Hi, I'm Erin Gallup Von Tersch with Caltrans News Flash. Today hundreds of
students are walking to school to Nicholas Elementary just like many others
across the state.
Walk Sacramento is out here today to promote our safe routes to school
program. Safe routes to school is a program that encourages students to walk
and bike to school safely and have fun while doing it. So walk to school day is
our big encouragement event of the year where we reward students for walking and
biking to school. Safe routes to school grants that are funded through the
active transportation program are supported by Caltrans and fun programs
like this as well as safe streets, sidewalks, crosswalks - things that make it
easier for kids to walk and bike safely to school. What's your favorite thing
about walking? You, like, see everything and you can, like, be free and it's, like,
more fun walking because, like, in the car you just sit there and you're driving to
school but when you're walking you could, like, just be all over the place but
still be, like, safe. Because we get to walk. That's the fun thing to walk to
school day because I get to walk and have fun with my friends and family. Do you
like to walk school? What do you like about it? Because I get to get exercise.
It's more better walking instead of being in the cars and polluting the
environment. The ATP got a big boost of funding through Senate Bill 1 so we're
doing even more now to support safe routes to school and the active
transportation program and we're celebrating walking all month during
October for Walktober.
Do you guys like walking to school?
Yes!
Why?
Because it's fun!
