Martial scored what proved to be the decisive goal as Mourinho's side ran out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford

Paul Pogba had put United in front after converting his own saved penalty from the rebound after 27 minutes

Martial doubled the lead just after half-time, while Gylfi Sigurdsson reduced the deficit to one goal with a 77th-minute penalty

And Mourinho singled out the young Frenchman, 22, for praise and says he is now beginning to realise his potential after working on the mental side of his game

"He has the same natural talents he had one or two years ago," Mourinho said. "But he is improving the way he thinks of football and improving his role in the team

I am happy with boys who are improving." Victory for United was anything but comfortable, with the visitors racking up 14 shots in an exciting clash

Mourinho admitted it was a difficult game, but insisted he was satisfied with Martial's display

"It is difficult periods for them and for me because I want more from them but I am really happy with Anthony

"Everton is not on paper a top-four side, but they are a team capable of coming here to fight for a result the way they did

Every match is difficult. "In terms of my approach to my young players, that's the way I am

"In the end, you have the rewards of that hard work if they don't give up and they don't have an entourage who supports their weaknesses

"Luke Shaw was strong and these people were good to him and now Anthony is becoming a better player

" United moved above Everton in to eighth in the Premier League table. But they remain five points off the Champions League places

Man Utd news: Sky Sports pundits in SHOCK as Graeme Souness actually PRAISES Paul Pogba - Duration: 2:43.

However, Liverpool legend Souness gave credit where credit is due for Pogba's first-half performance against Everton today

Manchester United welcomed the Toffees to Old Trafford and led 1-0 at half time through Pogba

The Frenchman saw a penalty saved by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford following his trademark slow run up, however he put in the rebound to save his blushes

At half time, Jamie Redknapp claimed United star Anthony Martial was the standout performer in the first half

"He's been the best player on the pitch, Martial. Brilliant," Redknapp said. "Carried on from where he was last week

" But Souness disagreed, responding: "I'd say Pogba's been really good." Redknapp, ex-England right-back Alex Scott and Sky Sports presenter David Jones were clearly surprised with Souness' comment

"What? What? Are you sure?," Redknapp was heard saying. Souness was not impressed with Pogba's stuttering run up for the penalty but was pleased with every other aspect of his game

He continued: "Apart from this. I don't like to see this. "I personally think this is 'look at me, look at me, I want to be in the spotlight'

I just don't get this penalty. "But I think he's moved the ball quickly today, he's been uncomplicated, like the pass for Martial to get the penalty

I think he's been really good today.   "If he could do that week in week out, you'd be talking about him as a proper player

" Scott was still surprised at Souness when continuing her half-time analysis. "Why are you chuckling?" Souness asked her

Scott responded: "Because of you complimenting Pogba there." And Jones ended the half time segment by saying: "I never thought I'd hear the day, Graeme Souness praising Paul Pogba
