This is a Project by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona,
in collaboration with Loro Parque Fundación.
What we do, basically, is collect data of different kinds: I am registering
the behaviour of orcas on their free time, but also
other information related to the relationship between trainers and orcas and
how they perceive they have been throughout the day.
We also analyze clinical data, and what is new is an analysis of hormones in dregs.
What we do is analyze metabolites on cortisol, which is a hormone related
to drain activity and the physiological stress response of the animal.
Therefore, what we want is gathering together all these different pieces of information
to try and identify, develop and validate these potential
indicators of wellbeing on orcas. This can then be a tool for institutions
such as Loro Parque, but also others.
And, quite probably, some of these indicators could then be used to evaluate
the wellbeing of orcas in nature as well.
