Hello my name is Marcia Greguol. I am professor at the Center
of Physical Education and Sports
of Londrina State University and there
I work in the Sports practice and also
in Physical activity practice for people with
disabilities. I'm here to talk a little bit about
the importance the soccer practice
for handicapped children.
Actually, we've recently achieved
the Paralympic games in Rio de Janeiro,
and had a good disclosure on the media,
and Brazil had excellent results in many sports,
among them, Soccer. And we saw athletes competing with visual disabilities
in soccer 5, of cerebral palsy in soccer 7, and
with real performance that impressed us a lot. In order for this
to be possible and to have this formation
of athletes, it is important that
with ages younger and younger these children these
adolescents can have access
sports practice and sports classes
Unfortunately this is not what happens in practice.
We see that the schools are still scarce of these possibilities of access
to the sports practice, for more that we already have the inclusion
guaranteed by law for 20 years but
in many cases, teachers don't know
very well how to include these
children in sports activities within the school and outside the
school are also still scarce
of programs that accept
the participation of handicapped children.
Independent of the type of
deficiency, there are many
possibilities for the children to
have sports initiation in soccer.
We've also had in the hearing impairment and
the Intellectual Disability area, excellent
results.
Basically what we tend to change
are a few rules regarding the
conventional soccer and especially
the way that we will teach
the skills that are typical of this practice. Only in the case of
Visual deficiency, we have as a
need a specific material, that
is the ball rattle because it allows
the athletes, and children with visual impairment
to locate the ball during the match.
Other than that, it is a pretty smooth practice that
we can start and can bring many benefits for the
children, not only from the motor skills point of view
but also the cognitive point of view. And mostly we see how
important the social point of view is.
I usually say that when a child
without disabilities wants to play soccer on his street,
can easily assemble a group
of friends, put two slippers on each side
to make the goal and with these friends play
soccer the entire afternoon. Now with a child
who's visually impaired or motor deficient,
hearing intellectual deficiency is
much more complex. So if there are
no sports initiation programs
for these children,
in this case specifically in soccer
practice, unfortunately they will not
have access to practice this sport.
So we really need to have the objective to expand
and make the initiation programs more accessible,
because there are many children with disabilities who want to practice.
And it's much simpler in fact than many professionals think
and is financially viable for the public,
and we have many children that
would like to pay for a program and unfortunately can't find one.
So this is my tip, so that we can think of
expanding these programs throughout the
country not only to terms in future athletes competing and winning
medals as they happen in the
Paralympic games
but that we can also have
in the future people with disabilities incorporating the sports practice of their lifestyle. Thanks
