The Murder Of An 85-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor

Thousands took to the streets across France on Wednesday to decry the murder of an 85-year-old Holocaust survivor that authorities have linked to anti-Semitism.

The silent marches, the largest of which took place in Paris, were held in tribute to Mireille Knoll, who escaped a roundup of Jews in Paris at the height of World War II.

She fled to Europe and Canada before returning to France after the end of the war, where she lived for the remainder of her life.

She was found dead in her apartment last week, and authorities said she was stabbed 11 times before her apartment was set on fire.

Two men, ages 22 and 29, have been arrested and preliminarily charged with murder with anti-Semitic motives.

"I thought I was going to die on the spot.

I cried all the tears in my body and I thought of her.

She didn't deserve this," her son, Daniel Knoll, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

"How can one do that to anybody?" French leaders quickly urged citizens to participate in marches this week to combat a growing wave of xenophobia across France.

In Paris, politicians were joined by thousands of people who marched from the city's Place de la Nation to Knoll's apartment.

Earlier in the day Knoll's funeral was attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, who denounced the "barbaric" motives behind the attack.

″[The attackers] murdered an innocent and vulnerable woman because she was Jewish, and in doing so profaned our sacred values and our history," Macron said.

But the evening's silent tribute was interrupted by the appearance of far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who defied the wishes of Jewish groups who had asked her not to attend.  Gonzalo Fuentes / Reuters Marine Le Pen, leader of the Frances far-right party, attends the march in spite of calls for her to not come.

"Anti-Semites are over-represented in the far-left and the far-right, making those parties ones that you don't want to be associated with," Francis Kalifat, the director of Crif, an organization representing the country's Jewish groups, said before the marches, according to Agence France-Presse.

"They should first clean out their own house," he later said.

Le Pen and far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who was also asked not to attend, drew shouts of "Get out!" "Go home!" and "Nazi!" from the marchers.

"I find the behavior here undignified toward the [grieving] family," Le Pen said after she left the rally, according to AP.

"Her son said he wanted everyone there, so we are here." ALAIN JOCARD via Getty Images Politicians and others stand behind a banner as they prepare to take part in a slient march in Paris on Wednesday in memory of Mireille Knoll.

( US News ) North And South Korea Set April Date For Historic Summit - Duration: 7:16.

North And South Korea Set April Date For Historic Summit

SEOUL (Reuters) - North and South Korea will hold their first summit in more than a decade on April 27, South Korean officials said on Thursday, after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged his commitment to denuclearization as tensions ease between the old foes.   South Korean government officials announced the date of the summit after holding high-level talks with their North Korean counterparts on Thursday.

The two Koreas had agreed earlier this month to hold such a summit at the border truce village of Panmunjom when South Korean President Moon Jae-in sent a delegation to Pyongyang to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Thursday's talks were the first between the two Koreas since the delegation returned from the North.  North and South Korea have set April 27th as the date of the first summit featuring heads of state Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong Un.

Will happen at the border village of Panmunjom.

#breaking — Elise Hu (@elisewho) March 29, 2018 A joint statement from the dialogue said two Koreas would hold a working-level meeting on April 4 to discuss details for the summit, such as staffing support, security and news releases.

No details on the summit agenda were released, with Unification Minister Cho Myong-gyon saying the two sides agreed more time was needed to sort out details although they had exchanged opinions on the agenda "fully" on Thursday.

Cho said the summit agenda would largely address denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and improvement of inter-Korean relations but declined to elaborate further.

"We still have a fair number of issues to resolve on a working-level for preparations over the next month," said Ri Son Gwon, the chairman of North Korea's committee for the peaceful reunification of the country in closing remarks to the South Korean delegation.

"But if the two sides deeply understand the historic significance and meaning of this summit and give their all, we will be able to solve all problems swiftly and amicably," Ri added.

North and South Korea have experienced a significant easing in tensions since the Winter Olympics in the South in February.

They are technically still at war after the 1950-53 conflict ended with a ceasefire, not a truce.

Kim is also scheduled to meet U.S.

President Donald Trump sometime in May to discuss denuclearization, although a time and place have not been set for that summit.

Kim met Chinese President Xi Jinping in a surprise visit to Beijing this week, his first trip outside the isolated North since he came to power in 2011.

Even more surprising was Kim's pledge to denuclearize the Korean summit.

That commitment was reported by Chinese state media, although North Korea's official media made no mention of it, or Kim's anticipated meeting with Trump.

The South Korean unification minister told reporters Kim's visit to China was not discussed with North Korean officials on Thursday.

Trump and Kim had exchanged threats and insults in recent months.

The U.S.

leader made the equally surprising announcement earlier this month that he was prepared to meet Kim to discuss the crisis over Pyongyang's development of nuclear weapons capable of hitting the United States.

The North Korean leader's engagement with the international community has sparked speculation that he may try to meet other leaders.

Japan's Asahi newspaper said on Thursday Japan had sounded out the North Korean government about a bilateral summit.

Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono left open the possibility that Shinzo Abe might meet Kim at some point.

Kono said in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday that Japan was closely watching preparations for the North-South Korean summit and the Trump-Kim meeting.

Chinese President Xi Jinping promised Beijing would uphold its friendship with North Korea after his meeting with Kim.

Trump wrote on Twitter he had received a message from Xi on Tuesday night that his meeting with Kim "went very well" and that Kim looked forward to meeting the U.S.

president.

Received message last night from XI JINPING of China that his meeting with KIM JONG UN went very well and that KIM looks forward to his meeting with me.

In the meantime, and unfortunately, maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost! — Donald J.

Ecuador Cuts Off WikiLeaks Founder's Outside Communications

820   43.

Ecuador is cutting off WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's communications with the world outside the London embassy where he's been living in asylum since 2012.

Ecuadorean officials announced Wednesday that they had enacted the limits in response to his recent social media activity, which they say jeopardizes their relationship with the U.K.

The world-famous hacker agreed in late 2017 not to send any messages that could interfere with Ecuador's relations with other nations, the announcement said.

The statement did not highlight any of Assange's offending posts.

However, in recent days Assange has tweeted about his disapproval with several countries, including the U.S., for their decision to expel Russian diplomats in response to the poisoning of a Russian ex-spy in the U.K.

earlier this month.

Toby Melville / Reuters A sign is pinned to the railings outside the Ecuadorean embassy in central London as Wikileaks founder Julian Assange goes to court again to avoid arrest in London in January.

That stipulation is part of Assange's asylum agreement with Ecuador, which has housed him in its London embassy since 2012 as he sought to avoid extradition to Sweden for an investigation into rape allegations.

Though Sweden dropped the case last year, he remains wanted by the U.K.

for breaching bail.

He has now been living in the embassy for more than five years.  Kim Dotcom, a German internet tycoon who has long been vocal of his support for Assange's freedom, urged other supporters to gather outside the embassy on Wednesday to help Assange regain his Internet connection.

On Tuesday, British foreign affairs minister Alan Duncan spoke out against Assange's ongoing asylum.

"It's about time that this miserable little worm walked out of the embassy and gave himself up to British justice," he told reporters.     .

Blast Rips Through Supermarket In Russia's St. Petersburg, 10 Hurt

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A blast ripped through a supermarket in Russia's St Petersburg on Wednesday evening, injuring at least 10 shoppers, investigators said.

The explosion was caused by a homemade bomb packed with pieces of metal with a force equivalent to 200 grammes of TNT, they said.

They have opened a criminal case on the grounds of attempted murder.

Nobody was killed in the explosion, and it was not immediately clear what the motive for it was.

Russian media reports said the bomb had been hidden in a locker where shoppers leave their belongings in a branch of the Perekrestok supermarket chain.

"All possible versions of what has happened are being worked on," Alexander Klaus, the head of St Petersburg's investigative committee, told Reuters.

"As of now, it has been established that 10 people were taken to the city's hospitals with injuries.

At the moment, the lives of those injured are not under threat." Reporting by Andrew Osborn; Editing by Alison Williams Alexander Demianchuk via Getty Images ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA - DECEMBER 27, 2017: A police officer seen by the Perekrestok supermarket in Kalinina Square.

( US News ) Urgent Medical Evacuations Trickle Out Of Syria's Besieged Eastern Ghouta Enclave - Duration: 8:18.

Urgent Medical Evacuations Trickle Out Of Syria's Besieged Eastern Ghouta Enclave

Some of the most critically ill people trapped within Syria's besieged Eastern Ghouta area near Damascus are being transported to the capital city for urgent treatment this week.

The evacuations, which come as part of a deal between the Syrian regime and rebel forces, are a grim race against time.

Multiple people approved for medical release have already died in the rebel-held enclave, which has been under government siege for four years.

One Syrian infant who had been waiting for transfer was reported dead on Wednesday, according to Mohamad Katoub, an advocacy manager for the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS).

Six-month-old Katr Alnada "was supposed to be evacuated today in the list of urgent 29 people," he wrote on Twitter. "When [a] local team reached her, they found that she died weeks ago." SAMS had coordinated with local medical workers in Syria and international humanitarian organizations, including the United Nations, earlier this year to produce a list of 29 people in Eastern Ghouta who were in desperate need of medical care.

The list included at least 18 children.

Four patients were transported to Damascus hospitals on Tuesday night, and the rest are set to be moved in the coming days.  Jaish al-Islam, a rebel faction in Eastern Ghouta, said it was releasing 29 prisoners as part of the agreement.

The government has allowed the critically ill patients to leave in exchange, Reuters reports.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, which is operating with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent to move patients to Damascus, called the evacuations "a positive step."  SAMS President Dr.

Ahmad Tarakji said there need to be more evacuations, although he is "very skeptical" that anyone beyond the 29 approved patients will be allowed to leave.

"We feel that this was a very limited step," he told HuffPost, adding that increased international pressure was likely the main reason behind the deal.

"Ghouta has been suffering from prolonged besiegement for years," he said.

"You can tell how emotional this is for the patients." #Photos : @syredcrescent volunteers together with @ICRC just started to transfer cases in need of medical care from east #Ghouta to hospitals in #Damascus after long negotiations supported by Sarc President and @federation president pic.twitter.com/MTLCGElrfS — Syrian Red Crescent (@SYRedCrescent) December 26, 2017 The people released represent just a small fraction of the current 641 critical cases in need of urgent medical attention in Eastern Ghouta, according to SAMS.

Among those on the waiting list is 9-year-old cancer patient Moayad Hamed, whose brain tumor is growing due to a lack of treatment.

Nineteen other patients have already perished.

Karim Abdel Rahman, another Syrian baby held under siege, lost his left eye during an artillery attack in Eastern Ghouta two months ago.

Photos of his injury have stoked international outrage.

"Of course I was very sad," Anas Altaan, a volunteer with the Syria Civil Defence team, told HuffPost on Wednesday.

Altaan was part of the rescue mission that rushed Rahman to a hospital.

"This child lost his eye because of someone who wants to remain in the presidency," he said, referring to Syrian President Bashar Assad.

AMER ALMOHIBANY/AFP/Getty Images Karim Abdel Rahman lost an eye and his mother in government shelling in Eastern Ghouta.

Jan Egeland, the United Nations humanitarian adviser for Syria, said last week that hundreds of people were on the priority list for medical evacuations.

"That number is going down, not because we are evacuating people but because they are dying," he said.

"We have tried now every single week for many months to get medical evacuations out, and food and other supplies in." For those left behind in Eastern Ghouta, the ratio is now less than one doctor for every four thousand people.

More than 424,000 men, women and children have been under complete siege since 2013, shortly after a sarin gas attack by regime forces claimed an estimated 1,429 lives there.

Cut off from food imports and medical aid, the residents have been eating garbage to survive. Hundreds of civilians ― more than half of them children ― have died from food and medication shortages since the start of the siege.

As Syria's government and its allies continue their blockade of Eastern Ghouta and other areas, they have pursued a "surrender or die" strategy, which "amounts to a campaign of widespread collective punishment," according to a new report from Siege Watch published this month.

The ongoing atrocities constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, the report charges.

Despite numerous ceasefire agreements and U.N. resolutions demanding unobstructed humanitarian access, armed forces loyal to Assad have continued to target civilian residential areas, including hospitals and schools, with airstrikes.

The international community's inadequate response has only emboldened the Assad regime, Siege Watch asserts.

Tarakji said he is "optimistic that we will continue to put pressure on the Syrian regime on all sides." But, he added, "people are concerned about the longevity of this process [of evacuations].

They are concerned that this will not be continued or repeated in the future."    .
