Hi, and welcome to this month's Super News!
Today, we're filming from top of the world...
well, actually, on the rooftop of East Shore Middle School.
This month's installment focuses on how
Milford Public Schools is making this Earth a better place to live.
Specifically, we're going to focus on how we reduce, reuse and recycle.
So, what you see behind me is a solar array.
A solar array allows us to use a natural means of energy
therefore, reducing our need to use electricity.
In Milford Public Schools, it's our plan to have a solar array on the rooftop of
all 14 of our school buildings.
We've already completed six, so eight more to go.
So, how does Milford Public Schools reduce, you might ask?
Well, since 2011, we've had great success.
We have reduced more than 12.6 million kilowatts of electricity usage
and more than 1.07 million CCFs in natural gas.
That's equivalent to like taking 2,000 cars off the streets
and planting 234,000 seedlings
We did it by partnering with Cenergistic, a consulting company
that helped us understand where we were being really wasteful
in the use of energy and power.
So, what did we learn from Cenergistic?
We learned that the small things make a big difference
saving the school district 2.1 million dollars
by simply changing to LED bulbs,
making sure we turn off our lights
at the end of the day
and our computers.
And what's next - we're going to place these stickers
on all of our copiers and printers
to remind people to only print when absolutely necessary
so we can save some more trees.
So, in the area of reuse, we want to give you an example
of how we've woven this into our curriculum
Today, in Ms. Christolini's class, we have a project based learning experience
for students where they are taking
old items, recycled items and creating a new toy.
They've used a process of engaging different stakeholders
to understand what kind of toy they would want to play with
and then use everyday household items to create one.
So, in Milford Public Schools we know we are partners with our community
to make this a better place to live.
That's why we encourage the use of reusable bags,
finding items in our homes that we're no longer using
and moving it forward so others can in our community.
So, in Milford Public Schools, we have a culture of recycling.
Like our residents, we participate in single-stream recycling.
All of our classrooms and offices have blue bins.
We prioritize recycling paper, cans and bottles.
In fact, the money we get from cans and bottles gets recycled into purchasing
materials and supplies for schools.
In addition to that, we also recycle batteries, light bulbs and computers.
Just another way to be Earth-friendly.
For this month's Student Highlight,
let's take a look at Pumpkin Delight's third grade and their Service Learning Project.
