[ This occurred in the midst of the battle to bring light. ]

[ There existed a daughter of the famous warrior, "La Hire." Her name was "Melissa." ]

[ This is the tale of "Dream France..." ]

Melissa: Eeeeeek!

Iroha: S-someone's here?!

Melissa: ... Iroha-san, run!

Iroha: Wawawa?! They're over here?!

???: Uooohh!

Iroha: Hyah!! There are voices this way, too!

Melissa: Kyaaa?!

Iroha: Melissa-san, this way!

Melissa: There's no escape!!

Melissa: Haah, haah...

Melissa: ... Ah!

Melissa: Pardon my rudeness...! I must introduce myself...

Melissa: My name is Melissa de Vignolles.

Melissa: Ordinarily, I serve as an attendant to lady Jeanne; or: Tart.

Melissa: However I'm currently assisting the French military.

Melissa: If you were to ask me how I ended up here...

Melissa: I'm afraid that would be a long story.

Melissa: The day it all began had seemed like any other...

Soldiers: Santé (Cheers)!

La Hire: Melissa! Bring me wine!

Melissa: Yes, father!

Soldier: Melissa-chan! Pour a glass for me, too!

Melissa: Yes, here you go!

Melissa: Was the food flavored to your liking?!

Soldier: Yes, that particular smell of cinnamon made it so appetizing!

La Hire: It was a recipe that you made up, wasn't it, Melissa?

Melissa: Yes! I'm just happy if everyone liked it!

Melissa: If you have any requests for next time, please don't hesitate to tell me...!

Soldier: Hmm, a request huh...? It's gotta be a meat dish - something to keep up the strength.

Melissa: Yes, of course... The battle carries on, after all...

La Hire: She can't just pull meat from thin air, you know? What I really want is a change in flavors.

Soldier: Ahh... Yeah, that sounds good!

Melissa: So you're saying... That you'd like to eat something different for a change...?

Yachiyo: ... Melissa is pretty impressive.

Iroha: She really is!

Iroha: She's good at cooking and serving - it's like she can do anything...

Cube: She's been looking after soldiers since she was only a child.

Cube: Her father is a commanding soldier. Since she's always with him, she's accustomed to life on the battlefield.

Cube: Treating injuries and serving others is her specialty!

Iroha: That makes sense. How amazing...

Iroha: She's not that much older than me, but she still works so fast...!

Melissa: ... Ah!

Melissa: Iroha-san, Yachiyo-san!

Melissa: So this is where you were!

Cube: You were looking for them?

Melissa: Yes, Angel-sama!

Melissa: It seems that my work tending to the tables has slowed down...

Yachiyo: Angel-sama, huh...?

Iroha: Oh, that's right. Melissa can see Cube.

Cube: Yes. It's the proof that she has the potential to become a magical girl.

Yachiyo: Then do you want Melissa to become a magical girl?

Cube: Of course, any girl with potential is welcome!

Cube: But I don't intend to pressure her. Tart is against it, too.

Yachiyo: Tart is?

Melissa: ... Yes. Because Tart is so kind.

Melissa: She said that we just became such good friends, so she didn't want to put me in danger...

Melissa: That's why it's a decision that I shouldn't make too hastily.

Yachiyo: ... I think that's for the best.

Melissa: We've gotten a bit off topic...

Yachiyo: Right. Was there something that you needed from us?

Melissa: Yes, that's right.

Melissa: Actually, I had a favor to ask of you...

Iroha: A favor...?

Yachiyo: What is it?

Melissa: Yes, my favor...

Melissa: I'd like the two of you to escort me!

Iroha: Escort you...?

Yachiyo: So that means you're planning on going somewhere?

Melissa: Yes!

Melissa: The truth is, I'm in charge of procuring more supplies and food for us.

Iroha: Huh?

Iroha: That's up to you...?!

Melissa: Ah, well, myself and some adults!

Melissa: At any rate...

Melissa: Tomorrow, those of us in charge of resupplying will be traveling to the encampment.

Melissa: But on the way we'll be passing through an area that may have some strong monsters...

Yachiyo: And so you'll need our power as magical girls, is that right?

Yachiyo: We don't mind at all. ... Right, Iroha?

Iroha: Yes, of course!

Melissa: Wow! Thank you so much!

Yachiyo: You'd better report to your father.

Melissa: Yes! I'll tell him right away!

Melissa: But I'm sure it will be fine!

Melissa: He already said that it would be fine, as long as the two of you were alright with it!

Iroha: Ah...

Iroha: So you already talked to the rest of the squadron about it!

Yachiyo: ... Makes sense.

Yachiyo: You sure are a on top of it.

Melissa: It's not that impressive...!

Melissa: It's just that I can't fight the way the two of you can...

Melissa: I want to be useful however I can to make up for it!

Melissa: ... If I were to make a wish to Angel-sama...

Melissa: Then I would be able to fight the way you two do...

Iroha: That's not necessary!

Iroha: We'll escort you, any time!

Melissa: Iroha-san...!

Melissa: Thank you very much!

Melissa: Well then, if you'll pardon me...!

Iroha: Of course!

Yachiyo: See you.

In the morning, we set out for the encampment.

With Iroha-san and Yachiyo-san escorting us, we were able to progress smoothly.

Eventually, we decided to take a short rest.

Melissa: ... Let's stop here!

Melissa: I have some fresh baked bread for you - I made it this morning!

Melissa: Would you like some?

Iroha: Wow...!

Yachiyo: Thank you, Melissa. I'd love some.

Melissa: Do you have bread like this where you're from?

Iroha: We do!

Iroha: It's not the kind I'd usually eat, but they sell this type, too!

Yachiyo: Where we're from, food comes in from all over the world.

Yachiyo: We have all sorts of cakes and desserts that we learned from France.

Melissa: Wow... That's amazing!

Iroha: Like parfaits... Or mont blanc!

Melissa: Mont blanc... That means "white mountain," right?

Iroha: Ah... I guess it doesn't exist yet in this time period.

Iroha: So, a mont blanc is...

Iroha: Like a cake with a mountain of cream. And it's white from the powdered sugar on top.

Melissa: Wow!

Yachiyo: The cream is made with a lot of chestnuts.

Melissa: I see...!

Melissa: Please tell me the other ingredients, just as many as you can remember!

Iroha: Wait...

Iroha: Are you going to try making it?

Melissa: Yes!

Melissa: I'd like to increase my cooking repertoire in any way I can!

Yachiyo: ... You're so hardworking.

Melissa: I want to make something tasty for everyone who has to fight on the front lines!

Melissa: They say that eating the same things all the time is taxing on morale.

Yachiyo: Supporting your troops is a difficult job in itself.

Melissa: I'm Tart's attendant, so serving Tart will always come first.

Melissa: But if supporting the French military will be of use to Tart, then...

Melissa: In a way, that makes it my number one priority!

Melissa: ... I see.

Melissa: In that case, could you prepare 5 casks of wine?

Soldier: Yeah, we can definitely provide that!

Melissa: Really? Thank you so much!

Soldier: Is that everything?

Melissa: Yes! Thanks to your help, we have all of the provisions we need!

Melissa: Truly, thank you very much!

Soldier: Of course. Come back any time you need something!

Melissa: ... Iroha-san, Yachiyo-san.

Melissa: This completes all our work, here!

Iroha: Huh - already...?

Iroha: That seemed too fast.

Yachiyo: Melissa handled all the negotiations well, after all.

Melissa: We were able to get here quickly thanks to the two of you escorting us!

Melissa: I'm very grateful!

Iroha: No, it was nothing!

Yachiyo: I'm glad that you're satisfied, but...

Yachiyo: Now we have all this time to spare.

Iroha: Yeah, I almost feel like we finished too early.

Melissa: Tart's troops will be on the move right now, so we can't return right away.

Melissa: We'll be standing by at this encampment for 2 days.

Iroha: 2 days...

Iroha: Kind of a long wait...

Yachiyo: ... Yeah.

Yachiyo: ... Say, Iroha?

Yachiyo: If there are any villages or towns nearby...

Yachiyo: Would you like to take a break and visit, with Melissa?

Iroha: Eh... Do you think it's okay?

Yachiyo: Iroha, you and Melissa are almost the same age.

Iroha: Besides, you'd still be escorting her, right?

Iroha: But... What about you, Yachiyo-san?

Yachiyo: I'll stay back and hold down the fort. It's better if at least one of us stays.

Yachiyo: What do you think, Melissa?

Yachiyo: Is there anywhere you'd like to check out?

Melissa: ...........

Melissa: Yes...! Actually...

Melissa: I wanted to see it for some time - apparently they have a church!

Melissa: I'm afraid my preamble has gone on too long, but...

Melissa: What matters is that my words started that fight...

Melissa: Being of use to Tart is my happiness!

*clang* ... *clang* ...

Melissa: ------?!

Melissa: That sounds like metal!

Iroha: ... But why?!

Iroha: N-no one else was here, right?!

Melissa: Perhaps it's...

Both: A real ghost?!

Melissa: That's right... And that's when it all began!

Melissa: That dreadful night that Iroha-san and I faced together...!

Iroha: I-it's probably just the bell ringing because of the time... Right?

Girl: N-no...

Girl: Not at this hour...

*stomp, stomp* ...

Melissa: Eh...!

Melissa: Did you hear that, Iroha-san?!

Iroha: Y-yes...!

Iroha: It sounded like clanging footsteps...!

Melissa: But there's no one over there...!

*stomp stomp stomp stomp* ...

Iroha: From that way, too?!

???: Uooohh!

Melissa: Eeeeeek!

Iroha: S-someone's here?!

Melissa: ... Iroha-san, run!

Iroha: Wawawa?! They're over here?!

???: Uooohh!

Iroha: Hyah!! There are voices this way, too!

Melissa: Kyaaa?!

Iroha: Melissa-san, this way!

Melissa: There's no escape!!

Iroha: Melissa-san!

Girl: ...........

Melissa: (... If nothing else, I must protect this child!)

???: Uooohh!

Melissa: I know that this turned into a rather long story...

Melissa: But that's... How Iroha-san and I...

Melissa: Were caught up in the chaos!

Melissa: There's no escape!!

Iroha: Melissa-san!

Girl: ...........

Melissa: (... If nothing else, I must protect this child!)

???: Uooohh!

Melissa: ------?!

Melissa: (Tart... Father...! I'm so sorry...!)

Melissa: (To think that... In a holy church...)

Melissa: (At the hands of a priest's ghost... I would die...)

Melissa: (Wait...)

"I've heard creepy laughter when no one else was there, and the bell started to ring by itself..."

"Rumor has it, it's the spirit of the old priest."

Melissa: (That's strange... Why would the priest attack us?)

Melissa: ...........

Melissa: (Then, could it be that... This isn't a ghost...?)

Girl: Miss!

???: Uooohh!!!

Melissa: Just stop, please!

???: U... Uoh...?

Melissa: Playing pranks in such a holy church...

Melissa: ... Who do you think you are?!

???: ......... .........

Iroha: The voice and the noises... Stopped?

Iroha: Ah... Wait, so, Melissa-san...

Iroha: Did you just say "pranks"?

Melissa: Yes!

Melissa: This isn't the work of a ghost, it's just a person!

Girl: ...........

Girl: So you figured it out, huh?

Girl: Sorry, ladies!

Girl: Everyone... You can stop hiding and come out, now!

Iroha: Huh...?

Iroha: Everyone...?

Man: Sorry about that, girls...

Melissa: As I thought...

Melissa: Then you lied about the rumor of the ghost?

Melissa: "The ghost of the priest" ...

Melissa: Why did you tell us such a tale?

Man: Well, you see...

Man: Our village is being occupied by England's military.

Man: Then we heard a rumor that there was a "young maiden" leading the french military.

Man: And that she was headed to our village.

Man: So we set up this plan to "do something to make her leave."

Melissa: ... I see...

Man: Sorry about that, girls...

Girl: We're very sorry!

Man: Deep down, we all want to be able to welcome the French military.

Man: But because of the circumstances, we just can't risk it.

Iroha: Circumstances...?

Man: If we were found out, England's army could take it out on us.

Iroha: Oh... Right... That makes sense.

Iroha: I didn't realize at all, and I brought us here...

Man: Well, we're always just trying to avoid violence.

Man: Now that I look at you, you're both such young girls. Now I feel really guilty...

Girl: We thought if we made up a ghost story, you'd be scared and leave...

Man: I really thought it would work...

Iroha: It was pretty effective...

Iroha: We were completly convinced that there was a ghost...!

Iroha: But how did you figure it out, Melissa-san?

Iroha: How did you know it was a set up?

Girl: Yeah, I was so surprised!

Melissa: I just thought that it was strange.

Melissa: I just couldn't bring myself to believe that a holy priest would threaten anyone who came on pilgrimage...

Iroha: Yeah... Now that you mention it...

Man: I see...

Man: I'd expect no less from a companion to that "young maiden" who hears the voice of angels!

Melissa: O-oh my...!

Girl: Wait, lady...

Girl: Are you actually secretly that "maiden"?!

Melissa: ... Eh?

Melissa: N-no, I'm not!

Melissa: I'm simply a servant of Tart - no, of the "young maiden"...!

Man: I've heard that the "young maiden" is quite modest.

Man: Maybe you're just pretending to be a servant?!

Girl: "Young maiden" Jeanne-sama! Stay for the night!

Melissa: As I said, you're mistaken!

Iroha: They don't seem to be listening to you...

Melissa: ... And this was the tale surrounding the priest's ghost.

Melissa: Iroha-san and I got pulled into such trouble...

Melissa: But we were able to make it out safe and sound...!

Melissa: Phew...!

Melissa: We're finally out!

Iroha: That was a bit of an ordeal, wasn't it?

Iroha: It was nice to be welcomed so enthusiastically, but it means they had a hard time saying good bye.

Melissa: And all this because I selfishly wanted to visit the church!

Melissa: I'm sorry to have troubled you...!

Iroha: N-no, you didn't!

Iroha: Don't apologize! Everything turned out okay!

Melissa: Yes... I'm so relieved...

Melissa: I'm glad that I didn't bring any shame to that "young maiden" as her servant.

Iroha: Not everyone came around to the truth, though...

Iroha: Some of them still think you're the "young maiden" in question...!

Melissa: That part is a bit troubling...

Melissa: But I was able to visit the church and offer my prayers, like I wanted.

Melissa: And we were able to get some good souvenirs as well...

Melissa: I'm glad we went!

Iroha: Speaking of which, Melissa-san.

Iroha: When you were getting those souvenirs, you got really caught up in conversation, huh?

Melissa: Ah... Because we get to visit churches so rarely, they had some things I really wanted to pick up.

Melissa: I was finally able to get my hands on them!

Iroha: On what?

Melissa: Hehe. You'll see!

Melissa: Come now, let's hurry back!

Melissa: We don't want to make Yachiyo-san and the others worry!

Iroha: Right!

Iroha: We're back, Yachiyo-san!

Melissa: We were able to make it back safely, thanks to Iroha-san...!

Yachiyo: Well done.

Yachiyo: It was supposed to be a bit of a breather for you, but it sounds like it was its own hassle.

Iroha: Yes...

Iroha: But we got to talk a lot, so it was still fun!

Melissa: I had fun too, Iroha-san!

Melissa: If you'll pardon me, I need to prepare tonight's dinner...

Iroha: Huh? But it's still so early.

Melissa: Yes!

Melissa: I think it's going to take quite some time...

Iroha: Huh...?

Yachiyo: Just what is she making...?

Soldier 1: Wow, this is delicious! So this dessert is called a Mont Blanc?

Soldier 2: I don't usually like sweets, but I could eat this for the rest of my life!

Melissa: I'm glad that you like it...!

Melissa: Yachiyo-san, Iroha-san, please help yourselves!

Iroha: Wow, thank you so much!

Iroha: Woah, amazing...

Iroha: It's like a picture perfect Mont Blanc!

Yachiyo: Then shall we try it?

Yachiyo: ------?!

Iroha: It's...!

Iroha: It's exactly like the Mont Blancs we know!

Melissa: I'm so glad!

Yachiyo: Was this made with honey?

Melissa: Yes!

Melissa: I had to figure out some ingredient substitutions!

Melissa: And I didn't originally have chestnuts...

Melissa: But I noticed that there were a lot of chestnut trees around the village.

Melissa: So I convinced them to let me take some back as souvenirs!

Iroha: Oh...

Iroha: So that's what you were talking to the villagers about before we left!

Yachiyo: That's amazing.

Yachiyo: I can't believe you were able to recreate it based on nothing but our description!

Melissa: Hehe... Thank you very much!

Cube: ... Pretty popular, huh?

Iroha: Oh, it's Cube.

Melissa: Angel-sama!

Cube: I overheard the conversation, Melissa.

Cube: It's wonderful that you're raising the morale of the French army!

Melissa: T-thank you so much, Angel-sama!

Cube: It truly is impressive.

Cube: You aren't even a magical girl, but you're contributing substantially to the French army.

Cube: Even when you're face to face with an enemy, you have the courage to stand up and fight.

Cube: And on top of that, you're perfect at your duties serving dinner.

Cube: It's just as I thought - you would make a wonderful magical girl!

Melissa: Angel-sama...

Melissa: D-do you really think so...?

Iroha: (Umm...)

Iroha: (What does serving dinner have to do with it...?!)

Melissa: I'll do my best to be even more helpful!

Melissa: Yes...! Actually...

Melissa: I wanted to see it for some time - apparently they have a church!

Melissa: I'm afraid my preamble has gone on too long, but...

Melissa: What matters is that my words started that fight...

Iroha: ... A church?

Melissa: Yes!

Melissa: There's a church nearby that's a famous pilgrimage destination.

Melissa: I've never had the chance to visit for myself...

Yachiyo: You're a very devout believer.

Yachiyo: You pray each morning and night, without fail...

Iroha: It sounds great, Melissa-san!

Iroha: Let's visit that church together!

Melissa: Thank you very much, Iroha-san...!

The next day... We set out for the church.

But we had no idea what awaited us there...

Iroha: So, Melissa-san...

Iroha: Do you always travel to churches on foot like this?

Melissa: Yes. As often as I can, I try to.

Iroha: You're so enthusiastic.

Melissa: Yes...

Melissa: I grew up attending church, so it can be very soothing.

Iroha: Ah... Really?

Melissa: Yes.

Melissa: I lost my mother when I was very young, so I was raised by the church.

Melissa: I grew up not knowing my father.

Melissa: Back then, neither of us knew each other.

Iroha: Eh...

Iroha: But somehow, you were able to find each other?

Melissa: My mother often spoke of my father by his real name.

Melissa: And... When the blood rushes to my face until my ears turn red...

Melissa: Apparently I resemble my father quite closely...

Iroha: Your father's name, "La Hire," refers to the wrath of God, right?

Iroha: I've heard that he's scary when he's mad - like you'd expect with a name like that...

Iroha: ... Could that be...

Iroha: Is that something that you inherited from your father...?

Melissa: W-well, that's...!

Melissa: No... But... There may be times when, perhaps we resemble each other...

Melissa: Somewhat... I suppose...?

Iroha: T-then...

Iroha: I'll be careful not to make you angry from now on...!

Melissa: P-please don't be frightened!

Melissa: It's okay! Everything is okay!

Iroha: I-I know...!

Iroha: I'll be careful not to be afraid!

Melissa: (So she says, but...)

Melissa: (She's very clearly frightened, now...)

Melissa: We're finally close to the village, but...

Iroha: It took a lot longer than we expected, huh?

Melissa: I'm sorry...

Melissa: I hadn't expected the bridge to have been collapsed...

Melissa: That detour cost us quite a bit of time.

Iroha: Oh well. Let's hurry on to the village!

Melissa: Of course!

Man: ...........

Melissa: ... Here we are! This is the village with the church!

Iroha: We finally made it!

Melissa: But the sun has already gone down...

Melissa: I'm sorry, Iroha-san.

Iroha: No, no, it's okay!

Iroha: So...

Iroha: Is that big building up there the famous church?

Melissa: That's right!

Melissa: But for now, let's focus on finding lodging for the night.

Melissa: We can leave visiting the church for tomorrow morning...

Man: ... But the morning won't come!

Iroha: Ah...

Melissa: Are you from this village?

Man: Yeah, that's right.

Melissa: What do you mean the morning won't come...?

The church village had been invaded by England's military.

In the places they destroy, the night never ends.

And...

Melissa: What...?

Iroha: There are... Ghosts in the church?!

Man: That's right.

Man: And thanks to all those rumors, everyone has been avoiding the church.

"I've heard creepy laughter when no one else was there, and the bell started to ring by itself..."

"Rumor has it, it's the spirit of the old priest."

Melissa: The spirit of the dead priest...

Iroha: K-Kinda scary, huh?

Melissa: Yes...

Melissa: But... It's only a rumor, isn't it?

Man: Y-yeah... Yeah, sure.

Melissa: We didn't come all this way on our holy pilgrimage just to turn around.

Melissa: I'm sure that this is merely a test of faith...!

Melissa: Iroha-san! We mustn't be afraid. Let's visit the church!

Iroha: Oh, right now?

Iroha: Well... I guess if the night won't end, we can't exactly wait until tomorrow...

Girl: ... Miss, are you going to the church?

Melissa: ... Ah.

Melissa: Do you live around here?

Girl: Yeah!

Girl: If you're going to the church, I can show you the way!

Man: H... Hey, come on...

Melissa: Iroha-san, what do you think?

Iroha: If you're going, I'm going!

Melissa: Well then... Please, lead the way.

Girl: Yeah, sure thing!

Man: This is your last chance to turn back...

Girl: ... The entrance to the church is up ahead!

Iroha: It's... Way creepier than I expected...

Iroha: It might be that we just heard that ghost story a minute ago, though...

Melissa: I-I'm sure that was it... It was just the story...!

Girl: Are you afraid of ghosts?

Melissa: Well... I can't say that I'm not afraid...

Melissa: And I can't fight monsters the way Iroha-san can...

Iroha: I'm not really great with ghosts either, though...

Melissa: Oh - really?!

Iroha: Sorry.

Iroha: It's just - witches and familiars are one thing, but I've never seen a ghost before...

Melissa: I-I suppose that makes sense.

Melissa: Ah... Speaking of which...

Melissa: The priest's spirit is in the church, right? Do you know where?

Girl: I think he's inside the church...

Girl: But I've heard people say they saw him outside, too...!

Iroha: Huh? Then...

Iroha: Does that mean we could run into him out here...?

Girl: Y-yes...

*rustle* ...

*rustle rustle* ...

Melissa: ------?!

Iroha: What's that sound?!

Melissa: Does... The air feel different to you?

Girl: It... Feels weird to me, too...

Iroha: (My soul gem...?!)

Iroha: ... It's reacting to magic!

Iroha: What now? There's something here!

Melissa: I-is it the ghost we heard about?!

БЯЯяяЯяЯЯ!!!!!

Melissa: Wha - wha?!

Iroha: I-it's here!

Iroha: A gh-gh... Huh?

БЯЯяяЯяЯЯ!!!!!

Iroha: Wait, now that I'm looking at it... Isn't that...

Melissa: Yes, it's... From England's militia...

Iroha: It's a familiar!!

Iroha: I'll take care of it!

Iroha: Take the girl and get her somewhere safe!

Melissa: Understood!

Melissa: Iroha-san, please be safe!

Iroha: Yah!

БЯЯяЯЯ...

Iroha: Haah, haah...

Iroha: Is it... Over?

Iroha: Melissa-san! It's safe to come out, now!

Melissa: Iroha-san... Thank you so much!

Girl: Thank you, miss!

Melissa: Now I understand...!

Melissa: What they thought was a ghost was really one of the enemy's monsters!

Iroha: It definitely looks that way.

Iroha: They did say that England's army just attacked the village...

Melissa: I'm just glad that you were here with me, Iroha-san...!

Melissa: Well... Now that we've settled the matter of the ghost...

Melissa: Let's get refreshed and head into the church!

Girl: Huh...?

Iroha: What's wrong?

Girl: Um... Nothing.

Melissa: Then, shall we go?

Iroha: Yeah!

Melissa: ...........

Melissa: Thank you for waiting...

Melissa: It's because of you that I was able to give my prayers in peace!

Iroha: So you raise a candle first, and then pray.

Melissa: Well, that's how I do it...

Melissa: But different people have different ways of praying!

Iroha: Wow... I had no idea.

Girl: ...........

Melissa: ... Is something the matter? You seem nervous.

Girl: Ah, no... It's nothing...

*clang* ... *clang* ...

Melissa: ------?!

Melissa: That sounds like metal!

Iroha: ... But why?!

Iroha: N-no one else was here, right?!

Melissa: Perhaps it's...

Both: A real ghost?!

Melissa: That's right... And that's when it all began!

Melissa: That dreadful night that Iroha-san and I faced together...!

Melissa: We all need to make it back... Alive and well!
