Huma Abedin returns to Twitter to honor John McCain - Daily News - Duration: 2:30.

Huma Abedin has returned to Twitter for the first time in two years to pay tribute to Senator John McCain who once defended her when some members of Congress accused her of being part of the Muslim Brotherhood

The former Hillary Clinton aide honored the late Senator in a tweet on Sunday after attending his funeral in Washington DC

'Senator McCain once said, 'Our reputations, our character, are the only things we leave behind when we depart this earth',' Abedin tweeted

'Being in the cathedral celebrating him showed that words can only strive to capture the greatness of his character

What a legacy to leave on this earth.' The last time Abedin tweeted was back in July 2016

McCain took to the Senate floor back in 2012 to slam accusations that Abedin had ties to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood

At the time, unsubstantiated allegations had surfaced that Abedin was using her role as Clinton's top aide to infiltrate the US government

McCain publicly slammed the claims as an 'unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American and a loyal public servant'

He went on to describe her as an 'intelligent, upstanding, hard-working and loyal servant' of the county and government who had 'devoted countless days of her life to advancing the ideals of the nation she loves and looking after its most precious interests'

'That she has done so while maintaining her characteristic decency, warmth and good humor is a testament to her ability to bear even the most arduous duties with poise and confidence,' McCain said in his floor speech

'Put simply, Huma represents what is best about America: the daughter of immigrants, who has risen to the highest levels of our government on the basis of her substantial personal merit and her abiding commitment to the American ideals that she embodies so fully

'Abedin, who divorced her husband Anthony Weiner last year, was among the mourners at McCain's nationally televised memorial service at Washington's National Cathedral on Saturday

McCain, who died August 25 aged 81 after a year-long struggle against brain cancer, was laid to rest in a private ceremony on Sunday at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland
