Snake!
Nick: Don't f*king attack me...
Nick: I'm not f*king European, I'm American :D
I'm having my dinner,
I have my show downloaded on phone,
...so it's not so bad as you would think.
For me, civil engineer...
...it't the first thing I notice when I look at the map.
Wherever I am in California.
Engineers plan roads in straight lines, because they simply can, I suppose.
The plain terrain allows them to do that.
Also the fact, that US is a young country, matters here.
In Europe, our cities started to grow at least several hundreds years ago,
...when nobody was planning
A city started with a market and a church,
...and later it grew in more or less unpredictable way.
Here in US, everything is relatively new, and towns are built according to an urban plan.
Look at those maps.
It's Ontario, part of Los Angeles agglomeration.
And this is Big Bear.
Only when the terrain becomes too steep, they make curvy roads.
...but sometimes even when it's steep, they design a straight line...
...all in all, in the US everyone moves around with a car,
...there is no other option.
From Hiker Town on, the PCT runs on those straight, long dirt roads, for a couple of miles.
March is tedious.
After walking for several dozen of minutes,
...I have an impression that I already passed at least half of the straight line.
But when I look at the map, it becomes clear that it has been only a quarter so far.
This is "the pan", a flat part of the desert I mentioned before.
During daylight, temperatures easily rise up to 35℃ (95℉) and more here.
And it's only May now.
That day, I went for 42 km (26 mi),
But it was worth it, I skipped highest temperatures by doing that.
It's a true masterpiece of civil engineering.
Los Angeles started with it's own river,
...which wasn't enough in the early 20th century.
Ambitious rulers of LA wanted to create a real metropolis here.
...so they ordered civil engineers to resolve the water problem.
They found water in Sierra Nevada mountains, approximately 200 mi east from the city.
In 1908 they started a project named "Los Angeles Aqueduct"
6 reservoirs and about 346 km (216 mi) of aqueduct were planned to be built.
Among that, 244 km (152 mi) of concrete, underground water tunnel.
All powered by gravity.
In the background of this investment, of course - big money, snatches, bribing
Just like in Hollywood.
As a result of draining water, they totally destroyed ecosystem of the Owens valley.
...where before that, agriculture was growing strong.
In 20's, desperate farmers even blew up the aqueduct.
Those events were called "The Water War"
There was also an inner circle,
...people who knew, that San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles) is going to be watered,
...including the main designer of the project,
...those people bought lots of useless land there,
When this land had water later, its value increased several times,
...making its owners incredibly rich.
Los Angeles was growing and so the need for water.
In the 40's they extended Aqueduct to 544 km (340 mi)
All the way to Mono Lake.
It turned out that with new water from Mono Lake,
the Aqueduct was not able to take so much water.
It's worth to mention here, that water for LA was supplied by, of course, a private company.
LA wasn't taking so much water, as was provided in the agreement.
...so the city had to build second aqueduct, all the way to the Owens Valley.
...in order to be able to collect more water, added by Mono Lake.
Without this pipe I'm walking on now, there wouldn't be LA as you know it.
But everything has it's price.
Until 70's, they destroyed not only the Owens Valley ecosystem, but also Mono Lake.
Tribunals, suing, attempts to recover the ecosystems.
Since 2005,
... about 40-50% of the original, historic aqueduct flow is dedicated...
...to restore the destroyed ecosystems.
I'm tired to talk English all the time,
I miss words all the time,
and I noticed that because of that, I became lazy with recording.
...so I will speak polish now again.
I'm at a wind power plant.
And so we are, hiding from the Sun, behind some building.
Together with by buddy Yannick
We found some shade here.
It's after 11am
I did 11 mi already (17 km) so only 10 mi more
...and I will be content.
Fun fact:
look how destroyed is this wall because of shooting
Also the railing here is demolished.
Someone was shooting from there.
The bullet went through here.
And this is how Americans play.
No bullsh*t.
Leaving your comfort zone nr 582...
there, in sun
it's very hot
...and here in the shade, when you sit for 2 hours already,
it's cold
that's why I'm fully dressed
my buddy's wearing a jacket too
it's so cold that I have my leggings and jacket on,
...and I covered my legs with a blouse
and I'm still cold
But I know, when I go there,
...I will pray for some shade.
It's a pan, I doesn't look like there will be shade at all.
That's the other wall ot this building...
...the bullet is still here.
I have just started,
I changed my clothes and so on,
...and what happens?
I have a stone in my shoe.
So you have to stop again,
You have to
....take your gaiter off,
...untie everything...
it's so much work to get a stone out,
Bugger that!
Sometimes you are just too lazy and you go on with the stone inside...
cause you don't want to stop again
Another day of the journey...
America is considered to be a land of a gas and oil,
but look here, wind and solar power plants.
Nice.
Apparently there will be no other option soon...
From 2001 to 2016, they enlarged the amount of wind turbines in California 3 times.
Reaching power capacity of 5600 MW,
It's enough to cover California's needs in 7%.
Still 49% of energy is produced with natural gas here.
Beside wind turbines, they're building first solar power plants as well.
All i all, it's a desert.
Area I'm walking into now is called Tehachapi Pass Wind Farm, the biggest wind farm in California.
I arrived at a place, where is so called "trail magic"
magic on the trail
good people bring water here, but also
other nice things, like...
Also a trail register is here.
Someone did a good job, wow!
It's amazing that somebody leaves some biscuits for you on the trail,
...and you are the happiest guy, all of a sudden
I have also a small orange,
I will donate several dollars of course, there is a donation jar
...so she gave us 300$!
and we are now in Best Western hotel...
