So, I'm standing at the border between Chile and Argentina
and it is cold as shit. Most people talk about going
to South America during beach season No, no, no, no, no
Coby went during the height of winter.
With that being said, mountains are majestic.
I grew up on the Southside of Chicago, represent it everyday, all day
but umm...
I ain't never really seen no mountains.
So, as I'm standing out there waiting for the 2 hour trip
that is crossing the border between Chile and Argentina
I am staring at these mountains enthralled.
And I'm thinking to myself,
Do I have weed in my bag?
They have had us here for a long time.
No, no, no, no, no, I don't...
I might have weed in my bag.
Luckily, I didn't.
We eventually all get back on the bus and we make our way
to finish the 7 hour journey from Santiago, Chile
to Mendoza, Argentina.
When we get there it is pitch black.
We get out and get into a cab that takes us another 40 minute trek
to Luján de Cuyo.
Now, mountains during the day are majestic.
But mountains at night, in the middle of nowhere
are terrifying.
And as we drive further and further into the darkness
the moonlight decides it's going to hide for the evening
and eventually we pull up at the Lemon Tree Hostel.
We get out and get our bags and the cab immediately darts off.
And I'm thinking not a good first sign.
After taking Instagram pictures of the (actual) sign,
because the (literal) sign was beautiful, we walk into the front door
we see a television showing us a picture of ourselves.
Look around and no one is at the front desk.
There is a buzzard so we beep...
and no one shows up.
We beep again...
no one shows up.
So I go to beep one more time but at that moment
a dog starts barking
and it's a big fucking dog.
(dog barks)
Now at this point,
is when I begin faking it.
I'm trying to pretend for my friend I am not terrified.
And she is trying to pretend for me, being the only one who speaks Spanish,
that she didn't get us into a bullshit situation.
We decide to go out and see if we can get through a side door
but the door is jammed and all we hear is the dog.
(dog barks) It sounds like its getting
closer and closer and closer.
So we go back to the front desk where we see a television
showing us a picture of ourselves.
The dogs stops barking.
So, I go to hit the buzzard thinking someone has
wrangled this beast.
So I hit it once...
no one shows up.
I hit it again... no one shows up.
I go to hit it the third time and that dog returns
(dog barks)
and it sounds like it is
right on us.
At this point, I look at my friend and say,
"Black folks don't do this horror movie shit,
What the fuck is going on?"
She tries to keep me calm. I try to keep her calm.
We go back to the side door and we force ourselves
into the building that is now ominously quiet.
I look to the right and there is a statue
wearing a Jason mask.
Next to it, is a statue wearing a Freddy Krueger mask.
And sitting in this Iron Throne is a statue
wearing the face of the King of the White Walkers.
I'm bout to pee on myself.
I've been doing everything I can.
I've been in South America for almost a week.
I don't speak the language.
I don't know the culture.
I'm already naturally afraid.
I stand out like a sore thumb.
And now I am in the terrifyingly, majestic mountains of
Luján de Cuyo lost and afraid
trying to pretend to keep it together
when we round the corner and life!
It's a 6'4 man with tattoos all over his face.
He says, "Soy Malajunta!"
Soy Coby...
Now at this point, I am deeply afraid.
I'm not trying to judge the individual and his six or seven friends with him.
But I don't speak the language the only thing I know how to say is
"Mi español es muy mal."
But before I know it, we are sitting down
around this fire in the backyard.
The frightening dog is now in front of us,
this sweet and gentle beast.
And Malajunta tells us a story (in Spanish) about being thirteen years old
and not speaking a lick of English
except to say "My English is very bad."
He tells us a story about finding this box of old tapes.
Inside, those cassettes had the music of Wu-Tang Clan,
Tupac, Jay Z, Lil Wayne.
He says at that moment he fell in love.
You see the tattoos he had on his face
were their names and their lyrics.
He said at 13 years old when he found rap music
he found who he was he no longer had to be this imposter.
He knew who Malajunta was.
And me, embraced by his story sitting, covered by these
terrifyingly, beautiful mountains I no longer had to pretend
to feel at home.
Sitting across from Malajunta the biggest Argentinian
rapper in the country I felt right at home.
Thank you all very much!
We are going to have a good night
tonight!
