Hey!
I hope you're well and you had a good week!
Before starting this video,
there are a few things I want to talkt to you about.
First, you noticed that I didn't upload thursday
I apologize, but it was absolutly not possible
for me to film, edit, etc.
I warned you that might happen
but I'm sorry for those who were waiting fervently
their video on thursday evening.
Second, I asked you in my last video
if you would be interested
a kind of Q&A on my channel.
I already received some questions in the comments
so I decided to do a Q&A.
I wanted to do one anyway.
So feel free to send me
on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram
or in the comments
all your question, if we know eachother or not,
personal questions, questions about the channel,
about one particular video, funny questions,
serious questions...
Send it all to me and when I judge that
I have enough questions, I'll make a video.
Without further ado, let's start with today's video.
Today's video, I probably called it
as it's the idea I had
"Diary of a novel"
"Part 1. The genesis"
Why ? I think with everything I said in my videos lately
plus the title which is quite explicit,
you may have understood that
I'm starting to write.
I decided to motivate me
to write a book, a novel to be exact.
I'm so scared and so exited at the same time
because it's something I want to do for a long time
and for some reasons I'm not doing anything.
But in those reasons,
the biggest one is that I don't know where to start
You don't learn at school the steps
to write a book
and I know it helped me to watch YouTube videos
especially Andrea's videos,
hi Andrea!
And Jay's videos as well
because both of them wrote books
and shared their experiences in videos.
So if it helped me, maybe it can help some of you
who want to push themselves to do it
but don't know where to start.
I'm going to share my experience during this process
So there won't be any regularity for this video,
I'll do those when I feel I have enough new
things and something new to say
I'll film videos at this moment
If there is nothing to say,
I won't spend 10 minutes like this
Today, we are going to talk about the genesis of a novel,
so for me, how I had the idea
and how I'm working with it today.
The first thing, as basic as it seems,
is the first idea.
To write something,
unless it's an order, and it's your job,
and you probably don't need to watch this video,
but unless it's an order, if you want to write a book
you have to have the first idea
even if you don't know all of the details yet,
just a draft, or as I call it an idea of an idea
it's something vague but
something that you are intrested in and you want to develop
and build something around it.
I had my first idea
more than a year ago, in march 2017 I guess
I had wrote down a few things
and did nothing about it since
because I just wasn't ready do do something
So I let it mature and grow
until it's ready to hatch and I'm ready to work with it.
This first idea can come from anything and anywhere
It depends on the type of book you want to write:
novel, short stores, fiction, poetry,
biography, autobiography...
There is a million of possibilities
and you can get inspired by averything.
My idea came from
different situations I was living
and experimenting at the time
and that's how it came to me.
I would call the second thing "the trigger"
As I said, I had my idea a year ago
and I never worked on it since
so why I'm starting to work on it today, more than a year after?
You may have noticed it and I talked about it,
but I wanted to start writing again
I started to write poems again, I wanted to write
blog articles...
My creativity and my will to write had a come back
and a few weeks ago, I attended a workshop
organised by an association called "Les Internettes"
a workshop on writing scenarios.
At first, I was going without any project to work on,
without an idea for a script or anything
I just wanted to see how to write fiction
mostly for audio-visual
because it's something I may do on my channel in the future
so I was thinking it might be interesting.
The day was really interesting,
the girls I follow the workshop with were so cool,
a big hello to you if you ever see this video,
and in the four speakers that day,
two of them were working for a publisher
and at some point we had to divide ourselves in small groups
I went instinctively toward them
more than scenarists for television or films.
And in my group, I went back on my old idea
which was in my drafts in my mailbox
I didn't work on it or even just
think about it since I had it
I explained it to Emilie and the girls in my group
and they loved it!
They asked me a lot of questions about it,
"what about your character? And why this?
It could be so good, and maybe you should work on this part..."
They gave me a lot of ideas
and their enthousiasm was communicative
When I left, my brain was on fire with all of those ideas
and all of the motivation they gave me
I wanted just to take my pen and start writing
which would have been a mistake.
So I had the "trigger" at that moment,
I said to myself "I have a good idea
and I think I'm ready to
make all the efforts to at least
work on it. If I don't write it, that's ok,
but at least work on it and se what I can do with it.
So I left more motivated than ever!
I'd call the third step "the start-up".
You can't go straight to the writing.
It's quite impossible
To write a novel, you need characters, adventures,
an environment,
if you write fantasy
you have to creat a whole world around it...
You can't really improvise
or develop a story right away.
You have to take the time to grow it up,
to ask yourself all the questions
to ask yourself all the questions you can
So asking yourself about
your character's past, his future,
what does he want, what is his goal
what's his concious and inconcious goals
(See Emilie, I remember what you said)
who are his friends, what's his biography,
what's gonna happen to him, how
is he gonna reach his goals,
or not reaching them...
I think you have to know
everything about it
even if everything doesn't end in the story,
in the writing,
but I think it's really important to answer for yourself
all the questions and to be clear
about what you want to write.
This question step isn't always easy
because nobody has the answer.
There is no good or bad answer,
you have to invent all of the answers
There is not one way to do it.
For one first idea,
if you ask four writers to write it,
you'll have four differents stories
When I first talk about my idea to my group,
the girls first thought about a thriller
which could be great
but I decided to take an other path.
So there is no good answer,
and it can be a little difficult
when you are a little academic
or just not very confident.
Beside that, I think you have to keep the door open,
every question is good to ask,
all of the hypotheses are worth the try
even if you don't choose them in the end
I'm far today from the idea I first had.
They are related, of course,
but it's not that simple and I'm still today
in that question step
and it's really cool, because at the same time
I'm creating, and I'm working on my principal character
so at the same time I'm creating him
but I feel like I'm meeting him
so it's a little weird.
I think somehow he always have been inside of me
because I'm creating him from
some things I experienced
and internalized at some levels.
So it's very interesting, this feeling of knowing him
and descovering him completely
So this is where I am now,
I'm still working on my questions.
I'm lucky to have Emilie,
I can send emails to her
she is guiding me, asking me other questions
If I hade one advice for you, it would be to have
someone, even if he/she's not working in publishing,
but at least interested in literature,
I think it's important because
if this person likes reading, she can ask you questions
that she asks herself when she reads
So I think it's important to have someone who is into reading,
someone kind
not someone who is gonna tell you what to do
but who's gonna try to help you open you mind
and encourage you, it's very important.
I'm lucky that Emilie offerd me
to follow me in this adventure
But you can ask your mum, a friend, a teacher,
anyone, I think it's very important
to suround yourself with someone
you can talk to,
and find some echo to your questions
like a miror effect or something.
So I'm really excited to start the writing part
but I'm not there yet
and I know you can't skip the steps.
Few times back, skiping steps
made me start things and give up right away
because I had a lot of idea, and just wrote down
three things about my story and characters
and start writing
so I wrote an intro, it's probably nice to read
but how to develop a story through that
I think it's impossible.
If some of you succed that way, please tell me how!
So, I'm done with this video,
I hope you enjoyed it and found it interesting,
I think those videos will help me to keep track of my journey
and I hope it can help some of you to
start a project you like, even if it's not writing
I hope it can help you, interest you, motivate you
Also, don't be shy and ask me your questions for the Q&A,
regarding this video, other videos, all subjects on earth!
Feel free to ask for the Q&A.
Until then, I send you a lot of hugs,
I wish you a very good week and I'll see you thursday !
Bye !
