Some people will tell you that it doesn't matter which goes in the bigger box on a character
sheet: the ability score or the ability modifier.
But I'm here to tell you that it does.
In this video, I'm going to explain why there is only one correct way to fill out
the boxes for ability scores and modifiers on a character sheet.
Hey, Luke Hart here.
Today we have something VERY important to talk about.
And just in case you're new to my channel, I've been a dungeon master since high school,
and I create weekly D&D videos with information and resources to help dungeon masters run
awesome games.
I've been DMing for quite some time, and I've seen lots of crazy things.
However, until a couple years ago, I've never seen a player fill out the ability score
boxes incorrectly.
I mean, I thought this was common sense.
But this guy strolls in to my game on his first session, and can't even fill the boxes
out correctly?
And then, when I confront him about it, he tells me that's just the way he does it.
Really?
At my game.
My game.
That was his first and his last game session with me.
In my opinion, there is no excuse for that sort of behavior.
No excuse whatsoever.
And now, I go onto Reddit, and I find out that LOTS of people are doing it this way.
I swear, sometimes people have no respect.
So, I'm going to show you how to fill out the ability modifiers and ability scores correctly
on your character sheet.
Now let's get something straight, it's DEMEANING to have to explain this, but someone
has to set the world right.
And remember to stay tuned to the end of the video for a special DM bonus tip!
Okay, so here's the big question: do you put the ability score or the ability modifier
in the big box?
Now, I have waded through Reddits posts until my eyes burned, and my clicker finger bled,
Reading all the pros and cons of each approach.
And I'm here to tell you that what you put in the big box is the ability SCORE not the
modifier.
I don't know where the trend started for putting the ability modifier in the big box,
but today it needs to stop.
Like right now.
Okay, I get that in the 5e Starter Set they fill out the pre-gen character sheets that
way with the ability modifier in the big box…
But if everyone at Wizards of the Coast were jumping off bridges, would you jump off a
bridge, too?
Now most people seem to be saying that they put the ability modifier in the big box because
it's easier to read and it's the number they use the most.
But let me make something very clear to you.
Putting the ability score in the big box, is a sacred tradition.
And when you put the ability modifier in the big box, you are desecrating the graves of
the founding fathers of our beloved hobby.
And I find that unacceptable.
So, I admonish you with the authority vested in me, to start taking this a little more
seriously.
The next time you fill out a character sheet, you make darn sure you put the ability scores
in the big boxes.
Furthermore, as proof of your compliance, take a photo of said character sheets and
tweet them to me at luke@thedmlair.
I will be watching.
And if you think it's okay to put the ability modifier in the big box, then I suggest leaving
a comment justifying your reprehensible actions.
Maybe, just maybe, you'll find redemption.
But no guarantees.
And now that you're feeling properly contrite, I'll give you your DM bonus tip.
But first, a shameless plug.
