Waching daily Dec 29 2017

the north of italy

baión valley 9 October 1963

some workers of the national agency of

Italy's electric power were

having lunch at the top of the dam

vall ont

that day as always they were

contemplating the hillsides and enjoying

of the fantastic natural spectacle

when pieces of the mountain stump

they detached towards the reservoir

Music

twelve o'clock in the evening the neighbors

they also realized the

landslide gervasi to mazuco

11 years old lived in case a village

just in front of the monte toc tanteran

people saw the cracks of the top mountain and

I saw that the adults were armed but

my in to be who I also

Don't worry, he'll be better soon.

a week before, my mother had

told that he had dreamed that

drowned in the coconut water

6 kilometers from the dam

I found the power plant

sortzen e whose four huge turbines

they worked with water from the

Reservoir Luigi Ribis was the deputy director

from the central and had been

recording the daily shift of the

slope of the mountain

the movements of that day had been

so big that he thought it was about

an error put the tie to receive the

data of the slope sliding

this as they surprised and I asked that

confirms it without tail from the room

control you could see rock blocks

and earth falling into the water

indeed in fact the graph

it showed that he was about to

occur a landslide

in anticipation of the avalanche on the

lake, the operators of the company had

reduced the water level so that

waves produced by detachment

were contained by the wall of

Reservoir three o'clock in the afternoon

On the slopes of Mt.

representatives of the power station

they insisted to the farmers that they

take your mountain animals

the local priest don carlo honor and ni

he perceived the anxiety of the villagers

Music

if approved, we knew something but not

they were more than just more dry rumors

we also did not know if the mountain toc

it would come down

how much e was set on the earth could

fall and if the prose would break

Music

in the afternoon the herb mother is already

he went to move the cows of the

Family?"

I wanted to go to the monte toc with my mother

you do always went with her she was not

wrong and I took the beings with obama but

He told me it was better that I stay in

home with grandma and that I would go back to

next morning five o'clock on the

Afternoon.

in longarón and a small town to two

kilometers from the base of the dam another

schoolgirl Michelle Coletti was having dinner

with his family the home anne had a

different environment for a

season you heard rumors weird he knew

show micaela's father worked in

the dam and her mother was alarmed by

what I told him that he had heard my

mother say that it was better to send

away to children

I was very surprised and thought what we have

done so that mom wants to get rid of

us and now I in my father

he answered that yes you had to die

because if one day the prey was better

die all together

mom olga sends

six o'clock in the afternoon until six o'clock

in the afternoon they told us that he was

about to occur the shift and that

raise the key personnel of the central

Electric was invited to join the

engineers on top of the dam to

supervise the detachment but luigi

I had work that ended equality and

sadiel I wanted to go but I told my

partner that had to finish a

thing so I stayed a little longer and

He's gone

Music

nine o'clock at night and from his

privileged position on top of the

tallest dam in europe

the companions of luigi waited

witness the creation of a work as

the one of a tsunami of 20 meters high

when the landslide in

come to the water

in the valley below the rumors about

the dam had been forgotten when the

night the Hungarian bars were not even

full of football fans watching

the match of the European Cup between the

Real Madrid and the Glasgow Rangers more

10 and 39 minutes of the night in case

on top of the herbs dam was already

almost asleep

MUSIC

his house was influenced by noise

frightening the noise did not sound like

came from the other side of the mountain it

I heard inside or not thing was a noise

huge

my grandmother said it was the end of the world

in the church of the town don carlo heard

the same overwhelming noise

Music

federer said a lighting was on

that illuminated the whole area of toc

Then I saw a black thing, not a shadow

a tall shadow that rose

were the two columns of water came to

the top of the bell tower and they started

raining water and rocks on case in which of

knees screaming shit

having that his house could stay

destroyed the brother of herbs already

he tried to save his family

he grabbed me by the shoulders and threw me

up the stairs he took me to the

back door and pushed me out

perhaps it was more than 250 meters away

on top of the dam but it was

bogged down

I ran like crazy because I was very

scared

my instinct told me that I had to

run up

I thought I was going to die

"I will die."

under the Hungarian dam nor the lights

of the streets were turned off micaela

coletti was in bed

the jee to be asleep while waiting

a kiss from my mother and my mom and my

grandma came into the room and said

that was going to close the shutters

because a storm was approaching for

I felt everything more money

then I noticed that my bed was doubled

in the middle one and I stayed inside

I noticed that it was moving at a great speed

edifying

a wall of water 70 meters high and

longarón world and swept the entire valley

razing buildings and killing hundreds

of people

twenty minutes later the waters

they removed and left a landscape planted

of death in longarón told me that

sees totally buried among debris

ovules and I knew I had to make a

effort and I raised my arms to

touch my face

MUSIC

I do not remember much more after that

longarón and had been devastated

they started the rescue work but

few survivors were found

houses the roads and the line

railway had been dragged or

they had been buried under the

debris

Music

they found me after two and

morning average

I was found

completely buried only

one hand and one foot protruded

micaela was one of the 30 children who

rescued and the only one of his family that

he survived

Music

that night they lost their lives more than

2,000 people including 60 employees of

the power station are of a michi

own melted there to see how

it happened but they were not kamikazes

they went up and they never came back they died in

baion

in the light of dawn the rescue teams

they were stunned when they saw that

the rocks and mud had filled the

huge reservoir and a spooky

M-shaped scar of limestone

newly exposed identified the place

where hours before there were lands

agricultural

fifty years later the scar of

landslide is still

visible and continues to be a magnet for

the geologists who struggle to reveal

the mechanisms that produced similar

destruction on such a huge scale

we are almost 1 high of the shift of

land

this is the surface that sank the

caam

the lateral limit is also observed

of the detachment that is that great

fallas andes and from here to there there

Kilometers

The Monica Girotti teacher directs the

latest research team

the objective of my research get

a three-dimensional model of

detachment to better understand what

what happened in 1963

I am still amazed

the geology will shed light on the

release mechanism but one

thing is already clear the root of

disaster was the recent intervention

of man in the valley

Professor Davie Peli heads a

international initiative to investigate

predict and prevent shifts of

earth catastrophic understanding

of the bayon disaster has been one of

the most important challenges of his career

of the year in terms of victims is the

greater landslide

catastrophic of the last

century and surely it has been the

most important landslide

of all times because it served to

raise awareness of a whole series of

problems

Pep's findings are unmistakable

bathroom was a total disaster

caused by man

There is no doubt that the May disaster

it would not have occurred if the human being

I would not have intervened now

deepen the investigation we can

reveal because 270 million meters

cubic of the mountainside is

precipitated on the ballon reservoir

and how they managed to kill more than 2,000

people

Music

ed reads rebuild the steps of the

original engineers when they tried

understand the geology of the valley and

identify the critical errors that

they led to disaster

in 1956 began the excavations of

the foundations of the vayant dam what

that would make a steep throat for

create one of the most artificial lakes

deep in the world and generate energy

hydroelectric plant to boost

economic expansion of italy in the

postwar period

the chief engineer was Carlos Homens to a

renowned business designer

International Analyst

It was his last project before

retire and I knew that the spectacular

Italian dolomite mountain range

offered a unique opportunity

dolomites are part of the Alps and

they are basically formed by large

limestone blocks that are pushed

up to create high peaks

the steep slopes of the valley of

baión seemed to turn it into the place

ideal to build a dam the dam

it could be relatively narrow and by

so relatively small in

width terms

obviously it had to be very high and

could contain huge amounts of

water in the valley that occupy that message

and his team of geologists inspected

with great care the area where

they would build the foundations of the dam

but they paid little attention to the valley

upstream that would end up flooding

in the fifties the emphasis was

they put correctly calculate the

design of the ra dam

they multiplied a lot of effort

understand the geology of the river valley

above it was considered that it was not

relevant neither for the company and for the

reservoir

there he discovered that his attitude

carefree was even more

alarming

given the famous geological instability

of the region between the mountains and

valleys and much more fragile rocks of

sandstone clay and slate and the

whole system is on feet and

failures so it's very unstable is

the physical environment for the creation of

landslides

nothing of it was a novelty for the

local population watched

constantly any sign of

rock fractures and landslides

land

even the mountain stump adjacent to the

Dam had earned the nickname Monte

Andante

the works lasted two years and the dam

of 261 meters was almost finished when

On March 22, 1959, a new reservoir

on the nearby bridge 6 suffered a huge

landslide that generated a

wave of 20 meters high similar to that of

a tsunami that drowned a worker and

overflowed the dam

that was the first time that

he understood the effect potentially

harmful to the great landslides of

lands and triggered a seismic wave in

the northern hydroelectric industry

of Italy was not the same mechanism that

sowed death and destruction in

bayonne the mountainside is

precipitated over the lake generating a

immense tsunami

the dam remained intact but it

overflowed and flooded the valley below the

hydroelectric industry had

underestimated the consequences

potentials of a flood

valley when a reservoir is filled

hillsides that have drained in a deep

valley for thousands of years are drenched

for the first time with results

amazing

the rock that looks solid often

It is made of separate blocks that are

kept in place by the severity and

the friction

you have to imagine that the blocks of

rock that is inside the mountains are

a bit like banks when the level goes up

course.

the block starts to emerge good in

reality does not float at all but

increases your mobility and when

increase your mobility

the friction force the resistance the

movement decreases with which they are much

most likely the slides of

land

fearing that the shift would be repeated

of land and the fatal tsunami of ponte

6

the electric company commissioned a

study of the banks of the reservoir

proposed for the vayant valley the

chief geologist of the project was the

professor leopoldo miller who commissioned

eduardo c mensah son of the chief engineer

and recently graduated in geology

to direct the study

Eduardo traveled every inch of

valley watching the rock formations

when he found evidence of an ancient

large-scale movement in the bilge

the slopes near the dam seemed

that the worst fears of the company are

they had confirmed but something is wrong

he was convinced that there was a great

old landslide located

on the south shore of the reservoir a

old landslide have already been

moved by which it is likely that the

rocks at the base of that shift are

much more fragile wicca

the fat man feared that the flood of

valley could reactivate the old

shift that in turn could

unleash a catastrophic tsunami

repeating the deadly disaster of ponte 6

on a much larger scale

the mass of the landslide that

identified was 100 meters from the

own dam and eduardo was right

the whole project would have to be scrapped

for the father of Eduardo Carlos

the news was devastating and started a

more detailed investigation

if indeed it was the

location of a gigantic

old landslide had

that there is evidence in the strata of

underground rock

the engineers drilled three holes

on the slope of the mountain in the area

of danger identified by Eduardo and the

team of geologists looked for signs of

Previous movements like rocks

fractured or layers of unstable limestone

despite drilling up to 170 meters of

depth did not find evidence of

previous landslide

the head of the carlos de mensah project

it took a relief

your main geological advisor the

Professor Miller was sure that the

hillsides were formed by blocks of

solid and immovable limestone

the designers of the company arrived

to the conclusion that although there was

the potential of small shifts

of land on the banks of the reservoir

there was a real danger of large

landslides in February 1960 a

once discarded the threat of a

destructive landslide sense

gave the green light to the next phase of

project before delivering the dam to the

electric company had to confirm

its structural integrity filling the

butt reservoir

in October the reservoir had 170 meters

of depth

91 meters below the maximum and the

dam was holding up perfectly

but then there was a setback

farmers discovered a huge crack

in the form of ly just above the reservoir

Music

the guide that had been about

1,700 meters of it

today it widened about three centimeters

daily

we had to be a surprise

horrible for the team

Music

November 5th, 2015

the fears of the electric company

they saw confirmed days later when

a mountain fragment the size of

six football fields rushed

over the ballon reservoir and produced

a wave of two meters high luckily

nobody was injured but the rest of the

colossal landslide continues

in motion and its registration caused a

new sense of urgency in the

electric company thanks to the analysis

prior of eduardo of the strata of

rock they believed that the unstable terrain

The remaining area extended to 250 meters

depth inside the hillside and

occupied a total volume equivalent to

90 urban blocks with skyscrapers

flats

Chief Engineer Carlos M Nhtsa

I needed to go to sea before the mountain

that unstable mass and roll over

the lake and bury the valley

Music

the defense team of engineers is not

there was no way to stop the

sliding its immense size towards

impracticable nailing it to the slope of the

mountain with concrete capillaries

but professor miller had the

feeling that he could control

the speed at which the earth

precipitated on the lake and prevent a

devastating tsunami

he believed that if raise the water level

activated the landslides to

reducing the level should slow them down

Carlos immense immediately approved the

idea of miller and opened the floodgates

of the dam to reduce the depth

course.

miller's theory was simply that

reducing the level of the reservoir would allow

that the water drains head the hillsides

Increasing friction and anchoring

again the floating blocks of stone

limestone on the mountain

Music

over the next two months

the pace of the glide grew from

3 centimeters a day just one

millimeter a day and the great mass of

landslide slowed down

and at the end he stopped

the consequence was that it tells me spot

they were convinced that by increasing the

level of the lake could cause

vomiting and again reducing or of

have that movement although they could not

permanently stop the shift

of lands

the two men were convinced of

that they could control the speed at

that slid over the valley semen

shay miller proposed to pour the

gigantic rock mass in the lake

using the water depth of the

reservoir like the accelerator and the brake

a car so the dam was free

to be able to start producing energy

it was a simple plan but apple and you

it amazes their understanding of geology

and the mechanisms of the movement of

that great mass was very limited and without

However, despite its lack of

knowledge are part of the plan

extraordinarily daring to try

control the movement of the shift

of earth by lifting or

water level reduction

Miller's team of geologists was

sure I could break all the

mass gradually without causing a

dangerous tsunami but Carlos NSA

he showed more caution insisted on

expand the plan to face the

worst possible situation in which the

landslide rush

over the abrupt lake and

catastrophically causing a tsunami

a study was commissioned to find out the

maximum safe depth of the reservoir

a level of water that left the

discovered enough prey wall

to contain the largest possible tsunami

semenya tried to make sure that the

tsunami would not wake the prey but in

1961 there were no computers for

play a tsunami simulation

carlo's team built a

scale model of the dam and led to

out a series of physical simulations

the goal was to see how big

it could be the work

the initial experiments suggested

that the worst possible wave could measure 20

meters high

then sense calculated the depth

maximum of the dam and left the dam with

25 meters of concrete wall at

discovered to protect the valley from

Down!

he thought that he finally had his back

carlos de mensah covers still

he had to fine tune his calculations

but before he could do it he died

suddenly of a hemorrhage

brain without the leadership of his

visionary chief engineer of the works

the company suffered a crisis

energy formed a new team to

carry out the plan and save the

legacy project porsche mensah

Music

Do not! Do not!

September 26, 1963 in both

years since the

completion of the tunnel

bypass

the water level rose and fell

systematically to control the

landslide on the valley

flooded and until then the plan had

operated

two weeks before the disaster the

landslide had advanced a

total of 3 meters

the operators of the company were already

convinced that they had capacity

to control and landslides

the reservoir was at its level of

highest water to date at 245

meters on the base of the dam was

ten meters above the level of

maximum security set by semenza

There is no doubt that they were trying to reach a

point where they could pour the

landslide on the lake

they were raising the level of the lake to

highest limit they believed that

could their high-risk strategy

seemed to be taking effect

the shift was picking up speed

the floodgates were opened to reduce

water to a safe level before

final detachment

the operators of the company expected

how they had previously checked that

reducing the water level would slow down

the bleed

but that time it was different h actually

the shift continued to accelerate

just what they did not expect and they stayed

very confused with what happens is

that if a detachment occurred

from the flank of the mountain then its

simulations guaranteed that the tsunami

resulting would overflow the walls of the

dam for two tense weeks the

workers reduced the water level what

more than they could without adding pressures

to the slopes but the landslide of

Earth continued to accelerate

October 9, 1963 the slope of the

Mountain was already advancing 30 centimeters

newspapers but the dam was already 25

meters of concrete wall to

discovered the workers of the company

they breathed a sigh of relief because the couple already

it was high enough to contain

any wave like the level of the lake already

it was below the maximum size

of the tsunami that they had calculated

they considered that the situation was

completely safe so sure that the

managers of the electric company

were invited to witness the

creation of the tsunami and was not alerted

no danger to the local population

but instead of the 20-meter tsunami

provided

the wave rose to 200 meters above

from the walls of the dam a figure

amazing ten times higher than

Expected

now our researchers will reveal

because the plan to control the

ground shift by adjusting the level

of the reservoir was a mistake of judgment so

Garrafal does it from the beginning of the

earth shift movement its

model of the way he behaved

his research was wrong

geological failed to identify that

inside the limestone there were fine

clay farms and those layers of

soft clay produced a zone of

weakness

the team of geologists drilled holes

in order to look for evidence of a

fragile sliding surface

but it did not go deep enough to

find the clay look for a layer of

clay that was 250 meters from

depth and he only had one

centimeter thick

but that one-centimeter layer of

thickness was enough to determine if the

landslide could move or

not the extraordinary properties of

that layer of clay ended up causing

that one side learned about the mountain

Shatter is suddenly at a speed

Incredible...

the study of monte coach of mónica

girotti has revealed the deposits of

clay that the miller team does not

found that this is clay over

the one that slipped the shift of

land of 1963 made of shell is a

continuous layer when he pulled out he came

down the mass moved but the

beautiful research you focus on

another characteristic of that thin layer of

clay this clay is a material

waterproof that does not allow the

water houses

that hydrophobic layer points a mechanism

completely new for the

slip that miller never had in

account for rainwater from the top of the

monte toc could drain to the rock

under the clay and get trapped

the increase in pressure that

pushed to the clay from below could

destabilize the surface of

slip but it would take a

huge volume of water trapped for

move the mass of the landslide

the girotti team has gathered evidence

crucial that rainwater from

the entire upper section of the mountain toc

It was collected on the limestone island

under the landslide when

there was heavy rain

a huge amount of water was left

trapped under the clay

how I did not have where to go the pressure

under the clay it shot up and the

landslide suffered a

additional shake

girotti is clear that the attempt to

control the landslide

modifying the swamp level

lacked a key element

it was not a good plan because miller did not

took into account the existence of clay

inside the hillside and could only

control lake levels but not

the rainfall is a

useless project if the original equipment

of geologists would have known that there was

berlin clay believes that history

I had followed a different course

then it was already known that the clay was

a bi material if they had known that

there were layers of clay is almost certain

that they would have abandoned the project in

at that moment.

when pep and returned to the file

discovered how close Miller was

find the clay layer in 1961

miller installed four valves

water pressure called piezometers

to monitor the water level in the

rock

I wanted to make sure that the hillside of

limestone rock behaved in the way that

I foresaw his theory

three of the devices confirmed the

thousands expectations that the level of

Rock water depended on the level of

reservoir but hidden among the data of the

fourth piezometers edlin controls

devastating test of a layer of

clay

the water level of that hole is not

corresponded to the water level of the

lake the piezometers registered a

high water level

regardless of the water level that

had in the swamp was probably

an indication that the layers of

clay were docking water to great

pressure under the mass of the shift of

earth but miller assumed that the fourth

piezometers was defective and your data

they were wrong as behavior

of the fourth hole did not fit with the

preconceptions about the way in which

operated the landslide

I ignore it for apple and the seed of

disaster was seeded with that failure

systematic when it comes to understanding the

monte toc proves that if the model with

the one that works is does not explain some of

the behaviors that you observe is that

the model is wrong is not the bleed

of earth who is doing something wrong

and fail to develop the

model means allowing protections

landslides like that

Velilla understands why the

landslide but there is a

final mystery that surrounds the disaster

of vayant because it was the tsunami a lot

greater than anyone expected

the petit teacher focuses attention on

the simulation experiments of

siemens tsunamis to the model that

had designed I foresaw that the

tsunami would be relatively small of

20 meters or less but the real

landslide caused a wave

of displacement that surpassed in more

of 200 meters the height of the dam the

meticulous scale model should

have given them an indication

precise the size of the tsunami linked to

a critical factor for the outcome of the

model completely depended on the

speed at which the

landslide

the experiments checked the effect

of landslides to

different speeds

from the slowest movement to the most

fast they expected to advance

the displacement

the team of engineers calculation

approximately that the speed more

rapid what could be produced

landslide was a minute that

in turn corresponded to four seconds

in the simulation but when davey peli

examined the data from the night of

disaster discovered that the collapse

whole only lasted 45 seconds

although it was only 15 seconds less than

your estimate that error of 25 by

perc

enough to completely alter the

result of the simulation the model

that they had actually built was

very sensitive very good but when

we design digital models often

we use the phrase junk that goes in the trash

who knows and unfortunately in this case

how it had been assumed that the

landslide moving slowly

introduced erroneous data in the

model and consequently they got

deceptive results or when

they put the results into practice

wrong of the simulation

the consequences were very real

the incredible speed of

final slip has puzzled to

the scientists for almost five

decades of acceleration was very

drastic as a car's

formula 1 ko

in a few seconds

the landslide went from

move a few centimeters per hour

at a speed of 110 kilometers

hour does not think it has already resolved the

mystery of the amazing final speed

and once again the answer is in the

clay and its extraordinary

behavior when compressed to great

Depth

you have to imagine that there were 200 meters

of solid limestone on top of a

Clay layer asked for proof that

when it is buried under millions of

tons of rock the clay that is

normally soft hardens night is

a brittle material

it's hard and effort for millennia the

deep clay had not been

disturbed

but to fill the reservoir for the first time

huge pressures were created on that

thin layer of that allowed the

clay begin to form and at

do what

came up what we call a micro

scream diets tiny fractures that

open on the rock

the amazing behavior of those

micro cracks is the key to the

final acceleration of the shift of

land

as the landslide

advance the small cracks that fiennes

they spread out of the USA

they created big cracks and the audience

other cracks form a single

surface throughout the clay

once the micro cracks are

spread across the surface of

displacement in the form of m

the total collapse was inevitable

eyewitnesses stated that the

final subsidence only lasted 45

seconds but beverly's analysis

shows that this final phase

irreversible had started a lot

before the 45-second disaster it was not

more than the part that we contemplate but

the final acceleration of the shift

of earth did not occur in 45 seconds

happened over 160 days 10 of

August 1963 60 days before the

final sinking

the water was at its highest level

to date only 25 meters away

below the height of the dam wall

until then the ups and downs

from the lake level they had been

causing the spread of micro

cracks but by then the cracks

they had already penetrated so much into the clay

that there was a chain reaction and

the cracks continued to spread

alone the micro cracks happened to

control the movement of the shift

of land at that time the operators

I had no control over the

Earth shift behavior

although they believed that if one by one

the few sections of clay that

they were without adding they went

cracking faster and faster and

the landslide accelerated

it was a classic domino effect was

inevitable that happened

after 50 years of uncertainty and

we can reveal how the construction of

the highest dam in europe caused a

tsunami that devastated an entire community

October 9, 1963 four hours and

thirty minutes for disaster

the workers of the dam had

been preparing for a gigantic

final landslide and there had been

reduced the water level to leave 25

meters of concrete wall exposed to

two minutes for the disaster believing

that the 20-meter tsunami I expected

the company would be contained by the wall

of the dam the local population was not

alerted to the imminent collapse of

landslide

the employees of the energy company

they watched the show from a

privileged enclave on top of the

Dam a minute for disaster though

the operators of the dam ignore it

advances tens of meters under the

surface of the mountain there was a

immense layer of brittle clay that

I had been cracking for two months

uncontrollably then only remained

a small section 'fractured cinema

45 seconds for the disaster

the last section of clay is

cracked and a landslide

of the size of 90 urban blocks it

precipitated on the reservoir accelerated so

fast as a formula one car and

its impact created a tsunami of more than

meters height.

30 million tons of water fell

from a height of 261 meters

producing a hole of 40 meters

deep in the valley floor

the narrowness of the same valley accelerated the

water column 70 meters high that

it flowed through the valley at about 140

two minutes

Music

I looked down from the helicopter and saw the

where the wave had come from

in several the madness of being was demonstrated

Yogaşala | nişantaşı'nda, cadde'de, etiler'de yoga stüdyosu - Duration: 2:01.

YogaŞala means "House of Yoga".

YogaŞala was established as the first yoga center of Turkey in Nişantaşı, İstanbul in 2001.

Now it operates at three yoga centers in Istanbul, and one in Ankara

as the biggest yoga school in Turkey.

We want everyone to do yoga,

and let yoga be a part of people's lives,

so, we have different yoga styles in our school.

Our aim is not only to give lessons for one hour and a half or one hour,

but it is to make yoga part of life.

We invite instructors from all over the world,

whom we believe that can share their inspirations and experiences with us.

Chuck Miller, Manju Jois, Richard Freeman, Cyndi Lee, Sarah Powers

are some of the important names which we have invited to Turkey.

So that pose is really tough and i think it is especially tough for men...

But there is still a resistance, up and down... It's like the rubber band idea.

Two things in opposite directions create extension.

We both have short term memberships and memberships which last up to one year…

that have unlimited attendance.
