Manchester United boss Mourinho is keen to keep both De Gea and Martial at the club, with the duo widely regarded as two of their most important players

The 55-year-old spoke out on Martial during a press conference yesterday, saying: "I know the club wants him very much to stay, so hopefully he is going to stay

"One thing is that he's a talented player that everybody knows he is - since he was in Monaco, everybody knows he was a talented player

"So, when you reach that level or when you are almost reaching that level, it's when you become a player - what I say, a top player

' "On the other hand, you've got the likes of Chris Smalling who is out of contract

Phil Jones as well. "Then you've got someone like Luke Shaw who does renew having played effectively 25 per cent of games over the four years of his initial contract at Manchester United, who gets a 50 per cent upgrade on his contract because he's played five good games this season

"Other players are looking at that and thinking 'what about me? I've been here longer, I've done more, I've won trophies

Why am I not being offered an upgrade on my contract?' "I think it has a very unsettling effect, and it's something Mourinho has no control over

"And indeed it might be the case that Manchester United need to cut through the wheat from chaff and get rid of players on high earning contracts

"But you can't realistically look to recruit eight/ni
