Hello everyone and welcome on De Papier et de Rêves' channel !
I'm Ursula and i'll be painting with you today some flowers, some watercolor primroses.
I've started with a very quick drawing of the flowers and what i wanted to do
And i've started painting upside down in order to make the background first
And keep the density of color more on the outside of the paper than on the inside
And don't say it usually in my video but i'm using a small object under my paper in order to tilt the paper a little bit
And be able to play with gravity
So i'm painting the background of the primroses with shades of purples
And i vary the colors for a more natural effect
Of course violet isn't natural for foliage or ground but it allows me to have a more abstract and expressive feeling
I'm working more in sensation than exact reality
So i'v used ultramarine blue, magenta and a little bit of moonglow in order to get all these shades of violet
And before my first layer dries totally i add this brushes strokes mimicking foliage in the background
As my paper is still wet the color is diffusing a little bit so it's not totally blurry but it's not sharp either.
And now i let this layer dry completely and turn my paper again in order to start painting under the flowers
And this time as i'm painting primroses' foliage, i'm using a green made of ultramarine blue and quinacridone gold
This mix gives a very off and dull green which will go along well with the violet
As i don't want to much duality between the top and the bottom of my painting because of this contrast of color
I'm putting green in the violet area
And later you'll see that i'll add some violet in the green area in order to balance everything
I want to give to this painting a more abstract feeling than i'm use to
So i try not to define too much the shapes of my flower and to let some space for imagination
In some places i'm blurring the background in the flower
So there aren't drawn precisely
The good thing with this kind of painting is that i'm not forced to use true nature colors
That's why my background is violet. In my reference image all the colors are in very greeny earthy tones and not very interesting...
As you can see here i've modified all those tones to make the colors more interesting
Some tones are not in my reference image but they will transformed the painting in something more interesting
And it's a way to add a little something to my painting : my vision and my sensibility
So now the big step in this painting are done and i'll be adding some details
They will add some depth to the painting and also interest by adding textures
And i'm adding some tones of violet like i said earlier in the green area in order to balance my painting
I've choosed to use a limited palette for the colors
i'm using ultramarine blue, magenta, quinacridone gold and a little bit of moonglow here and there
This choice allows me also to have a certain unity in my painting because the same blue is used in the green and in the violet
so i have a unity of color
In the same idea of this unity of color i try have a similar unity in my brush strokes
So i'm working my brush strokes very light and upwards to be like foliage in one stroke in the violet area
And i'm doing the same brush strokes in the green to balance everything
In fact, i'm creating resonances between the elements so that this elements can "speak" to each other
and to help guide the spectator's view
Painting white flowers with watercolor is a little bit tricky : i have to plan those when i paint the background
There isn't ways to correct that so i have to really think that and plan consequently
But once the shapes are defined, it's very easy to give them some depth and volume with a very light wash
For the supplies i've used only one brush : an Escoda Prado nº16 in an oval pointed shape
It allows me to make big washes quickly as well as tiny details thanks to the very sharp tip
For the colors i've used Ultramarine blue
magenta
Quinacridone gold
and Moonglow
My paper is Canson Heritage cold pressed 300g/m2
I'm adding now the final touches to my painting : some very dark shadows in order to make the flowers pop more
And i'm adding some dark green and some dark violet to keep the balance
I wanted also to balance the warmer side on the left with some bold brush strokes of quinacridone gold in the violet area
they are complementary color so they forme a very good contrast and add some depth and interest to my painting
I've liked very much painting this watercolor and i hope you've liked watching it
i plan to keep painting with that more abstract style
Thanks for watching this video ! Don't hesitate to comment !
See you soon !
