SOLVE THE HOMELESS PROBLEM.
TEO: LETICIA ORDAZ IS LIVE.
LETICIA: LAST NIGHT'S MEETING
WAS CALLED HISTORIC EVEN THOUGH
NO DECISION ON HOW TO HELP THE
HOMELESS WAS REACHED.
MANY IN THE HOMELESS COMMUNITY
SAID THEY WOULD LOVE TO MOVE
INTO ONE OF THESE MICROPADS
.
OVER THE YEARS, THEY HAVE SAID
THEY HAVE MADE MANY RAMOS IS,
AND YET TODAY THEY ARE STILL ON
THE STREETS.
IT WAS A PACKED MEETING WITH
HUNDREDS IN THE AUDIENCE LAST
NIGHT.
DOZENS OF PEOPLE WHO CAME TO
SPEAK.
THE COMMUNITY HEARD SEVERAL
PROPOSALS ON HOW TO GET SOME OF
THE HOMELESS OFF THE STREETS.
IT INCLUDED DIRECTING BOTH CITY
AND COUNTY AGENCIES TO MAKE
CHANGES TO PUBLIC HOUSING PLANS
.
SETTING ASIDE 1600 PUBLIC
HOUSING UNITS FOR THE HOMELESS
AND GIVING THEM FIRST PRIORITY
.
YOU MAY RECALL, A DECADE AGO,
THERE WAS MUCH TALK ABOUT
SETTING UP A DESIGNATED AREA ON
A VACANT LOT WHERE THE HOMELESS
COULD HAVE THEIR OWN TENT CITY
WITH BATHROOMS.
BUT THAT NEVER MATERIALIZED
-- NEVER MATERIALIZED.
THIS TIME AROUND, PEOPLE IN
SACRAMENTO SAY THEY WANT ACTION
NOT WORDS.
THE NEW MAYOR SAYS HE AGREES.
>> THERE NEEDS TO BE ACTION TO
MEET THAT TREMENDOUS CRISIS OUT
THERE.
HOMELESSNESS IS ALL OVER THE
COMMUNITY BOTH INSIDE AND
OUTSIDE THE CITY.
I WANT US TOGETHER TO BEGIN
ACTING AGGRESSIVELY TO GET
HOUSING THAT IS NEEDED.
LETICIA:
ONE STRATEGY ON DISPLAY
THIS WEEK ARE THESE MICRO PADS.
THEY ARE FERTILE -- FULLY
FURNISHED WITH ELECTRICITY.
THE CITY WANTS TO LEASE THEM FOR
ABOUT $1000 A MONTH.
THERE WAS A MEETING LAST NIGHT,
BUT THERE WILL BE ANOTHER
