Waching daily Nov 1 2017

Something terrible happened in these dollhouses.

Maybe a suicide.

A murder.

A stabbing with an adorable knife.

These dollhouses are part of Frances Glessner Lee's Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death,

which she made in the 1940s and early 50s.

They're in the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum

for a reason.

They're incredibly detailed —

these cans are all labeled.

Accurately.

And these dollhouses are used by law enforcement

to train and to develop analytical capabilities.

But these artful dioramas actually contain two mysteries:

What happened in these houses?

And why did Frances Glessner Lee spend her time, and part of her fortune, making them

perfect?

This is "three-room dwelling," and it's a dollhouse murder showstopper.

There are 19 of these dioramas and each one comes with a backstory, drawn from composite

real crimes.

In this one, Robert, Kate, and baby Linda Mae Judson had a nice porch where the milkman

stopped by.

They were living the American dream until the murders happened.

"As you start to sort of investigate the evidence...

the first time I approached this case, I looked at it for a couple of hours, I took tons of

pictures home and I analyzed them for hours, trying to figure this out, because it doesn't

seem like things add up.

There's a bloodstain that's in the baby's room but it's just a blood pool, and there

doesn't seem like there's any kind of trail from it, it's just sitting there.

We don't know what had happened there.

There's bloody footprints that are leading into the bedroom, the husband is lying on

the ground on some of the bed coverings, we have no idea how he died, he's covered in

blood all over his pajamas, so it's very hard to tell."

Three-room Dwelling's morbid details come from the same mind that crafted incredibly

delicate ones.

"There's this little eggbeater down under the cubbard here that I like to point out,

and this was apparently originally a solid gold charm from a charm bracelet.

The Nutshells themselves are lit as the rooms would be, the flashlight helps you find the

evidence.

There's quite a lot of evidence in these pieces that you would probably never discover

without it, so it's a fun thing to have in the exhibition, but it's also a real

training tool for really systematically looking through these pieces."

And you notice the fabric on a chair, the blocks scattered on the porch, and the blood

spattered on the baby's wall.

Because law enforcement still use these to train, it's tempting to play CSI with these

murders.

But notice that Atkinson only broke down the nutshells, she didn't didn't give away any

solutions.

That's partly because the solutions are still kept secret for those in training.

But mostly, it's because the mystery serves a purpose.

"The point of the nutshells is not to solve them.

The point is to collect detail."

Erin Bush saw the nutshells in their home before the Renwick gallery — the Maryland

Medical Examiner's office, where they're used for training investigators.

"The goal of the nutshells is to train your eye to see small, minute, seemingly insignificant

details that stand out.

So the kitchen: It's Spring, 1944 — Robin Barnes is a

housewife.

Fred Barnes, her husband finds her.

And the story is, he's out of the house to run an errand.

He comes home, he looks through the kitchen window and he sees her laying on the kitchen

floor.

He can't open the door, the door is locked from the inside, the window is locked from

the inside.

So he calls the police, the police break the door down.

So this is what we know when we arrive.

She was clearly in the middle of something.

She's clearly preparing a meal.

There's a pie in the stove, there are potatoes in the sink.

You don't commit suicide if you're in the middle of dinner.

And I think, if you look very closely at the stove, and if you can recognize a 1940s stove,

you will see that all the gas jets are on.

There are a lot of weapons in the room.

There's a rolling pin, there's an iron, there is a knife, on the chair.

It's very possible someone hit her over the head.

If you look very closely at the door, it's stuffed with newspaper.

So now we're back to suicide.

The point, of course, was to recognize these details and to teach investigators how to

recognize these details.

It was a very different way to investigate crime than they were used to."

Frances Glessner Lee was an heir to International Harvester, a company that produced farm equipment

and other machinery.

Her family made a fortune, a part of which she eventually used to fund miniature crime

scenes.

She endowed Harvard's Department of Legal Medicine, the first of its kind, and became

an honorary police captain.

Her artistic obsession helped detectives become more attentive to crime scenes, relying on

evidence instead of hunches.

"For me, as a historian, when I look at them, I don't think who did it, I think

my God why is she inventing this scene the way she's inventing it, you know, what's

in her head, and to me that's fascinating."

Lee's nutshells are as complex as the scenes they depict.

They overflow detail: the magazines crumpled on the floor; the apples that will never be

eaten; the body that will never move but is so vividly rendered that you can imagine it

once did.

"On the one hand, she was the young Frances Glessner who was this philanthropic lady who

was brought up in a fine household, and the other half of her personality was

Captain Lee, and those two things did come together sometimes."

Lee wrote a 1952 article in the Journal of Law and Criminology.

"Some years ago, the writer was greatly surprised to learn that nowhere in America

was Legal Medicine, as thus described, being taught.

The writer has for many years worked sporadically at miniatures, hence these presented themselves

as the solution."

Frances Glessner Lee died in 1962 of natural causes.

"It must be understood, these models are not 'whodunits' - they cannot be solved

merely by looking at them.

They are intended to be an exercise in observing, interpreting, evaluating and reporting-- there

is no 'solution' to be determined."

This toy's only approved for ages...dead and older.

News Wrap: Kenyan police battle protesters over election upheaval - Duration: 5:53.

JUDY WOODRUFF: In the day's other news: New violence erupted across Kenya over the repeat

presidential election.

And officials postponed attempts to finish the voting tomorrow.

Police battled protesters in several cities today, and, in some places, rival political

gangs also fought.

The death toll rose to six.

Opponents of President Uhuru Kenyatta say the election is rigged, and they have refused

to take part.

The crisis over secession in Spain's Catalonia region came to a head today in its capital,

Barcelona.

The regional parliament declared independence, and the national government then declared

direct rule over the region.

Jonathan Rugman of Independent Television News reports from Barcelona.

JONATHAN RUGMAN: This morning, a crowd of several thousand gathered outside the Catalonian

parliament, pressurizing M.P.s inside to vote for the independence they have been dreaming

of and following their every move.

Adding to that pressure, dozens of rebel mayors from across the region bring their staffs

of office, but all too aware they could lose that authority when direct rule is imposed.

WOMAN: If we have to disobey, we will do it.

JONATHAN RUGMAN: You could be arrested, couldn't you, sent to jail?

WOMAN: Yes, everybody can be arrested.

They can't arrest our hearts.

JONATHAN RUGMAN: In the chamber, opposition M.P.s tried to keep talking, but it didn't

work.

Three parties walked out, shouting, "Long live Catalonia" and "Long live Spain."

The vote was 70 in favor of independence and just 10 against with two abstentions.

Amid all the back-slapping here in the Catalonian parliament, the applause, the sense of history

in the making.

What these M.P.s have effectively done is take this region over a political precipice

into the unknown.

But look at these Catalonian mayors waving their ceremonial staffs with delight and shouting

for a freedom which Spain's leaders and Spain's constitution had refused to bestow.

As the news broke outside, a crowd of many thousands joined in the celebrations.

If there still is a majority in favor of Spanish rule, it had stayed away.

And it didn't take long for the Senate in Madrid to vote for direct rule and for the

Spanish prime minister to move towards imposing it.

MARIANO RAJOY, Spanish Prime Minister (through translator): The aim is to insist on taking

back legality, and therefore I want to tell Spaniards and all Catalans to be calm, that

things will be fine and will be measured, as they have been up until now.

JONATHAN RUGMAN: And these scenes of jubilation may not last for long.

Several European governments have refused to recognize the independence voted for today.

While the regional government here could be sacked, the talk is of peaceful resistance

to Madrid.

But nobody knows how long that peace will last.

JUDY WOODRUFF: That report from Jonathan Rugman of Independent Television News.

The State Department today banned doing business with more than three dozen Russian groups.

They are linked to Russia's defense and intelligence agencies.

The sanctions list was about a month overdue.

It is required by a new law aimed at Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The United Nations sounded new warnings today about Rohingya Muslims who have fled Buddhist

Myanmar.

More than 600,000 have crossed to Bangladesh since August to escape assaults by Myanmar's

military.

Today, the U.N.'s Human Rights Organization said refugees tell of a -- quote -- "methodical

pattern of gross human rights violations," including killings, torture and rape.

LOUISE AUBIN, United Nations Commission on Human Rights: Many children are very traumatized.

Women and older persons have been brutalized.

And it is very important that we give them a sense of security, giving them a moment,

a chance to make their lives more normal, and this is what you're offering in this country.

JUDY WOODRUFF: The death toll among the Rohingya is unknown, but the U.N. officials warned

that it may be high.

Back in this country, the Trump administration says that it played no role in a $300 million

contract to restore electric power in Puerto Rico.

The island's sole power utility agency struck the deal with the tiny company, Whitefish

Energy.

Now the Federal Emergency Management Agency says it has -- quote -- "significant concerns"

about the arrangement.

Whitefish is based in Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke's hometown in Montana, but he said today

that he had nothing to do with the deal.

President Trump will approve plans to shrink the size of two national monuments, federally

protected areas in Utah.

That word today from Orrin Hatch, one of the state's U.S. senators.

He says the president called him today with the news.

The White House wouldn't confirm or deny it.

The monuments are Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante.

The latest trove of documents on President John F. Kennedy's assassination is out.

The National Archives made 2,800 documents public last night, but President Trump held

back others for further review, at the behest of the FBI and CIA.

He tweeted today that he hopes to make nearly all of it public eventually.

On Wall Street today, upbeat earnings and sales reports from Microsoft and Amazon fueled

a rally in technology stocks.

The Nasdaq rose 144 points, more than 2 percent, to top 6700.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 33 points, and the S&P 500 added 20.

Are YouTube's Adpocalypse woes finally coming to an end?

For months now the YouTube community has been freaking out about YouTube's ad policies with demonetization hitting creators left and right,

killing off any chances of making money on a video right out of the gate.

But now YouTube is saying that that's all a thing of the past, thanks to a new algorithm update that supposedly is going to make things

better with fewer false positives and millions more videos making it through the money gates.

Did YouTube make good on its promises?

Well, that much remains to be seen. This new algorithm update was announced on the YouTube help forum over the weekend, with a spokesperson

writing that "the manual review process has helped the company learn a lot about what should and shouldn't be flagged for demonetization".

For those unaware this has been an issue plaguing creators for the better part of the year.

The post said, "Since August over a million human reviews have helped train and improve this technology and today, we're releasing an important update that will result in fewer

misclassifications overall. As a result, there will be a

30% reduction in the number of videos receiving limited ads as they move to being fully monetized.

In other words, millions more videos to become fully monetized".

So, doesn't that make you feel better about all that money you lost in your videos?

It was all in the service of learning!

Cool...

The post goes on to say, "For your channel, you may see icons that were previously yellow turn to green.

You may also see icons of a previously green turn to yellow --

this updated system is an improvement, but it's not perfect.

We know there's much more work to do, so if you feel the yellow icon is a mistake, please continue to appeal".

YouTube wrapped things up by saying this update was only possible because of the feedback people gave through the appeals process.

And of course the creator community is incredibly important to them,

and they're grateful for your patience as they've worked to make their systems better,

bring advertisers back to the platform and to push updates that'll help protect your revenue.

If you've missed out on all the to do about YouTube's demonetization problems,

the whole snafu started around April, when just about all of YouTube's major

advertisers pulled support for the platform following ad placement next to...

Let's just say it's controversial subject matter.

YouTube's ad business lost hundreds of millions in the fallout after that, and the company had to pivot

very quickly to become a more family-friendly platform.

The quick and dirty way to do that was through a pretty aggressive algorithm that demonetized any video that could possibly be construed as "controversial".

It's a fun word.

This was referred to as the "Adpocalypse",

and it hit loads of creators in a way that left many with the choice of becoming less reliant on YouTube.

As a result of all that, a spotlight got placed on gaming videos in particular

because some of them violate YouTube's ad-friendly guidelines due to depictions of fake violence.

We've seen some instances where any videos related to a particular game like, Call of Duty

or Destiny, are automatically demonetized.

And sometimes it's a little bit less straightforward than that.

Over the last few months, creators have been reporting the most random demonetized videos you can think of, because their channels at some point

have been delisted as being advertiser friendly.

The rough part of it for these creators is that their videos are basically demonetized until YouTube can manually review them.

But, in that time they miss out on any potential revenue. Considering most of the videos revenue is made in those first few days,

creators completely miss out by the time the manual review process is over and the demonetization is reversed.

All these developments, of course, for some creators to double dip with multiple platforms like Twitch and Patreon, in order to supplement

the money they'd lost from YouTube.

But, then things got even worse for some of them once YouTube start cracking down on things like, outbound links leading off the site.

Recently, it was announced that users had to join YouTube's Partner Program in order to add end cards with external links (you know like links to a Patreon page or a Twitch channel).

On top of that the partner program limits the end cards channels with

10,000 total public views or more that puts a bit of a strain on

small dedicated channels of Patreon followings, limiting their ability to get off the ground.

But, all those woes are in the past, right? Sure...Totally

Because YouTube is totally fix all of it's demonetization problems once and for all and everything's great forever, Amen?

Good news everyone, it's fixed!

We're good.. Yeah?

Well, that much remains to be seen, at the moment.

All it takes is a few searches on Twitter, as well as angry comments in the announcement post itself, to see that things still aren't well in YouTube Land.

I don't want to go to YouTube Land, that sounds like a scary place. Right?

There are dozens of posts with creators still saying the algorithm is messed up,

and that just about every one of their videos is getting

demonetized no matter the subject of the video itself.

To be fair, we're still in the early days of this update

so, it'll probably just you know take a little bit of time to get a sense of how it's doing in the wild and whether

or not they're machine learning has learned...

At all. Sure.

We did some checking around on our side of things, and while some in the RoosterTeeth family say that things seem to have

improved from where they were earlier this year,

others aren't so sure, and some of the people who we spoke with expect things to get worse as we hit Q4.

Gotta love things gettin' worse.

Yep.

Part of that has to do with some political fears being stirred up by controversies regarding

propaganda and ad buying on social media sites.

We're not gonna get into the politics of that,

but there are worries from advertisers and platforms alike about getting caught up in government oversight and regulations.

And it's making advertisers a little bit nervous about blanket ad bets.

The long story short is that despite all this people are still rethinking the way they use YouTube.

Larger creators will of course be fine, as always, but the middle tier and smaller creators will probably be hit the hardest.

For YouTube's part, it looks like they've...

...~tried~...

to make good on some of their promises to fix things for creators. In addition to this algorithm update they also announced some Twitch-like

features last month to help mitigate the impact for some, so... Sure, if you can't fix it copy it.

So, as always time will tell if YouTube's on its way back up for creators,

or if we'll keep seeing the same issues that we've seen throughout 2017.

What do you guys think of YouTube's new algorithm update

that's supposed to fix demonetization?

Has your channel been fixed? You still gettin' demonetized?

And sometimes it's a little bit less straightforward than that.

Over the last few months creators have been reporting the most random

...Fears being stirred up by controversies regarding propaganda and ad bullying on social media sites.

Offscreen: Ad buying! Micha: Ad buying.

What's "ad bullying"? I don't know, I just went with it.
