Welcome to Work in Progress #4
Today I'll talk about NFC Implants, Smartwatches
Finding ideas and submissions. Have fun!
So let's start with the NFC implant.
I got one in my left hand.
If i move my thumb, you can
see about where it is. If I relax my hand
it is barely visible.
This was right after the procedure.
You only get a plaster over it.
Because the implantation is only done with a needle.
So it is only a super small wound.
The next day it looked like this.
You can see that the implant
rotated a bit :/
It moved diagonally over my tendon.
So if i stretch my thumb upwards
I lift up the whole implant with tendon.
That was very unpleasant.
So I
moved the implant by carefully
massaging it to another spot.
Now it is in a better spot.
Still not optimal:
actually they should be closer to the
index finger bone and not so close to the thumb bone.
But it's no problem as long as it does not annoy me.
It's barely visible, so it's fine to me.
I'll leave it there :)
Often people ask about security
if I tell them about my implant.
I'd say they are the same as with every smartcard/NFC tag.
About being tracked:
the implants have a very small reading distance.
So attackers need to come very close.
What would be worse if
someone wants to write malicious information on the tag.
That's why you should
protect the writing with a password/pin.
So only you can write on it.
So now I can my smartphone against my hand and read it.
In this case I saved my VCard.
That's record 0 and therefor the first record
that gets detected by a smartphone.
Besides I checked out
the development for my fitbit.
I always wanted to write a watchface for it.
But lost track of it
and now I just played around a bit.
The API is really nice. You only need a bit of javascript
and HTML/SVG files
to describe the GUI.
You can deploy directly from the browser.
The workflow
is really nice!
But it's a bit said that the drawing possibilities are rather limited.
For example you can't draw polygons.
So the watchface I wanted to build was not possible.
So I need to come up
with something new.
But I can recommend it.
If you have a Versa or Ionic, give it a try!
Last but not least some small stuff:
The flower generator here
you now from previous episodes
I was searching a name for it.
I used the plattform "all our ideas" for this.
it's pretty awesome!
You can predefine voting options
or users can suggest new ones.
and then vote between two:
what they like better.
and these are the results for the flower generator.
I chose from the top voting results.
"Flowergen" was too
boring in a way.
"Florator" is an already existing term.
"Floreley" is hard to pronounce.
"overflower" has the IT pun
so I chose this one.
So that's the new name.
And because that voting worked so well, I started a new one.
It was about finding attributes
that fit both to bugs (insects)
as well as to bugs in code.
SO I searched ambiguous words.
I wanted to make a fun t-shirt from it.
and I couldn't come up with enough ideas myself.
And there were really nice submissions.
Some were entered multiple times.
And some were downvoted
I wouldn't have thought they would.
Does "huge" really not fit both?
Maybe.
I thought some would rank higher.
What went to the top is
"hidden"
"hard to find", "hiding", etc
or
"hard to get rid of"
or some other that are similar to "hiding"
So the meta theme is
Bugs are
hiding, they are hard to get rid of
they are small and come up in large numbers.
So I made a first draft for a shirt:
*zoom zoom*
It has the points but
it doesn't really *kick*
atm I'm having a hard time shading with colors
especially against a dark background.
Because normally you would print on a dark shirt.
I'll iterate over it some times.
So that was one afternoon.
A propos t-shirts:
the mastodon sticker motives are now in the shirt-shop.
because some guys said they wanted to print it.
that's the fastest way. But remember: these are CC-0
So you can print them on whatever you like.
Then I submitted some stuff.
Can't show much here
There's ProcJam. An event
*knot in tongue* brgbrg
An event about procedural generation.
And you can (or could ?)
Yeah, you still can...
submit pitches for tutorials.
I submitted one.
So you pitch what tutorial you would like to write
and if you get accepted you write it
and you get paid for it.
Really awesome!
And together with my partner
we submitted a project idea
to Prototype Fund.
That's an organization
that supports
open source projects.
They pay really well and for half a year.
And if we get accepted, we could
realize our project and would get paid for it!
That would be awesome!
And that's it :)
Thanks to semester start and preparing exams, not too much happened.
And because I don't have a question for this ending
I'll show you some baby hedgehogs I found in my garden.
Have fun and see you in two weeks!
