In a bedroom far, far away...! Father builds an incredible Star Wars-themed bed for his son that is shaped like the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon and hangs from the ceiling
In a bid to get his son to sleep a bit easier, one father has turned to a galaxy far far away.
Oklahoma City dad Derick Winsett, 30, has gone viral after photos of the incredible Star Wars-themed bed he made for his five-year-old son hit social media.
The stunning Millennium Flacon-style sleeping pod hangs from the ceiling and now has his little boy racing to go to bed every night.
A bedroom far, far away: An Oklahoma City dad has crafted an incredible Millennium Falcon bed for his Star Wars-obsessed son.
Quite a feat: Derick Winsett, 30, came up with the idea for the bed after taking his five-year-old son Mavrik to see The Last Jedi . Sleeping tight: The pod-shaped bed is fitted with color-changing lights on the inside.
Pictures show the interior of the pod with a double bed and television, as well as NERF guns and lightsabers on hand to fend off any bad dreams.
Derick constructed the Star Wars-themed bed after discovering that his five-year-old son Mavrick loved The Last Jedi. My wife, Kendra, had wanted to create a theme for Mavricks room and I thought Star Wars would be a fun project, he said.
I took my son to watch the Last Jedi and he fell in love with Star Wars. He is sleeping in his own bed for the first time now.
Two nights in a row he has raced to go to his own bed. One down, one to go; guess I need to start on my daughters bedroom..
Putting it together: As it would be impossible to build the entire ship in the room, Derick opted to recreate one part of the ship.
Summed up: Derick recreated the pod (left) that sits on one side of Han Solos famous ship. Up it goes: He created ceiling joists to keep the bed sitting five feet above the ground.
Putting it together: In photos of the beds progress, Dericks construction skills are on show. The sleeping pod is suspended five feet off the floor and the interior space is four feet tall, 10 feet long, and approximately five feet wide.
The interior is outfitted with color-changing lights and a fan for air circulation, making it a cosy space to sleep or just relax.
The Star Wars-themed bedroom has another clever touch. Because it would be nearly impossible to recreate the entire Millennium Falcon in a room that size, Derick opted to build just one part of the ship.
They bolted it to the ceiling joists and lined it up with a vinyl mural of the ship, created by Erik Hollander Designs and installed by Silsby Media.
The vinyl covers the entire wall and the result looks like the whole ship is about to emerge from the wall and fly into hyperspace. My son had many reactions throughout the build, added Derick.
Shields up! Derick originally painted the exterior a clean grey before adding the distressed touches. Growing on him: Derick claims that Mavrik wasnt initially happy with the distressed paint job, saying it looked like poop.
Hanging out: There is also a TV in the room that the little boy can watch while in the bed. Extra touch: The bed is bolted to a wall with a vinyl mural depicting the Millennium Falcon.
The funniest reaction being when I painted the bed from a clean grey to a weathered finish. He didnt like it all and said it looked like poop. Kids reactions are priceless; however, in the end he loved the finished product.
My wife and I wanted to create an atmosphere that would spark our kids imagination and creativity. In addition, we wanted a design that would maximize his area for activities.
The best reactions are on the internet. The number of people who are my age and older that want the bed in their room is hilarious, but I can relate..
