A few weeks ago we told you the El Paso Police Department
has added more officers to its force.
Well, now you too can learn more about the department
and law enforcement in general
by joining the Citizens Academy.
Police and the Texas Department of Public Safety
are accepting applications for the next academy
that starts February 26th.
The 13 week program gives students
a behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement.
It covers items like SWATS, patrolling,
the crime lab, canine units and much more.
The academy is designed to bridge the gap
between residents and officers.
Visit EPPD.org to register for the free program.
If you happen to get a driving ticket
or need court information, you can now chat online
with someone from Municipal Court.
Click Let's Chat, answer a couple of quick questions,
and then get connected with someone from the court.
The free service is available from
eight a.m. to five p.m., Monday through Friday,
and can be accessed through a mobile phone.
Visit elpasotexas.gov and click on
the Municipal Courts tab on that site.
There's another program run by Municipal Court
that educates teenagers on law
and actually allows them to participate
in real life court proceedings.
Your City in Five meet a specialist, Jonathan Romo,
takes us to teen court.

- Teen court is a program provided for by
the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure where
a young person who gets a Class C citation
can opt to do teen court
instead of just paying the citation.
What they would do then, is come here,
like today on a Saturday,
and their case is gonna get heard
in a real court proceeding that is run by teenagers.
- This basically allows us to actually
get in a court room and deliver opening arguments,
fuel the actual pressure of having someones,
I guess, sentencing on your hands.
And it makes it real for us.
- [Judge Morales] The jury that decides
their community service hours is all teenagers.
The lawyers that help to present their case
and to defend them are all teenagers.
We meet once a month.
We have our teen court hearings
on Saturdays from eight to 12.
It is open to everyone, it is absolutely free.
- This is a great opportunity that
the City of El Paso gives teenagers.
Not only because they give us the opportunity
to work with real cases, but because they
open up their court rooms and everything
so we can participate.
- I feel like everyone, depending on
no matter what their background is,
they have this opportunity to
get involved in the legal field.

Elsewhere, the Superbowl and other big gatherings
tend to create lots of trash.
You can now reduce the amount of garbage
that goes into the city's landfill by recycling.
Here's some tips from the recycling program.
Only recycle aluminum, paper, plastic, and cardboard.
Have separate containers for recycling and trash.
Do not put recycle items in bags.
Here's why -- plastic bags prevent staff
from quickly sorting those bags.
Plus plastic bags get tangled in machines
forcing a halt in the recycling process.
It's best to keep those recyclable items
loose in your blue bin
and never ever recycle pizza boxes.

Animal Services is hosting a shelter bowl
on Superbowl weekend that includes free pet adoptions.
It's on Saturday, February second from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
All adoptions include spay, neuter procedures,
microchip, age appropriate vaccinations and a city license.
If you can't adopt a pet, but wanna help Animal Services,
you can donate items or become a temporary foster.
Well, as Valentine's day approaches,
many gift seekers will visit pop up shops
to get those last minute gifts.
The Code Compliance Division wants
to remind those vendors to make sure you have a permit.
Here's what you need if you plan to sell.
A vendor's license and a temporary placement permit,
permission from the property owner
where the items will be sold,
and permission from the nearest business
to use their restroom.
It's against city ordinance and a safety hazard
to sell anything on sidewalks, parkways,
street medians, and public right of ways.
- If vendors do not have the permits in place,
then they could be potentially cited.
Though we do try and educate as much as we possibly can.

The history of Alameda Avenue is now on display
at bus shelters along the Alameda brio.
The 14 mile rapid transit system
that will connect the Mission Valley
to Central and Downtown El Paso,
features art created by 13 local artists.
The Alameda brio route is a vibrant green
and the art on the stops light up at night
making them even more vibrant.
The city's Public Art Program,
the Capital Improvement Department and Sun Metro
collaborated on this part of the project.
Services on the Alameda brio will begin later this year.
You can enjoy more art by checking out
a couple of new exhibits at the El Paso Museum of Art.
Both exhibits focus on the Spanish Colonial Americas.
They include paintings, sculptures
and informational lectures.
The exhibits officially open on February ninth.
